Centralizers of Lie Algebras Associated to the Descending Central Series of Certain Poly-Free Groups

Poly-free groups are constructed as iterated semidirect products of free groups. The class of poly-free groups includes the classical pure braid groups, fundamental groups of fiber-type hyperplane arrangements, and certain subgroups of the automorphism groups of free groups. The purpose of this article is to compute centralizers of certain natural Lie subalgebras of the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series of poly-free groups G including some of the geometrically interesting classes of groups mentioned above. The main results here extend results of Cohen and Prassidis for such groups. These results imply that a homomorphism out of G is faithful, essentially, if it is faithful when restricted to the level of Lie algebras obtained from the descending central series for the product F x Z, where F is the "top" free group in the semidirect products of free groups and Z is the center of G. The arguments use a mixture of homological, and Lie algebraic methods applied to certain choices of extensions. The limitations of these methods are illustrated using the "poison groups" of Formanek and Procesi, poly-free groups whose Lie algebras do not have certain properties considered here.

Stratified Morse Theory in Arrangements

This paper is a survey of our work based on the stratified Morse theory of Goresky and MacPherson. First we discuss the Morse theory of Euclidean space stratified by an arrangement. This is used to show that the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement admits a minimal cell decomposition. Next we review the construction of a cochain complex whose cohomology computes the local system cohomology of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement. Then we present results on the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of arrangements of a fixed combinatorial type in rank one local system cohomology.

Boundary manifolds of projective hypersurfaces

We study the topology of the boundary manifold of a regular neighborhood of a complex projective hypersurface. We show that, under certain Hodge theoretic conditions, the cohomology ring of the complement of the hypersurface functorially determines that of the boundary. When the hypersurface defines a hyperplane arrangement, the cohomology of the boundary is completely determined by the combinatorics of the underlying arrangement and the ambient dimension. We also study the LS category and topological complexity of the boundary manifold, as well as the resonance varieties of its cohomology ring.

Gauss-Manin connections for arrangements, IV Nonresonant eigenvalues

An arrangement is a finite set of hyperplanes in a finite dimensional complex affine space. A complex rank one local system on the arrangement complement is determined by a set of complex weights for the hyperplanes. We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of arrangements of fixed combinatorial type in the cohomology of the complement with coefficients in the local system determined by the weights. For nonresonant weights, we solve the eigenvalue problem for the endomorphisms arising in the 1-form associated to the Gauss-Manin connection.

Gauss-Manin connections for arrangements, III Formal connections

We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of an arrangement of complex hyperplanes in the cohomology of a complex rank one local system. We define formal Gauss-Manin connection matrices in the Aomoto complex and prove that, for all arrangements and all local systems, these formal connection matrices specialize to Gauss-Manin connection matrices.

Torsion in Milnor fiber homology

In a recent paper, Dimca and Nemethi pose the problem of finding a homogeneous polynomial f such that the homology of the complement of the hypersurface defined by f is torsion-free, but the homology of the Milnor fiber of f has torsion. We prove that this is indeed possible, and show by construction that, for each prime p, there is a polynomial with p-torsion in the homology of the Milnor fiber. The techniques make use of properties of characteristic varieties of hyperplane arrangements.

Resonant local systems on complements of discriminantal arrangements and sl_2 representations

We calculate the skew-symmetric cohomology of the complement of a discriminantal hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in local systems arising in the context of the representation theory of the Lie algebra sl_2. For a discriminantal arrangement in C^k, the skew-symmetric cohomology is nontrivial in dimension k-1 precisely when the "master function" which defines the local system on the complement has nonisolated critical points. In symmetric coordinates, the critical set is a union of lines. Generically, the dimension of this nontrivial skew-symmetric cohomology group is equal to the number of critical lines.

Gauss-Manin connections for arrangements, II Nonresonant weights

We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of an arrangement of complex hyperplanes in the cohomology of a nonresonant complex rank one local system. Aomoto and Kita determined this Gauss-Manin connection for arrangements in general position. We use their results and an algorithm constructed in this paper to determine this Gauss-Manin connection for all arrangements.

Gauss-Manin Connections for Arrangements

We construct a formal connection on the Aomoto complex of an arrangement of hyperplanes, and use it to study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of the arrangement in the cohomology of a complex rank one local system. We prove that the eigenvalues of the Gauss-Manin connection are integral linear combinations of the weights which define the local system.

On representations and K-theory of the braid groups

Let G be the fundamental group of the complement of a K(G,1) hyperplane arrangement (such as Artin's pure braid group) or more generally a homologically toroidal group (as defined in the paper). The subgroup of elements in the complex K-theory of BG which arises from complex unitary representations of G is shown to be trivial. In the case of real K-theory, this subgroup is an elementary abelian 2-group, which is characterized completely in terms of the first two Stiefel-Whitney classes of the representation. Furthermore, an orthogonal representation of G gives rise to a trivial bundle if and only if the representation factors through the spinor groups. In addition, quadratic relations in the cohomology algebra of the pure braid groups which correspond precisely to the Jacobi identity for certain choices of Poisson algebras are shown to give the existence of certain homomorphisms from the pure braid group to generalized Heisenberg groups. These cohomology relations correspond to non-trivial Spin representations of the pure braid groups which give rise to trivial bundles.

