Effect of crystalline disorder on magnetic switching in small magnetic cells

I present a study of the influence of disorder in thin magnetic films on the switching behavior of small magnetic cells of well defined shape and size. The disorder considered arises from randomly oriented crystalline grains of different shape, size, and crystalline orientation which gives rise to locally fluctuating intrinsic anisotropy directions and strengths. The study comprises a theoretical investigation of a disordered Stoner Wohlfarth model, as well as micromagnetic simulations. I show that the fluctuations in the total anisotropy and therefore in the switching fields are controlled by a single dimensionless parameter. The theoretical findings are well confirmed by micromagnetic simulations of many different samples

Creation of Entanglement by Interaction with a Common Heat Bath

I show that entanglement between two qubits can be generated if the two qubits interact with a common heat bath in thermal equilibrium, but do not interact directly with each other. In most situations the entanglement is created for a very short time after the interaction with the heat bath is switched on, but depending on system, coupling, and heat bath, the entanglement may persist for arbitrarily long times. This mechanism sheds new light on the creation of entanglement. A particular example of two quantum dots in a closed cavity is discussed, where the heat bath is given by the blackbody radiation.

Unversality of decoherence in the macroworld

We consider environment induced decoherence of quantum superpositions to mixtures in the limit in which that process is much faster than any competing one generated by the Hamiltonian $H_{\rm sys}$ of the isolated system. This interaction dominated decoherence limit has previously not found much attention even though it is of importance for the emergence of classical behavior in the macroworld, since it will always be the relevant regime for large enough separations between superposed wave packets. The usual golden-rule treatment then does not apply but we can employ a short-time expansion for the free motion while keeping the interaction $H_{\rm int}$ in full. We thus reveal decoherence as a universal short-time phenomenon largely independent of the character of the system as well as the bath. Simple analytical expressions for the decoherence time scales are obtained in the limit in which decoherence is even faster than any timescale emerging from the reservoir Hamiltonian $H_{\rm res}$.

Quantum Chaos and Quantum Algorithms

It was recently shown (quant-ph/9909074) that parasitic random interactions between the qubits in a quantum computer can induce quantum chaos and put into question the operability of a quantum computer. In this work I investigate whether already the interactions between the qubits introduced with the intention to operate the quantum computer may lead to quantum chaos. The analysis focuses on two well--known quantum algorithms, namely Grover's search algorithm and the quantum Fourier transform. I show that in both cases the same very unusual combination of signatures from chaotic and from integrable dynamics arises.

Boundary Conditions, the Critical Conductance Distribution, and One-Parameter Scaling

We study the influence of boundary conditions transverse to the transport direction for disordered mesoscopic conductors both at the Anderson metal-insulator transition and in the metallic regime. We show that the boundary conditions strongly influence the conductance distribution exactly at the metal-insulator transition and we discuss implications for the standard picture of one-parameter scaling. We show in particular that the scaling function that describes the change of conductance with system size depends on the boundary conditions from the metallic regime up to the metal-insulator transition. An experiment is proposed that might test the correctness of the one-parameter scaling theory.

Driving Atoms Into Decoherence-Free States

We describe the decoherence-free subspace of N atoms in a cavity, in which decoherence due to the leakage of photons through the cavity mirrors is suppressed. We show how the states of the subspace can be entangled with the help of weak laser pulses, using the high decay rate of the cavity field and strong coupling between the atoms and the resonator mode. The atoms remain decoherence-free with a probability which can, in principle, be arbitrarily close to unity.

Universality of Decoherence

We consider environment induced decoherence of quantum superpositions to mixtures in the limit in which that process is much faster than any competing one generated by the Hamiltonian $H_{\rm sys}$ of the isolated system. While the golden rule then does not apply we can discard $H_{\rm sys}$. By allowing for simultaneous couplings to different reservoirs, we reveal decoherence as a universal short-time phenomenon independent of the character of the system as well as the bath and of the basis the superimposed states are taken from. We discuss consequences for the classical behavior of the macroworld and quantum measurement: For the decoherence of superpositions of macroscopically distinct states the system Hamiltonian is always negligible.

Critical statistics in a power-law random banded matrix ensemble

We investigate the statistical properties of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors in a random matrix ensemble with $H_{ij}\sim |i-j|^{-μ}$. It is known that this model shows a localization-delocalization transition (LDT) as a function of the parameter $μ$. The model is critical at $μ=1$ and the eigenstates are multifractals. Based on numerical simulations we demonstrate that the spectral statistics at criticality differs from semi-Poisson statistics which is expected to be a general feature of systems exhibiting a LDT or `weak chaos'.

Dissipative Chaotic Quantum Maps: Expectation Values, Correlation Functions and the Invariant State

I investigate the propagator of the Wigner function for a dissipative chaotic quantum map. I show that a small amount of dissipation reduces the propagator of sufficiently smooth Wigner functions to its classical counterpart, the Frobenius-Perron operator, if $\hbar\to 0$. Several consequences arise: The Wigner transform of the invariant density matrix is a smeared out version of the classical strange attractor; time dependent expectation values and correlation functions of observables can be evaluated via hybrid quantum-classical formulae in which the quantum character enters only via the initial Wigner function. If a classical phase-space distribution is chosen for the latter or if the map is iterated sufficiently many times the formulae become entirely classical, and powerful classical trace formulae apply.

