Algebras of symbols associated with the Weyl calculus for Lie group representations

We develop our earlier approach to the Weyl calculus for representations of infinite-dimensional Lie groups by establishing continuity properties of the Moyal product for symbols belonging to various modulation spaces. For instance, we prove that the modulation space of symbols $M^{\infty,1}$ is an associative Banach algebra and the corrresponding operators are bounded. We then apply the abstract results to two classes of representations, namely the unitary irreducible representations of nilpotent Lie groups, and the natural representations of the semidirect product groups that govern the magnetic Weyl calculus. The classical Weyl-Hörmander calculus is obtained for the Schrödinger representations of the finite-dimensional Heisenberg groups, and in this case we recover the results obtained by J.~Sjöstrand in 1994.

Schur--Weyl Theory for $C^*$-algebras

To each irreducible infinite dimensional representation $(π,\cH)$ of a $C^*$-algebra $\cA$, we associate a collection of irreducible norm-continuous unitary representations $π_λ^\cA$ of its unitary group $\U(\cA)$, whose equivalence classes are parameterized by highest weights in the same way as the irreducible bounded unitary representations of the group $\U_\infty(\cH) = \U(\cH) \cap (\1 + K(\cH))$ are. These are precisely the representations arising in the decomposition of the tensor products $\cH^{\otimes n} \otimes (\cH^*)^{\otimes m}$ under $\U(\cA)$. We show that these representations can be realized by sections of holomorphic line bundles over homogeneous Kähler manifolds on which $\U(\cA)$ acts transitively and that the corresponding norm-closed momentum sets $I_{π_λ^\cA}^{\bf n} \subeq \fu(\cA)'$ distinguish inequivalent representations of this type.

On Weyl calculus in infinitely many variables

We outline an abstract approach to the pseudo-differential Weyl calculus for operators in function spaces in infinitely many variables. Our earlier approach to the Weyl calculus for Lie group representations is extended to the case of representations associated with infinite-dimensional coadjoint orbits. We illustrate the approach by the case of infinite-dimensional Heisenberg groups. The classical Weyl-Hörmander calculus is recovered for the Schrödinger representations of the finite-dimensional Heisenberg groups.

Continuity of magnetic Weyl calculus

We investigate continuity properties of the operators obtained by the magnetic Weyl calculus on nilpotent Lie groups, using modulation spaces associated with unitary representations of certain infinite-dimensional Lie groups.

Universal objects in categories of reproducing kernels

We continue our earlier investigation on generalized reproducing kernels, in connection with the complex geometry of $C^*$- algebra representations, by looking at them as the objects of an appropriate category. Thus the correspondence between reproducing $(-*)$-kernels and the associated Hilbert spaces of sections of vector bundles is made into a functor. We construct reproducing $(-*)$-kernels with universality properties with respect to the operation of pull-back. We show how completely positive maps can be regarded as pull-backs of universal ones linked to the tautological bundle over the Grassmann manifold of the Hilbert space $\ell^2({\mathbb N})$.

A survey on Weyl calculus for representations of nilpotent Lie groups

We survey some aspects of the pseudo-differential Weyl calculus for irreducible unitary representations of nilpotent Lie groups, ranging from the classical ideas to recently obtained results. The classical Weyl-Hörmander calculus is recovered for the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg group. Our discussion concerns various extensions of this classical situation to arbitrary nilpotent Lie groups and to some infinite-dimensional Lie groups that allow us to handle the magnetic pseudo-differential calculus.

Modulation spaces of symbols for representations of nilpotent Lie groups

We investigate continuity properties of operators obtained as values of the Weyl correspondence constructed by N.V. Pedersen (Invent. Math. 118 (1994), 1--36) for arbitrary irreducible representations of nilpotent Lie groups. To this end we introduce modulation spaces for such representations and establish some of their basic properties. The situation of square integrable representations is particularly important and in the special case of the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg group we recover the classical modulation spaces used in the time-frequency analysis.

