Linear systems of rational curves on rational surfaces

Given a curve C on a projective nonsingular rational surface S, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we are interested in the set Omega_C of linear systems Lambda on S satisfying C is in Lambda, dim Lambda > 0, and the general member of Lambda is a rational curve. The main result of the paper gives a complete description of Omega_C and, in particular, characterizes the curves C for which Omega_C is non empty.

Tame and wild degree functions

We give examples of degree functions deg : R --> M, where R is a polynomial ring in 2 or 3 variables and M is either the integers or the natural numbers, whose behaviour with respect to derivations D : R --> R is pathological in the sense that deg(Dx) - deg(x) (where x in R \ {0}) is not bounded above. We also give several general results stating that such pathologies do not occur when the degree functions satisfy certain hypotheses.

Affine surfaces with trivial Makar-Limanov invariant

We study the class of 2-dimensional affine k-domains R satisfying ML(R) = k, where k is an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. In particular, we obtain the following result: Let R be a localization of a polynomial ring in finitely many variables over a field of characteristic zero. If ML(R) = K for some field K included in R and such that R has transcendence degree 2 over K, then R is K-isomorphic to K[X,Y,Z]/(XY-P(Z)) for some nonconstant polynomial P(Z) in K[Z].
