Glassy behavior of two-dimensional stripe-forming systems

We study two dimensional frustrated but non-disordered systems applying a replica approach to a stripe forming model with competing interactions. The phenomenology of the model is representative of several well known systems, like high-Tc superconductors and ultrathin ferromagnetic films, which have been the subject of intense research. We establish the existence of a glass transition to a non-ergodic regime accompanied by an exponential number of long lived metastable states, responsible for slow dynamics and non-equilibrium effects.

Energy Landscape of the Finite-Size Mean-field 3-Spin Spherical Model

We study the 3-spin spherical model with mean-field interactions and Gaussian random couplings. For moderate system sizes of up to 20 spins, we obtain all stationary points of the energy landscape by means of the numerical polynomial homotopy continuation method. On the basis of these stationary points, we analyze the complexity and other quantities related to the glass transition of the model and compare these finite-system quantities to their exact counterparts in the thermodynamic limit.

Coarse grained models of stripe forming systems: phase diagrams, anomalies and scaling hypothesis

Two coarse-grained models which capture some universal characteristics of stripe forming systems are stud- ied. At high temperatures, the structure factors of both models attain their maxima on a circle in reciprocal space, as a consequence of generic isotropic competing interactions. Although this is known to lead to some universal properties, we show that the phase diagrams have important differences, which are a consequence of the particular k dependence of the fluctuation spectrum in each model. The phase diagrams are computed in a mean field approximation and also after inclusion of small fluctuations, which are shown to modify drastically the mean field behavior. Observables like the modulation length and magnetization profiles are computed for the whole temperature range accessible to both models and some important differences in behavior are observed. A stripe compression modulus is computed, showing an anomalous behavior with temperature as recently reported in related models. Also, a recently proposed scaling hypothesis for modulated systems is tested and found to be valid for both models studied.

Microscopic approach to orientational order of domain walls

We develop a fully microscopic, statistical mechanics approach to study phase transitions in Ising systems with competing interactions at different scales. Our aim is to consider orientational and positional order parameters in a unified framework. In this work we consider two dimensional stripe forming systems, where nematic, smectic and crystal phases are possible. We introduce a nematic order parameter in a lattice, which measures orientational order of interfaces. We develop a mean field approach which leads to a free energy which is a function of both the magnetization (density) and the orientational (nematic) order parameters. Self-consistent equations for the order parameters are obtained and the solutions are described for a particular system, the Dipolar Frustrated Ising Ferromagnet. We show that this system has an Ising-nematic phase at low temperatures in the square lattice, where positional order (staggered magnetization) is zero. At lower temperatures a crystal-stripe phase may appear. In the continuum limit the present approach connects to a Ginsburg-Landau theory, which has an isotropic-nematic phase transition with breaking of a continuous symmetry.

Inverse transition in the two dimensional dipolar frustrated ferromagnet

We show that the mean field phase diagram of the dipolar frustrated ferromagnet in an external field presents an inverse transition in the field-temperature plane. The presence of this type of transition has recently been observed experimentally in ultrathin films of Fe/Cu(001). We study a coarse-grained model Hamiltonian in two dimensions. The model supports stripe and bubble equilibrium phases, as well as the paramagnetic phase. At variance with common expectations, already in a single mode approximation, the model shows a sequence of paramagnetic-bubbles-stripes-paramagnetic phase transitions upon lowering the temperature at fixed external field. Going beyond the single mode approximation leads to the shrinking of the bubbles phase, which is restricted to a small region near the zero field critical temperature. Monte Carlo simulations results with a Heisenberg model are consistent with the mean field results.

Symmetry breaking in frustrated systems: effective fluctuation spectrum due to coupling effects

We study the Langevin dynamics of a d-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian with isotropic long range repulsive interactions. We show that, once the symmetry is broken, there is a coupling between the mean value of the local field and its fluctuations, generating an anisotropic effective fluctuation spectrum. This anisotropy has many interesting dynamical consequences. In the infinite time limit, static results are recovered which can be compared with the well known Brazovskii's transition to a state with modulated order. Our study reveals that the modulated solution appears continuously in d = 3 contrary to what is found in the usual approach neglecting coupling of modes, while for d < 3 transitions are still discontinuous. Analytical results for positional and orientational order parameters are also obtained and interpreted in the context of recent discussions.