Triples of arrangements and local systems

For a triple of complex hyperplane arrangements, there is a well-known long exact sequence relating the cohomology of the complements. We observe that this result extends to certain local coefficient systems, and use this extension to study the characteristic varieties of arrangements. We show that the first characteristic variety may contain components that are translated by characters of any order, thereby answering a question of A. Suciu.

Lie algebras associated to fiber-type arrangements

Given a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space of dimension n, there is a natural associated arrangement of codimension k subspaces in a complex vector space of dimension k*n. Topological invariants of the complement of this subspace arrangement are related to those of the complement of the original hyperplane arrangement. In particular, if the hyperplane arrangement is fiber-type, then, apart from grading, the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series for the fundamental group of the complement of the hyperplane arrangement is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of primitive elements in the homology of the loop space for the complement of the associated subspace arrangement. Furthermore, this last Lie algebra is given by the homotopy groups modulo torsion of the loop space of the complement of the subspace arrangement. Looping further yields an associated Poisson algebra, and generalizations of the "universal infinitesimal Poisson braid relations."

Some cyclic covers of complements of arrangements

Motivated by the Milnor fiber of a central arrangement, we study the cohomology of a family of cyclic covers of the complement of an arbitrary arrangement. We give an explicit proof of the polynomial periodicity of the Betti numbers of the members of this family of cyclic covers.

Monodromy of fiber-type arrangements and orbit configuration spaces

We prove similar theorems concerning the structure of bundles involving complements of fiber-type hyperplane arrangements and orbit configuration spaces. These results facilitate analysis of the fundamental groups of these spaces, which may be viewed as generalizations of the Artin pure braid group. In particular, we resolve two disparate conjectures. We show that the Whitehead group of the fundamental group of the complement of a fiber-type arrangement is trivial, as conjectured by Aravinda, Farrell, and Rouchon. For the orbit configuration space corresponding to the natural action of a finite cyclic group on the punctured plane, we determine the structure of the Lie algebra associated to the lower central series of the fundamental group. Our results show that this Lie algebra is isomorphic to the module of primitives in the homology of the loop space of a related orbit configuration space, as conjectured by Xicotencatl.

Arrangements and local systems

We use stratified Morse theory to construct a complex to compute the cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex rank one local system. The linearization of this complex is shown to be the Orlik-Solomon algebra with the connection operator. Using this result, we establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement and the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra for any arrangement, and show that the latter are unions of subspace arrangements in general, resolving a conjecture of Falk. We also obtain lower bounds for the local system Betti numbers in terms of those of the Orlik-Solomon algebra, recovering a result of Libgober and Yuzvinsky. For certain local systems, our results provide new combinatorial upper bounds on the local system Betti numbers. These upper bounds enable us to prove that in non-resonant systems the cohomology is concentrated in the top dimension, without using resolution of singularities.

On the cohomology of discriminantal arrangements and Orlik-Solomon algebras

We relate the cohomology of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a discriminantal arrangement to the local system cohomology of the complement. The Orlik-Solomon algebra of such an arrangement (viewed as a complex) is shown to be a linear approximation of a complex arising from the fundamental group of the complement, the cohomology of which is isomorphic to that of the complement with coefficients in an arbitrary complex rank one local system. We also establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement of a discriminantal arrangement and the resonant varieties of its Orlik-Solomon algebra.

Characteristic varieties of arrangements

The k-th Fitting ideal of the Alexander invariant B of an arrangement A of n complex hyperplanes defines a characteristic subvariety, V_k(A), of the complex algebraic n-torus. In the combinatorially determined case where B decomposes as a direct sum of local Alexander invariants, we obtain a complete description of V_k(A). For any arrangement A, we show that the tangent cone at the identity of this variety coincides with R^1_k(A), one of the cohomology support loci of the Orlik-Solomon algebra. Using work of Arapura and Libgober, we conclude that all positive-dimensional components of V_k(A) are combinatorially determined, and that R^1_k(A) is the union of a subspace arrangement in C^n, thereby resolving a conjecture of Falk. We use these results to study the reflection arrangements associated to monomial groups.

Alexander Invariants of Complex Hyperplane Arrangements

Let A be an arrangement of complex hyperplanes. The fundamental group of the complement of A is determined by a braid monodromy homomorphism from a finitely generated free group to the pure braid group. Using the Gassner representation of the pure braid group, we find an explicit presentation for the Alexander invariant of A. From this presentation, we obtain combinatorial lower bounds for the ranks of the Chen groups of A. We also provide a combinatorial criterion for when these lower bounds are attained.
