Quantum geometry and critical temperature enhancement in MgB$_2$ superconductivity

MgB$_2$, a phonon-mediated superconductor with record-high critical temperature $T_c\simeq 39$ K, is revisited to obtain a comprehensive theory of electrons, phonons, and their coupling with minimal ab initio input. We construct compact analytic models for the electronic structure, phonons, and electron-phonon coupling (EPC) of MgB$_2$. We show that strong in-plane B $sp^2$ bonding realizes an obstructed band structure whose natural description is a bond-centered kagome lattice, yielding small quasi-2D $\sigma$-band Fermi-surface cylinders and pronounced quantum-geometric effects. The phonon spectrum is found to closely track that of a graphene-like boron layer, but the heavy intercalated Mg atoms dominate the three acoustic branches and rigidly lift the boron modes into the optical sector, while the in-plane B-B bond-stretching mode exhibits a pronounced softening along $\Gamma$-A. By symmetry, this $\Gamma$-point bond-stretching mode is the only $\Gamma$ phonon that can couple to the $\sigma$ Fermi surface, explaining its dominant contribution to the EPC. Upon electron doping toward the doubly degenerate band edge of the $\sigma$ sheets, we find that a reduced density of states competes with enhanced EPC matrix elements. At light electron doping, ab initio calculations show that the EPC enhancement dominates, leading to an increase in $T_c$ (within the clean doping limit without disorder effects). Using the Gaussian approximation for the EPC tensor, we further show that this enhancement is overwhelmingly quantum geometric in origin, arising from a geometric EPC contribution of the small $\sigma$ Fermi surface peaked at $\Gamma$. Overall, our results provide a transparent, symmetry-based account of superconductivity in MgB$_2$ and suggest that quantum-geometric effects can be essential for shaping doping trends in phonon-mediated superconductors.

Correlation Enhanced Electron-Phonon Coupling in FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ at a Magic Angle

While a predictive theory for unconventional superconductivity in Fe-based superconductors remains elusive, an extensively debated aspect is the interaction between phonons and strongly correlated electrons, and its potential role in the pairing mechanism. Here, through the combination of first principles dynamical mean field theory calculations and epitaxial growth of the single-layer FeX (X=Se, S, Te) on SrTiO$_3$ (STO)(001) substrate, which facilitates the controlled distortion of the FeX$_4$ tetrahedron, we demonstrate an unique superconducting dome where the superconducting gap peaks at a `magic' angle of the FeX$_4$ tetrahedron and the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) for the A$_{1g}$ mode is maximized for the FeSe film. Our findings uncover a significant role of electronic correlations in strengthening Cooper pairing in unconventional superconductors by enhancing EPC.

Tuning quantum paramagnetism and d-wave superconductivity in single-layer iron chalcogenides by chemical pressure

By substituting S into single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3, chemical pressure is applied to tune its paramagnetic state that is modeled as an incoherent superposition of spin-spiral states. The resulting electronic bands resemble an ordered checkerboard antiferromagnetic structure, consistent with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals a gap evolving from U-shaped for FeSe to V-shaped for FeS with decreasing size, attributed to a d-wave superconducting state for which nodes emerge once the gap size is smaller than the effective spin-orbit coupling.

Evidence for d-wave superconductivity in single layer FeSe/SrTiO3 probed by quasiparticle scattering off step edges

The de Gennes extrapolation length is a direction dependent measure of the spatial evolution of the pairing gap near the boundary of a superconductor, and thus provides a viable means to probe its symmetry. It is expected to be infinite and isotropic for plain s-wave pairing, and finite and anisotropic for d-wave. Here, we synthesize single layer FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) (STO) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy, and measure the de Gennes extrapolation length by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. We find a 40% reduction of the superconducting gap near specular [110]Fe edges, yielding an extrapolation length of 8.0 nm. However, near specular [010]Fe edges the extrapolation length is nearly infinite. These findings are consistent with a phase changing pairing with 2-fold symmetry, indicating d-wave superconductivity. This is further supported by the presence of in-gap states near the specular [110]Fe edges, but not the [010]Fe edges. This work provides direct experimental evidence for d-wave superconductivity in single layer FeSe/STO, and demonstrates quasiparticle scattering at boundaries to be a viable phase sensitive probe of pairing symmetry in Fe-based superconductors.
