A massive class of $\mathcal{N} = 2$ AdS$_4$ IIA solutions

We initiate a classification of $\mathcal{N} =2$ supersymmetric AdS$_4$ solutions of (massive) type IIA supergravity. The internal space is locally equipped with either an SU(2) or an identity structure. We focus on the SU(2) structure and determine the conditions it satisfies, dictated by supersymmetry. Imposing as an Ansatz that the internal space is complex, we reduce the problem of finding solutions to a Riccati ODE, which we solve analytically. We obtain in this fashion a large number of new families of solutions, both regular as well as with localized O8-planes and conical Calabi--Yau singularities. We also recover many solutions already discussed in the literature.

On supersymmetric AdS$_3$ solutions of Type II

We classify supersymmetric warped AdS$_3 \times_w M_7$ backgrounds of Type IIA and Type IIB supergravity with non-constant dilaton, generic RR fluxes and magnetic NSNS flux, in terms of a dynamic $SU(3)$-structure on $M_7$. We illustrate our results by recovering several solutions with various amounts of supersymmetry. The dynamic $SU(3)$-structure includes a $G_2$-structure as a limiting case, and we show that in Type IIB this is integrable.

On AdS$_3$ solutions of Type IIB

We study $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric AdS$_3 \times M_7$ backgrounds of Type IIB supergravity, with non-vanishing axio-dilaton, three-form and five-form fluxes, and a "strict" $SU(3)$-structure on $M_7$. We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for supersymmetry as a set of constraints on the torsion classes of the $SU(3)$-structure. Given an Ansatz for the three-form fluxes, the problem of also solving the equations of motion involves a "master equation", which generalizes ones that have previously appeared in the literature.

Supersymmetric gauge theory on curved 7-branes

We construct novel $7d$ supersymmetric gauge theories which include a Chern-Simons-like term on curved spaces. In order to so, we examine the supersymmetry constraints for E7-branes in type IIA$^*$ theory, rather than making use of an off-shell supergravity. We find two classes of solutions to the constraints, expressed in terms of a $G_2$-structure with non-vanishing intrinsic torsion. The supersymmetric gauge theories are then obtained by coupling flat gauge theory to such supersymmetric backgrounds. Various examples are given, including round and squashed $S^7$ as well as $S^3 \times M_4$ with $M_4$ hyperkähler.

Mink$_3\times S^3$ solutions of type II supergravity

We initiate the classification of supersymmetric solutions of type II supergravity on $\mathbb{R}^{1,2} \times S^3 \times M_4$. We find explicit local expressions for all backgrounds with either a single Killing spinor or two of equal norm, up to PDE's. We show that the only type II AdS$_4\times S^3$ solution is the known $\mathcal{N}=4$ AdS$_4$ background obtained from the near-horizon limit of intersecting D2-D6 branes. Various known branes and intersecting brane systems are recovered, and we obtain a novel class of $\mathbb{R}^{1,2} \times S^2\times S^3$ solutions in IIA.

Ten-dimensional lifts of global supersymmetry on curved spaces

Admissible curved space backgrounds for four-dimensional supersymmetric field theories are determined by solving Killing spinor equations of four-dimensional off-shell supergravities. These can be obtained by combining ten-dimensional type IIB supersymmetry with D-brane kappa-symmetry and identifying auxiliary fields of the four-dimensional supergravity fields in terms of type IIB fields. In this paper we show how to extend a number of solutions of four-dimensional Killing spinor equations with four or less supercharges to solutions of the ten-dimensional supersymmetry constraints.

Supersymmetric branes and instantons on curved spaces

We discuss non-linear instantons in supersymmetric field theories on curved spaces arising from D-branes. Focusing on D3-branes and four-dimensional field theories, we derive the supersymmetry conditions and show the intimate relation between the instanton solutions and the non-linearly realized supersymmetries of the field theory. We demonstrate that field theories with non-linearly realized supersymmetries are coupled to supergravity backgrounds in a similar fashion as those with linearly realized supersymmetries, and provide details on how to derive such couplings from a type II perspective.

On flux vacua, SU(n)-structures and generalised complex geometry

Understanding supersymmetric flux vacua is essential in order to connect string theory to observable physics. In this thesis, flux vacua are studied by making use of two mathematical frameworks: SU(n)-structures and generalised complex geometry. Manifolds with SU(n)-structure are generalisations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Generalised complex geometry is a geometrical framework that simultaneously generalises complex and symplectic geometry. Classes of flux vacua of type II supergravity and M-theory are given on manifolds with SU(4)-structure. The N= (1,1) type IIA vacua uplift to N=1 M-theory vacua, with four-flux that need not be (2,2) and primitive. Explicit vacua are given on Stenzel space, a non-compact Calabi-Yau. These are then generalised by constructing families of non-CY SU(4)-structures to find vacua on non-symplectic SU(4)-deformed Stenzel spaces. It is shown that the supersymmetry conditions for N = (2,0) type IIB can be rephrased in the language of generalised complex geometry, partially in terms of integrability conditions of generalised almost complex structures. This rephrasing for d=2 goes beyond the calibration equations, in contrast to d=4,6 where the calibration equations are equivalent to supersymmetry. Finally, Euclidean type II theory is examined on SU(5)-structure manifolds, where generalised equations are found which are necessary but not sufficient to satisfy the supersymmetry equations. Explicit classes of solutions are provided here as well. Contact with Lorentzian physics can be made by uplifting such solutions to d=1, N=1 M-theory.