Spectral properties of Dissipative Chaotic Quantum Maps

I examine spectral properties of a dissipative chaotic quantum map with the help of a recently discovered semiclassical trace formula. I show that in the presence of a small amount of dissipation the traces of any finite power of the propagator of the reduced density matrix, and traces of its classical counterpart, the Frobenius-Perron operator, are identical in the limit of $\hbar\to 0$. Numerically I find that even for finite $\hbar$ the agreement can be very good. This holds in particular if the classical phase space contains a strange attractor, as long as one stays clear of bifurcations. Traces of the quantum propagator for iterations of the map agree well with the corresponding traces of the Frobenius-Perron operator if the classical dynamics is dominated by a strong point attractor.

Slow Decoherence of Superpositions of Macroscopically Distinct States

Linear superpositions of macroscopically distinct quantum states (sometimes also called Schrödinger cat states) are usually almost immediately reduced to a statistical mixture if exposed to the dephasing influence of a dissipative environment. Couplings to the environment with a certain symmetry can lead to slow decoherence, however. We give specific examples of slowly decohering Schrödinger cat states in a realistic quantum optical system and discuss how they might be constructed experimentally.

Long-lived Quantum Coherence between Macroscopically Distinct States in Superradiance

The dephasing influence of a dissipative environment reduces linear superpositions of macroscopically distinct quantum states (sometimes also called Schrödinger cat states) usually almost immediately to a statistical mixture. This process is called decoherence. Couplings to the environment with a certain symmetry can lead to slow decoherence. In this Letter we show that the collective coupling of a large number of two-level atoms to an electromagnetic field mode in a cavity that leads to the phenomena of superradiance has such a symmetry, at least approximately. We construct superpositions of macroscopically distinct quantum states decohering only on a classical time scale and propose an experiment in which the extraordinarily slow decoherence should be observable.

Semiclassics for a Dissipative Quantum Map

We present a semiclassical analysis for a dissipative quantum map with an area-nonpreserving classical limit. We show that in the limit of Planck's constant to 0 the trace of an arbitrary natural power of the propagator is dominated by contributions from periodic orbits of the corresponding classical dissipative motion. We derive trace formulae of the Gutzwiller type for such quantum maps. In comparison to Tabor's formula for area-preserving maps, both classical action and stability prefactor are modified by the dissipation. We evaluate the traces explicitly in the case of a dissipative kicked top with integrable classical motion and find good agreement with numerical results.

WKB for a damped spin

The master equation for a damped spin well known from the theory of superradiance, is written as a finite-difference equation and solved by a WKB-like method. The propagator thus obtained looks like the van Vleck propagator of a certain classical Hamiltonian system with one degree of freedom. A new interpretation is provided of the temporal broadening of initially sharp probability distributions as the analogue of the spreading of the quantum mechanical wave packet.

Semiclassical spin damping: Superradiance revisited

A well known description of superradiance from pointlike collections of many atoms involves the dissipative motion of a large spin. The pertinent ``superradiance master equation'' allows for a formally exact solution which we subject to a semiclassical evaluation. The clue is a saddle-point approximation for an inverse Laplace transform. All previous approximate treatments, disparate as they may appear, are encompassed in our systematic formulation. A byproduct is a hitherto unknown rigorous relation between coherences and probabilities. Our results allow for generalizations to spin dynamics with chaos in the classical limit.

Log-normal Distribution of Level Curvatures in the Localized Regime: Analytical Verification

We study numerically and analytically the moments of the dimensionless level curvature for one-dimensional disordered rings of the circumference L pierced by a magnetic flux. The negative moments of the curvature distribution can be evaluated analytically in the extreme localization limit. The ensuing small curvature asymptotic of the corresponding distribution has a "log-normal" behavior. Numerically studied positive moments show differences from other log-normally distributed quantities.

Magnetization of Disordered Ballistic Quantum Billards

We study the magnetic response of mesoscopic quantum dots in the ballistic regime where the mean free path $l_e$ is larger that the size $L$ of the sample, yet smaller than $L (k_F L)^{d-1}$. In this regime, disorder plays an important role. Employing a semiclassical picture we calculate the contribution of long trajectories which are strongly affected by static disorder and which differ sharply from those of clean systems. In the case of a magnetic field, they give rise to a large linear paramagnetic susceptibility (which is disorder independent), whose magnitude is in agreement with recent experimental results. In the case of a Aharonov-Bohm flux, the susceptibility is disorder dependent and is proportional to the mean free path as in the diffusive regime. We also discuss the corresponding non--linear susceptibilities.

Universal Spectral Correlations in Diffusive Quantum Systems

We have studied numerically several statistical properties of the spectra of disordered electronic systems under the influence of an Aharonov Bohm flux $φ$, which acts as a time--reversal symmetry breaking parameter. The distribution of curvatures of the single electron energy levels has a modified Lorentz form with different exponents in the GOE and GUE regime. It has Gaussian tails in the crossover regime. The typical curvature is found to vary as $ -E_c\ln (E_cφ^2/Δ)$ ($E_c$ is the Thouless energy and $Δ$ the mean level spacing) and to diverge at zero flux. We show that the harmonics of the variation with $φ$ of single level quantities (current or curvature) are correlated, in contradiction with the perturbative result. The single level current correlation function is found to have a logarithmic behavior at low flux, in contrast to the pure symmetry cases. The distribution of single level currents is non--Gaussian in the GOE--GUE transition regime. We find a universal relation between $g_d$, the typical slope of the levels, and $g_c$, the width of the curvature distribution, as was proposed by Akkermans and Montambaux. We conjecture the validity of our results for any chaotic quantum system.