Dynamics of systems with isotropic competing interactions in an external field: a Langevin approach

We study the Langevin dynamics of a ferromagnetic Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian with a competing long-range repulsive term in the presence of an external magnetic field. The model is analytically solved within the self consistent Hartree approximation for two different initial conditions: disordered or zero field cooled (ZFC), and fully magnetized or field cooled (FC). To test the predictions of the approximation we develop a suitable numerical scheme to ensure the isotropic nature of the interactions. Both the analytical approach and the numerical simulations of two-dimensional finite systems confirm a simple aging scenario at zero temperature and zero field. At zero temperature a critical field $h_c$ is found below which the initial conditions are relevant for the long time dynamics of the system. For $h < h_c$ a logarithmic growth of modulated domains is found in the numerical simulations but this behavior is not captured by the analytical approach which predicts a $t^1/2$ growth law at $T = 0$.

T=0 phase diagram and nature of domains in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular anisotropy

We present the complete zero temperature phase diagram of a model for ultrathin films with perpendicular anisotropy. The whole parameter space of relevant coupling constants is studied in first order anisotropy approximation. Because the ground state is known to be formed by perpendicular stripes separated by Bloch walls, a standard variational approach is used, complemented with specially designed Monte Carlo simulations. We can distinguish four regimes according to the different nature of striped domains: a high anisotropy Ising regime with sharp domain walls, a saturated stripe regime with thicker walls inside which an in-plane component of the magnetization develops, a narrow canted-like regime, characterized by a sinusoidal variation of both the in-plane and the out of plane magnetization components, which upon further decrease of the anisotropy leads to an in-plane ferromagnetic state via a spin reorientation transition (SRT). The nature of domains and walls are described in some detail together with the variation of domain width with anisotropy, for any value of exchange and dipolar interactions. Our results, although strictly valid at $T=0$, can be valuable for interpreting data on the evolution of domain width at finite temperature, a still largely open problem.

Multipolar interactions and complex phases in ferromagnetic ultrathin films

We present a model to describe complex phases observed at mesoscopic scales in ultrathin magnetic films. The model is based on the interaction between dipolar as well as quadrupolar magnetic moments. In the special case of strong perpendicular crystal anisotropy, we show that quadrupolar degrees of freedom associated with orientation of domain walls are essential in order to correctly describe the observed phenomenology of domain formation. A nematic phase characterized by orientational order of domain walls (stripe-like) but without translational order is predicted. This isotropic-nematic transition belongs to the Kosterlitz-Thouless type in the thermodynamic limit. However, we found that in actual experimental scales, the fluctuations of the nematic order parameter are regularized by the sample size, and orientational long range order, as predicted by mean field, should be observable. The transition may be completely characterized experimentally from measurements of the magnetic structure factor as well as from the non-linear in-plane magnetic susceptibility.

Domain walls, canted states and stripe width variation in ultrathin magnetic films with perpendicular anisotropy

Stripe width variation in ultrathin magnetic films is a well known phenomenon still not well understood. We analyze this problem considering a 2D Heisenberg model with ferromagnetic exchange interactions, dipolar interactions and perpendicular anisotropy, relevant e.g. in Fe/Cu(001) films. By extending a classic result of Yafet & Gyorgy (YG) and using Monte Carlo simulations we calculate the complete zero temperature phase diagram of the model. Through this calculation we analyze the correlation between domain walls structure and stripe width variation, as the perpendicular anisotropy changes. In particular, we found evidences that the recently detected canted state becomes the ground state of the system close to the Spin Reorientation Transition (SRT) for any value of the exchange to dipolar couplings ratio. Far away of the SRT the canted ground state is replaced by a saturated stripes state, in which in--plane magnetization components are only present inside the walls. We find that the domain wall structure strongly depends on the perpendicular anisotropy: close to SRT it is well described by YG approximation, but a strong departure is observed in the large anisotropy limit. Moreover, we show that stripe width variation is directly related to domain wall width variation with the anisotropy.

Distributions of switching times of single-domain particles using a time quantified Monte Carlo method

Using a time quantified Monte Carlo scheme we performed simulations of the switching time distribution of single mono-domain particles in the Stoner-Wohlfarth approximation. We considered uniaxial anisotropy and different conditions for the external applied field. The results obtained show the switching time distribution can be well described by two relaxation times, either when the applied field is parallel to the easy axis or for an oblique external field and a larger damping constant. We found that in the low barrier limit these relaxation times are in very good agreement with analytical results obtained from solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation related to this problem. When the damping is small and the applied field is oblique the shape of the distribution curves shows several peaks and resonance effects.

