Variations on the Nerve Theorem

Given a locally finite cover of a simplicial complex by subcomplexes, Björner's version of the Nerve Theorem provides conditions under which the homotopy groups of the nerve agree with those of the original complex through a range of dimensions. We extend this result to covers of CW complexes by subcomplexes and to open covers of arbitrary topological spaces, without local finiteness restrictions. Moreover, we show that under somewhat weaker hypotheses, the same conclusion holds when one utilizes the multinerve introduced by Colin de Verdière, Ginot, and Goaoc. Our main tool is the Čech complex associated to a cover, as analyzed in work of Dugger and Isaksen. As applications, we prove a generalized crosscut theorem for posets and some variations on Quillen's Poset Fiber Theorem.

The topological Atiyah-Segal map

Associated to each finite dimensional linear representation of a group G, there is a vector bundle over the classifying space BG. This construction was studied extensively for compact groups by Atiyah and Segal. We introduce a homotopy theoretical framework for studying the Atiyah-Segal construction in the context of infinite discrete groups, taking into account the topology of representation spaces. We explain how this framework relates to the Novikov conjecture, and we consider applications to spaces of flat connections on the over the 3-dimensional Heisenberg manifold and families of flat bundles over classifying spaces of groups satisfying Kazhdan's property (T).

Homological stability for spaces of commuting elements in Lie groups

In this paper we study homological stability for spaces ${\rm Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^n,G)$ of pairwise commuting $n$-tuples in a Lie group $G$. We prove that for each $n\geqslant 1$, these spaces satisfy rational homological stability as $G$ ranges through any of the classical sequences of compact, connected Lie groups, or their complexifications. We prove similar results for rational equivariant homology, for character varieties, and for the infinite-dimensional analogues of these spaces, ${\rm Comm}(G)$ and ${\rm B_{com}} G$, introduced by Cohen-Stafa and Adem-Cohen-Torres-Giese respectively. In addition, we show that the rational homology of the space of unordered commuting $n$-tuples in a fixed group $G$ stabilizes as $n$ increases. Our proofs use the theory of representation stability - in particular, the theory of ${\rm FI}_W$-modules developed by Church-Ellenberg-Farb and Wilson. In all of the these results, we obtain specific bounds on the stable range, and we show that the homology isomorphisms are induced by maps of spaces.

Commutative cocycles and stable bundles over surfaces

Commutative K-theory, a cohomology theory built from spaces of commuting matrices, has been explored in recent work of Adem, Gómez, Gritschacher, Lind, and Tillman. In this article, we use unstable methods to construct explicit representatives for the real commutative K-theory classes on surfaces. These classes arise from commutative O(2)-valued cocycles, and are analyzed via the point-wise inversion operation on commutative cocycles.

The homotopy groups of a homotopy group completion

Let $M$ be a topological monoid with homotopy group completion $ΩBM$. Under a strong homotopy commutativity hypothesis on $M$, we show that $π_k (ΩBM)$ is the quotient of the monoid of free homotopy classes $[S^k, M]$ by its submonoid of nullhomotopic maps. We give two applications. First, this result gives a concrete description of the Lawson homology of a complex projective variety in terms of point-wise addition of spherical families of effective algebraic cycles. Second, we apply this result to monoids built from the unitary, or general linear, representation spaces of discrete groups, leading to results about lifting continuous families of characters to continuous families of representations.

Hilbert-Poincare series for spaces of commuting elements in Lie groups

In this article we study the homology of spaces ${\rm Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^n,G)$ of ordered pairwise commuting $n$-tuples in a Lie group $G$. We give an explicit formula for the Poincare series of these spaces in terms of invariants of the Weyl group of $G$. By work of Bergeron and Silberman, our results also apply to ${\rm Hom}(F_n/Γ_n^m,G)$, where the subgroups $Γ_n^m$ are the terms in the descending central series of the free group $F_n$. Finally, we show that there is a stable equivalence between the space ${\rm Comm}(G)$ studied by Cohen-Stafa and its nilpotent analogues.

The Yang-Mills stratification for surfaces revisited

We revisit Atiyah and Bott's study of Morse theory for the Yang-Mills functional over a Riemann surface, and establish new formulas for the minimum codimension of a (non-semi-stable) stratum. These results yield the exact connectivity of the natural map (C_{min} E)//G(E) --> Map^E (M, BU(n)) from the homotopy orbits of the space of central Yang-Mills connections to the classifying space of the gauge group G(E). All of these results carry over to non-orientable surfaces via Ho and Liu's non-orientable Yang-Mills theory. A somewhat less detailed version of this paper (titled "On the Yang-Mills stratification for surfaces") will appear in the Proceedings of the AMS.

The stable moduli space of flat connections over a surface

We compute the homotopy type of the moduli space of flat, unitary connections over aspherical surfaces, after stabilizing with respect to the rank of the underlying bundle. Over the orientable surface M^g, we show that this space has the homotopy type of the infinite symmetric product of M^g, generalizing a well-known fact for the torus. Over a non-orientable surface, we show that this space is homotopy equivalent to a disjoint union of two tori, whose common dimension corresponds to the rank of the first (co)homology group of the surface. Similar calculations are provided for products of surfaces, and show a close analogy with the Quillen-Lichtenbaum conjectures in algebraic K-theory. The proofs utilize Tyler Lawson's work in deformation K-theory, and rely heavily on Yang-Mills theory and gauge theory.

