Charged cosmological black holes: a thorough study of a family of solutions

We study a class of charged cosmological black holes defined by the Shah-Vaidya solution, which is similar to the McVittie solution but for a central object of nonzero electric charge. We show that the Shah-Vaidya metric is a solution of Einstein's equations with a cuscuton and a Maxwell fields as sources, as well as a mass parameter. We then analyze the possible causal structures of the solution under some few physically reasonable assumptions, and determine the regions in the parameter space corresponding to well behaved charged cosmological black holes and those corresponding to naked singularities. The asymptotic behavior of the Hubble factor $H(t)$ is also determinant to the causal properties of the spacetime and a theorem explaining its effect is stated. Examples of causal diagrams covering all the possibles types of spacetimes allowed by our initial assumptions are drawn and discussed.

Hamiltonian analysis of the cuscuton

The cuscuton was introduced in the context of cosmology as a field with infinite speed of propagation. It has been claimed to resemble Hořava gravity in a certain limit, and it is a good candidate for an ether theory in which a time-dependent cosmological constant appears naturally. The analysis of its properties is usually performed in the Lagrangian framework, which makes issues like the counting of its dynamical degrees of freedom less clear-cut. Here we perform a Hamiltonian analysis of the theory. We show that the homogeneous limit with local degrees of freedom has singular behavior in the Hamiltonian framework. In other frames, it has an extra scalar degree of freedom. The homogeneous field has regular behavior only if defined a priori as a spatially constant field in a CMC foliation and contributing with a single global degree of freedom. Lastly, we find conditions on the cuscuton potential for the resulting lapse function to be non-zero throughout evolution.

Self-gravitating fluid solutions of Shape Dynamics

Shape Dynamics is a 3D conformally invariant theory of gravity which possesses a large set of solutions in common with General Relativity. When looked closely, these solutions are found to behave in surprising ways, so in order to probe the fitness of Shape Dynamics as a viable alternative to General Relativity one must find and understand increasingly more complex, less symmetrical exact solutions, on which to base perturbative studies and numerical analyses in order to compare them with data. Spherically symmetric exact solutions have been studied, but only in a static vacuum setup. In this work we construct a class of time-dependent exact solutions of Shape Dynamics from first principles, representing a central inhomogeneity in an evolving cosmological environment. By assuming only a perfect fluid source in a spherically symmetric geometry we show that this fully dynamic non-vacuum solution satisfies in all generality the Hamiltonian structure of Shape Dynamics. The simplest choice of solutions is shown to be a member of the McVittie family.

Cosmological black holes and white holes with time-dependent mass

We consider the causal structure of generalized uncharged McVittie spacetimes with increasing central mass $m (t)$ and positive Hubble factor $H (t)$. Under physically reasonable conditions, namely, a big bang singularity in the past, a positive cosmological constant and an upper limit to the central mass, we prove that the patch of the spacetime described by the cosmological time and areal radius coordinates is always geodesically incomplete, which implies the presence of event horizons in the spacetime. We also show that, depending on the asymptotic behavior of the $m$ and $H$ functions, the generalized McVittie spacetime can have a single black hole, a black-hole/white-hole pair or, differently from classic fixed-mass McVittie, a single white hole. A simple criterion is given to distinguish the different causal structures.

Horndeski meets McVittie: A scalar field theory for accretion onto cosmological black holes

We show that the generalized McVittie spacetime, which represents a black hole with time-dependent mass in an expanding universe, is an exact solution of a subclass of the Horndeski family of actions. The heat-flow term responsible for the energy transfer between the black hole and the cosmological background is generated by the higher-order kinetic gravity braiding term, which generalizes the cuscuton action that yields McVittie with constant mass as a solution. Finally, we show that this generalization can be understood in terms of a duality realized by a disformal transformation, connecting the cuscuton field theory to an extension of the Horndeski action which does not propagate any scalar degrees of freedom. Our finding opens a novel window into studies of non-trivial interactions between dark energy/modified gravity theories and astrophysical black holes.

Cosmological black holes from self-gravitating fields

Both cosmological expansion and black holes are ubiquitous features of our observable Universe, yet exact solutions connecting the two have remained elusive. To this end, we study self-gravitating classical fields within dynamical spherically symmetric solutions that can describe black holes in an expanding universe. After attempting a perturbative approach of a known black-hole solution with scalar hair, we show by exact methods that the unique scalar field action with first-order derivatives that can source shear-free expansion around a black hole requires noncanonical kinetic terms. The resulting action is an incompressible limit of k-essence, otherwise known as the cuscuton theory, and the spacetime it describes is the McVittie metric. We further show that this solution is an exact solution to the vacuum Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with anisotropic Weyl symmetry.