Mirror symmetry & supersymmetry on SU(4)-structure backgrounds

We revisit the backgrounds of type IIB on manifolds with $SU(4)$-structure and discuss two sets of solutions arising from internal geometries that are complex and symplectic respectively. Both can be realized in terms of generalized complex geometry. We identify a map which relates the complex and symplectic supersymmetric systems. In the semi-flat torus bundle setting this map corresponds to T-duality and suggest a way of extending the mirror transform to non-Kähler geometries.

Supersymmetric solutions on SU(4)-structure deformed Stenzel space

The Stenzel space fourfold is a non-compact Calabi-Yau which is a higher dimensional analogue of the deformed conifold. We consider N = (1,1) type IIA, N = 1 M-theory and N = (2,0) type IIB compactifications on this Stenzel space, thus examining the gravity side of potentially higher dimensional analogues of Klebanov-Strassler-like compactifications. We construct families of SU(4)-structures and solve associated moduli spaces, of complex and symplectic structures amongst others. By making use of these, we can construct IIA compactifications on manifolds homeomorphic to the Stenzel space fourfold, but with complex non-CY SU(4)-structures. Such compactifications are sourced by a distribution of NS5-branes. The external metric is asymptotically conformal AdS_3 and should thus be suitable for holography applications.

3d N=1 effective supergravity and F-theory from M-theory on fourfolds

We consider 3d N=1 M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds, and the effective 3d theory of light modes obtained by reduction from eleven dimensions. We study in detail the mass spectrum at the vacuum and, by decoupling the massive multiplets, we derive the effective 3d N=1 theory in the large-volume limit up to quartic fermion terms. We show that in general it is an ungauged N=1 supergravity of the form expected from 3d supersymmetry. In particular the massless bosonic fields consist of the volume modulus and the axions originating from the eleven-dimensional three-form, while the moduli-space metric is locally isometric to hyperbolic space. We consider the F-theory interpretation of the 3d N=1 M-theory vacua in the light of the F-theory effective action approach. We show that these vacua generally have F-theory duals with circle fluxes, thus breaking 4d Poincaré invariance.

Generalized complex geometry of pure backgrounds in ten and eleven dimensions

Pure backgrounds are a natural generalization of supersymmetric Calabi-Yau compactifications in the presence of flux. They are described in the language of generalized SU(d) x SU(d) structures and generalized complex geometry, and they exhibit some interesting general patterns: the internal manifold is generalized Calabi-Yau, while the Ramond-Ramond flux is exact in a precise sense discussed in this paper. We have shown that although these two characteristics do persist in the case of generic ten-dimensional Euclidean type II pure backgrounds, they do not capture the full content of supersymmetry. We also discuss the uplift of real Euclidean type IIA pure backgrounds to supersymmetric backgrounds of Lorentzian eleven-dimensional supergravity.

IIA supergravity and M-theory on manifolds with SU(4) structure

We give the general form of supersymmetric backgrounds with two real supercharges of M-theory and type IIA supergravity (with non-zero Romans mass in general) of the form $\mathbb{R}^{1,d} \times \M_8$, d=1,2, on eight-dimensional manifolds with SU(4) structure. We point out a subtlety in the integrability theorems for low-dimensional supersymmetric compactifications. As a special case we examine Calabi-Yau flux vacua and we show that unbroken supersymmetry does not in general require the four-form flux to be (2,2) or primitive. Our results could be used to construct novel higher-dimensional analogues of the Klebanov-Strassler geometry. In the case of M-theory large-volume Calabi-Yau flux vacua our results are in agreement with partial supersymmetry breaking in three-dimensional N=2 supergravity. Alternatively, the conditions for supersymmetry can be expressed in terms of a real `superpotential' in accordance with three-dimensional N=1 supergravity. We present explicit examples of M-theory flux vacua on K3 \times K3, which however do not appear to possess F-theory duals with four-dimensional Poincaré invariance.

IIB supergravity on manifolds with SU(4) structure and generalized geometry

We consider N=(2,0) backgrounds of IIB supergravity on eight-manifolds M_8 with strict SU(4) structure. We give the explicit solution to the Killing spinor equations as a set of algebraic relations between irreducible su(4) modules of the fluxes and the torsion classes of M_8. One consequence of supersymmetry is that M_8 must be complex. We show that the conjecture of arxiv:1010.5789 concerning the correspondence between background supersymmetry equations in terms of generalized pure spinors and generalized calibrations for admissible static, magnetic D-branes, does not capture the full set of supersymmetry equations. We identify the missing constraints and express them in the form of a single pure-spinor equation which is well defined for generic SU(4)\times SU(4) backgrounds. This additional equation is given in terms of a certain analytic continuation of the generalized calibration form for codimension-2 static, magnetic D-branes.