Uncertainty principles for magnetic structures on certain coadjoint orbits

By building on our earlier work, we establish uncertainty principles in terms of Heisenberg inequalities and of the ambiguity functions associated with magnetic structures on certain coadjoint orbits of infinite-dimensional Lie groups. These infinite-dimensional Lie groups are semidirect products of nilpotent Lie groups and invariant function spaces thereon. The recently developed magnetic Weyl calculus is recovered in the special case of function spaces on abelian Lie groups.

Geometric characterization of hermitian algebras with continuous inversion

A hermitian algebra is a unital associative ${\mathbb C}$-algebra endowed with an involution such that the spectra of self-adjoint elements are contained in ${\mathbb R}$. In the case of an algebra ${\mathcal A}$ endowed with a Mackey-complete, locally convex topology such that the set of invertible elements is open and the inversion mapping is continuous, we construct the smooth structures on the appropriate versions of flag manifolds. Then we prove that if such a locally convex algebra ${\mathcal A}$ is endowed with a continuous involution, then it is a hermitian algebra if and only if the natural action of all unitary groups $U_n({\mathcal A})$ on each flag manifold is transitive.

Magnetic pseudo-differential Weyl calculus on nilpotent Lie groups

We develop a pseudo-differential Weyl calculus on nilpotent Lie groups which allows one to deal with magnetic perturbations of right invariant vector fields. For this purpose we investigate an infinite-dimensional Lie group constructed as the semidirect product of a nilpotent Lie grup and an appropriate function space thereon. We single out an appropriate coadjoint orbit in the semidirect product and construct our pseudo-differential calculus as a Weyl quantization of that orbit.

A non-smooth continuous unitary representation of a Banach-Lie group

In this note we show that the representation of the additive group of the Hilbert space $L^2([0,1],\R)$ on $L^2([0,1],\C)$ given by the multiplication operators $π(f) := e^{if}$ is continuous but its space of smooth vectors is trivial. This example shows that a continuous unitary representation of an infinite dimensional Lie group need not be smooth.

Holomorphic geometric models for representations of $C^*$-algebras

Representations of $C^*$-algebras are realized on section spaces of holomorphic homogeneous vector bundles. The corresponding section spaces are investigated by means of a new notion of reproducing kernel, suitable for dealing with involutive diffeomorphisms defined on the base spaces of the bundles. Applications of this technique to dilation theory of completely positive maps are explored and the critical role of complexified homogeneous spaces in connection with the Stinespring dilations is pointed out. The general results are further illustrated by a discussion of several specific topics, including similarity orbits of representations of amenable Banach algebras, similarity orbits of conditional expectations, geometric models of representations of Cuntz algebras, the relationship to endomorphisms of ${\mathcal B}({\mathcal H})$, and non-commutative stochastic analysis.

Finite-dimensional Lie subalgebras of algebras with continuous inversion

We investigate the finite-dimensional Lie groups whose points are separated by the continuous homomorphisms into groups of invertible elements of locally convex algebras with continuous inversion that satisfy an appropriate completeness condition. We find that these are precisely the linear Lie groups, that is, the Lie groups which can be faithfully represented as matrix groups. Our method relies on proving that certain finite-dimensional Lie subalgebras of algebras with continuous inversion commute modulo the Jacobson radical.

Iwasawa decompositions of some infinite-dimensional Lie groups

We set up an abstract framework that allows the investigation of Iwasawa decompositions for involutive infinite-dimensional Lie groups modeled on Banach spaces. As an application, we construct Iwasawa decompositions for classical real or complex Banach-Lie groups associated with the Schatten ideals ${\mathfrak S}_p({\mathcal H})$ on a complex separable Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}$ if $1<p<\infty$.

The restricted Grassmannian, Banach Lie-Poisson spaces, and coadjoint orbits

We investigate some basic questions concerning the relationship between the restricted Grassmannian and the theory of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces. By using universal central extensions of Lie algebras, we find that the restricted Grassmannian is symplectomorphic to symplectic leaves in certain Banach Lie-Poisson spaces, and the underlying Banach space can be chosen to be even a Hilbert space. Smoothness of numerous adjoint and coadjoint orbits of the restricted unitary group is also established. Several pathological properties of the restricted algebra are pointed out.