Separating expansion and collapse in general fluid models with heat flux

In this paper we consider spherically symmetric general fluids with heat flux, motivated by causal thermodynamics, and give the appropriate set of conditions that define separating shells defining the divide between expansion and collapse. To do so we add the new requirement that heat flux and its evolution vanish at the separating surface. We extend previous works with a fully nonlinear analysis in the 1+3 splitting, and present gauge-invariant results. The definition of the separating surface is inspired by the conservation of the Misner-Sharp mass, and is obtained by generalizing the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equilibrium and turnaround conditions. We emphasize the nonlocal character of these conditions as found in previous works and discuss connections to the phenomena of spacetime cracking and thermal peeling.

How the expansion of the universe determines the causal structure of McVittie spacetimes

We present a theorem which allows one to recognize and classify the asymptotic behavior and causal structure of McVittie metrics for different choices of scale factor, establishing whether a black hole or a pair black-white hole appears in the appropriate limit. Incidentally, the theorem also solves an apparent contradiction present in the literature over the causal structure analysis of the McVittie solution. Although the classification we present is not fully complete, we argue that this result covers most if not all physically relevant scenarios.

Realistic fluids as source for dynamically accreting black holes in a cosmological background

We show that a single imperfect fluid can be used as a source to obtain the generalized McVittie metric as an exact solution to Einstein's equations. The mass parameter in this metric varies with time thanks to a mechanism based on the presence of a temperature gradient. This fully dynamical solution is interpreted as an accreting black hole in an expanding universe if the metric asymptotes to Schwarzschild-de Sitter at temporal infinity. We present a simple but instructive example for the mass function and briefly discuss the structure of the apparent horizons and the past singularity.

The role of Dark Matter interaction in galaxy clusters

We consider a toy model to analyze the consequences of dark matter interaction with a dark energy background on the overall rotation of galaxy clusters and the misalignment between their dark matter and baryon distributions when compared to ΛCDM predictions. The interaction parameters are found via a genetic algorithm search. The results obtained suggest that interaction is a basic phenomenon whose effects are detectable even in simple models of galactic dynamics.

Consistency of the mass variation formula for black holes accreting cosmological fluids

We address the spherical accretion of generic fluids onto black holes. We show that, if the black hole metric satisfies certain conditions, in the presence of a test fluid it is possible to derive a fully relativistic prescription for the black hole mass variation. Although the resulting equation may seem obvious due to a form of it appearing as a step in the derivation of the Schwarzschild metric, this geometrical argument is necessary to fix the added degree of freedom one gets for allowing the mass to vary with time. This result has applications on cosmological accretion models and provides a derivation from first principles to serve as a base to the accretion equations already in use in the literature.

Analytical solutions of accreting black holes immersed in a Lambda-CDM model

The evolution of the mass of a black hole embedded in a universe filled with dark energy and cold dark matter is calculated in a closed form within a test fluid model in a Schwarzschild metric, taking into account the cosmological evolution of both fluids. The result describes exactly how accretion asymptotically switches from the matter-dominated to the Lambda-dominated regime. For early epochs, the black hole mass increases due to dark matter accretion, and on later epochs the increase in mass stops as dark energy accretion takes over. Thus, the unphysical behaviour of previous analyses is improved in this simple exact model.

Phantom Accretion by Black Holes and the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics

The accretion of a phantom fluid with non-zero chemical potential by black holes is discussed with basis on the Generalized Second Law of thermodynamics. For phantom fluids with positive temperature and negative chemical potential we demonstrate that the accretion process is possible, and that the condition guaranteeing the positiveness of the phantom fluid entropy coincides with the one required by Generalized Second Law. In particular, this result provides a complementary confirmation that cosmological phantom fluids do not need to have negative temperatures.

Evolution of Primordial Black Holes in a radiation and phantom energy environment

In this work we extend previous work on the evolution of a Primordial Black Hole (PBH) to address the presence of a dark energy component with a super-negative equation of state as a background, investigating the competition between the radiation accretion, the Hawking evaporation and the phantom accretion, the latter two causing a decrease on black hole mass. It is found that there is an instant during the matter-dominated era after which the radiation accretion becomes negligible compared to the phantom accretion. The Hawking evaporation may become important again depending on a mass threshold. The evaporation of PBHs is quite modified at late times by these effects, but only if the Generalized Second Law of thermodynamics is violated.