Invariant tubular neighborhoods in infinite-dimensional Riemannian geometry, with applications to Yang-Mills theory

We present a new construction of tubular neighborhoods in (possibly infinite dimensional) Riemannian manifolds M, which allows us to show that if G is an arbitrary group acting isometrically on M, then every G-invariant submanifold with locally trivial normal bundle has a G-invariant total tubular neighborhood. We apply this result to the Morse strata of the Yang-Mills functional over a closed surface. The resulting neighborhoods play an important role in calculations of gauge-equivariant cohomology for moduli spaces of flat connections over non-orientable surfaces.

Periodicity in the stable representation theory of crystallographic groups

Deformation K-theory associates to each discrete group G a spectrum built from spaces of finite dimensional unitary representations of G. In all known examples, this spectrum is 2-periodic above the rational cohomological dimension of G (minus 2), in the sense that T. Lawson's Bott map is an isomorphism on homotopy in these dimensions. We establish a periodicity theorem for crystallographic subgroups of the isometries of k-dimensional Euclidean space. For a certain subclass of torsion-free crystallographic groups, we prove a vanishing result for the homotopy groups of the stable moduli space of representations, and we provide examples relating these homotopy groups to the cohomology of G. These results are established as corollaries of the fact that for each n > 0, the one-point compactification of the moduli space of irreducible n-dimensional representations of G is a CW complex of dimension at most k. This is proven using real algebraic geometry and projective representation theory.

Finite decomposition complexity and the integral Novikov conjecture for higher algebraic K-theory

Decomposition complexity for metric spaces was recently introduced by Guentner, Tessera, and Yu as a natural generalization of asymptotic dimension. We prove a vanishing result for the continuously controlled algebraic K-theory of bounded geometry metric spaces with finite decomposition complexity. This leads to a proof of the integral K-theoretic Novikov conjecture, regarding split injectivity of the K-theoretic assembly map, for groups with finite decomposition complexity and finite CW models for their classifying spaces. By work of Guentner, Tessera, and Yu, this includes all (geometrically finite) linear groups.

The prequantum line bundle on the moduli space of flat $SU(N)$ connections on a Riemann surface and the homotopy of the large $N$ limit

We show that the prequantum line bundle on the moduli space of flat $SU(2)$ connections on a closed Riemann surface of positive genus has degree 1. It then follows from work of Lawton and the second author that the classifying map for this line bundle induces a homotopy equivalence between the stable moduli space of flat $SU(N)$ connections, in the limit as $N$ tends to infinity, and $\mathbb{C}P^\infty$. Applications to the stable moduli space of flat unitary connections are also discussed.

Excision for deformation K-theory of free products

Associated to a discrete group $G$, one has the topological category of finite dimensional (unitary) $G$-representations and (unitary) isomorphisms. Block sums provide this category with a permutative structure, and the associated $K$-theory spectrum is Carlsson's deformation $K$-theory of G. The goal of this paper is to examine the behavior of this functor on free products. Our main theorem shows the square of spectra associated to $G*H$ (considered as an amalgamated product over the trivial group) is homotopy cartesian. The proof uses a general result regarding group completions of homotopy commutative topological monoids, which may be of some independent interest.

Yang-Mills theory over surfaces and the Atiyah-Segal theorem

In this paper we explain how Morse theory for the Yang-Mills functional can be used to prove an analogue, for surface groups, of the Atiyah-Segal theorem. Classically, the Atiyah-Segal theorem relates the representation ring R(Γ) of a compact Lie group $Γ$ to the complex K-theory of the classifying space $BΓ$. For infinite discrete groups, it is necessary to take into account deformations of representations, and with this in mind we replace the representation ring by Carlsson's deformation $K$--theory spectrum $\K (Γ)$ (the homotopy-theoretical analogue of $R(Γ)$). Our main theorem provides an isomorphism in homotopy $\K_*(π_1 Σ)\isom K^{-*}(Σ)$ for all compact, aspherical surfaces $Σ$ and all $*>0$. Combining this result with work of Tyler Lawson, we obtain homotopy theoretical information about the stable moduli space of flat unitary connections over surfaces.

Extending Properties to Relatively Hyperbolic Groups

Consider a finitely generated group $G$ that is relatively hyperbolic with respect to a family of subgroups $H_1, ..., H_n$. We present an axiomatic approach to the problem of extending metric properties from the subgroups $H_i$ to the full group $G$. We use this to show that both (weak) finite decomposition complexity and straight finite decomposition complexity are extendable properties. We also discuss the equivalence of two notions of straight finite decomposition complexity.

Smoothing maps into algebraic sets and spaces of flat connections

Let X be a real algebraic subset of R^n and M a smooth, closed manifold. We show that all continuous maps from M to X are homotopic (in X) to C^\infty maps. We apply this result to study characteristic classes of vector bundles associated to continuous families of complex group representations, and we establish lower bounds on the ranks of the homotopy groups of spaces of flat connections over aspherical manifolds.

Orientability in Yang-Mills Theory over Nonorientable Surfaces

In arXiv:math/0605587, the first two authors have constructed a gauge-equivariant Morse stratification on the space of connections on a principal U(n)-bundle over a connected, closed, nonorientable surface. This space can be identified with the real locus of the space of connections on the pullback of this bundle over the orientable double cover of this nonorientable surface. In this context, the normal bundles to the Morse strata are real vector bundles. We show that these bundles, and their associated homotopy orbit bundles, are orientable for any n when the nonorientable surface is not homeomorphic to the Klein bottle, and for n<4 when the nonorientable surface is the Klein bottle. We also derive similar orientability results when the structure group is SU(n).