Orientational order in two dimensions from competing interactions at different scales

We discuss orientational order in two dimensions in the context of systems with competing isotropic interactions at different scales. We consider an extension of the Brazovskii model for stripe phases including explicitly quartic terms with nematic symmetry in the energy. We show that leading fluctuations of the mean field nematic solution drive the isotropic-nematic transition into the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class, i.e. these systems have a thermodynamic phase with orientational quasi-long-range order.

The Spin Reorientation Transition and Phase Diagram of Ultrathin Ferromagnetic Films

We show results from Monte Carlo simulations of a two dimensional Heisenberg model for ultrathin films with perpendicular anisotropy. A complete phase diagram is obtained as a function of anisotropy and temperature, spanning a wide range of behavior. We discuss our results in relation with experimental findings in different ultrathin films. We observe and characterize a line of Spin Reorientation Transitions . This transition from out of plane stripe order to in plane ferromagnetic order presents a paramagnetic gap in between in a finite region in parameter space, as reported in experiments. For large anisotropies direct transitions from a low temperature stripe phase to a paramagnetic or tetragonal phase with dominant perpendicular magnetization is observed, also in agreement with experiments. We also show the phase diagram for a system without exchange, i.e. with pure dipolar and anisotropy interactions. It shows a similar behavior to the ferromagnetic case with antiferromagnetic instead of stripe phases at low temperatures. A Spin Reorientation Transition is also found in this case.

Reply to comment on ``Competing Interactions, the Renormalization Group and the Isotropic-Nematic Phase Transition''

The focus of our work is to identify conditions for the presence of an isotropic-nematic phase transition in the context of a generic system with isotropic competing interactions. The comment 0709.4205 criticizes our results by showing that the low temperature fluctuations of a stripe phase in 2d diverge linearly in the thermodynamic limit. The analysis is restricted to the stripe phase and does not apply to the central result of our letter. We show, contrary to what is suggested in the comment, that the model introduced by D. G. Barci and D. A. Stariolo in PRL98, 200604 (2007) undergoes an isotropic-nematic phase transition in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class.

Langevin simulations of a model for ultrathin magnetic films

We show results from simulations of the Langevin dynamics of a two-dimensional scalar model with competing interactions for ultrathin magnetic films. We find a phase transition from a high temperature disordered phase to a low temperature phase with both positional and orientational orders. Both kinds of order emerge at the same temperature, probably due to the isotropy of the model Hamiltonian. In the low temperature phase orientational correlations show long range order while positional correlations show only quasi-long-range order in a wide temperature range. The orientational correlation length and the associated susceptibility seem to diverge with power laws at the transition. While at zero temperature the system exhibits stripe long range order, as temperature grows we observe the proliferation of different kinds of topological defects that ultimately drive the system to the disordered phase. The magnetic structures observed are similar to experimental results on ultrathin ferromagnetic films.

Competing Interactions, the Renormalization Group and the Isotropic-Nematic Phase Transition

We discuss 2D systems with Ising symmetry and competing interactions at different scales. In the framework of the Renormalization Group, we study the effect of relevant quartic interactions. In addition to the usual constant interaction term, we analyze the effect of quadrupole interactions in the self consistent Hartree approximation. We show that in the case of repulsive quadrupole interaction, there is a first order phase transition to a stripe phase in agreement with the well known Brazovskii result. However, in the case of attractive quadrupole interactions there is an isotropic-nematic second order transition with higher critical temperature.

Quasi-stationary trajectories of the HMF model: a topological perspective

We employ a topological approach to investigate the nature of quasi-stationary states of the Mean Field XY Hamiltonian model that arise when the system is initially prepared in a fully magnetized configuration. By means of numerical simulations and analytical considerations, we show that, along the quasi-stationary trajectories, the system evolves in a manifold of critical points of the potential energy function. Although these critical points are maxima, the large number of directions with marginal stability may be responsible for the slow relaxation dynamics and the trapping of the system in such trajectories.

Stripe-tetragonal first order phase transition in ultra-thin magnetic films

We analyze the nature of the phase transition from a smectic stripe phase to a tetragonal phase predicted in analytic studies by Abanov et al. (Phys. Rev. B 51, 1023 (1995)) and observed in experiments on ultra-thin magnetic films by Vaterlaus et al.(Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2247 (2000)). At variance with existent numerical evidence, for the first time we show results of Monte Carlo simulations on a two-dimensional model with competing exchange and dipolar interactions showing strong evidence that the transition is a weak first order one, in agreement with the theoretical predictions of Abanov et al. Besides the numerical evidence, we give further support to the first order nature of the transition analyzing a continuum version of the model and showing that it belongs to a large family of systems, or universality class, in which a first order transition driven by fluctuations is expected on quite general grounds.
