Trapped imbalanced fermionic superfluids in one dimension: A variational approach

We propose and analyze a variational wave function for a population-imbalanced one-dimensional Fermi gas that allows for Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type pairing correlations among the two fermion species, while also accounting for the harmonic confining potential. In the strongly interacting regime, we find large spatial oscillations of the order parameter, indicative of an FFLO state. The obtained density profiles versus imbalance are consistent with recent experimental results as well as with theoretical calculations based on combining Bethe ansatz with the local density approximation. Although we find no signature of the FFLO state in the densities of the two fermion species, we show that the oscillations of the order parameter appear in density-density correlations, both in-situ and after free expansion. Furthermore, above a critical polarization, the value of which depends on the interaction, we find the unpaired Fermi-gas state to be energetically more favorable.

Interface symmetry and spin control in topological insulator-semiconductor heterostructures

Heterostructures combining topological and non-topological materials constitute the next frontier in the effort to incorporate topological insulators (TIs) into functional electronic devices. We show that the properties of the interface states appearing at the planar boundary between a topologically-trivial semiconductor (SE) and a TI are controlled by the symmetry of the interface. In contrast to the well-studied helical Dirac surface states, SE-TI interface states exhibit elliptical contours of constant energy and complex spin textures with broken helicity. We derive a general effective Hamiltonian for SE-TI junctions, and propose experimental signatures such as an out of plane spin accumulation under a transport current and the opening of a spectral gap that depends on the direction of an applied in-plane magnetic field.

Universal collisionless transport of graphene

The impact of the electron-electron Coulomb interaction on the optical conductivity of graphene has led to a controversy that calls into question the universality of collisionless transport in this and other Dirac materials. Using a lattice calculation that avoids divergences present in previous nodal Dirac approaches, our work settles this controversy and obtains results in quantitative agreement with experiment over a wide frequency range. We also demonstrate that dimensional regularization methods agree, as long as the scaling properties of the conductivity and the regularization of the theory in modified dimension are correctly implemented. Tight-binding lattice and nodal Dirac theory calculations are shown to coincide at low energies even when the non-zero size of the atomic orbital wave function is included, conclusively demonstrating the universality of the optical conductivity of graphene.

Phase Diagram of a Strongly Interacting Spin-Imbalanced Fermi Gas

We obtain the phase diagram of spin-imbalanced interacting Fermi gases from measurements of density profiles of $^6$Li atoms in a harmonic trap. These results agree with, and extend, previous experimental measurements. Measurements of the critical polarization at which the balanced superfluid core vanishes generally agree with previous experimental results and with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations in the BCS and unitary regimes. We disagree with the QMC results in the BEC regime, however, where the measured critical polarizations are greater than theoretically predicted. We also measure the equation of state in the crossover regime for a gas with equal numbers of the two fermion spin states.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of two-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gases

The ground-state phase diagram of attractively-interacting Fermi gases in two dimensions with a population imbalance is investigated. We find the regime of stability for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, in which pairing occurs at finite wave vector, and determine the magnitude of the pairing amplitude $Δ$ and FFLO wavevector $q$ in the ordered phase, finding that $Δ$ can be of the order of the two-body binding energy. Our results rely on a careful analysis of the zero temperature gap equation for the FFLO state, which possesses nonanalyticities as a function of $Δ$ and $q$, invalidating a Ginzburg-Landau expansion in small $Δ$.

Pairing correlations in a trapped one-dimensional Fermi gas

We use a BCS-type variational wavefunction to study attractively-interacting quasi one-dimensional (1D) fermionic atomic gases, motivated by cold-atom experiments that access the 1D regime using an anisotropic harmonic trapping potential (with trapping frequencies $ω_x = ω_y \gg ω_z$) that confines the gas to a cigar-shaped geometry. To handle the presence of the trap along the $z$-direction, we construct our variational wavefunction from the harmonic oscillator Hermite functions that are the eigenstates of the single-particle problem. Using an analytic determination of the effective interaction among harmonic oscillator states along with a numerical solution of the resulting variational equations, we make specific experimental predictions for how pairing correlations would be revealed in experimental probes like the local density and the momentum correlation function.

A self-consistent Hartree-Fock approach for interacting bosons in optical lattices

A theoretical study of interacting bosons in a periodic optical lattice is presented. Instead of the commonly used tight-binding approach (applicable near the Mott insulating regime of the phase diagram), the present work starts from the exact single-particle states of bosons in a cubic optical lattice, satisfying the Mathieu equation, an approach that can be particularly useful at large boson fillings. The effects of short-range interactions are incorporated using a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, and predictions for experimental observables such as the superfluid transition temperature, condensate fraction, and boson momentum distribution are presented.

Density profiles and collective modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate with light-induced spin-orbit coupling

The phases of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with light-induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are studied within the mean-field approximation. The mixed BEC phase, in which the system condenses in a superposition of two plane wave states, is found to be stable for sufficiently small light-atom coupling, becoming unstable in a continuous fashion with increasing light-atom coupling. The structure of the phase diagram at fixed chemical potential for bosons with SOC is shown to imply an unusual density dependence for a trapped mixed BEC phase, with the density of one dressed spin state increasing with increasing radius, providing a unique experimental signature of this state. The collective Bogoliubov sound mode is shown to also provide a signature of the mixed BEC state, vanishing as the boundary to the regime of phase separation is approached.

Induced superfluidity of imbalanced Fermi gases near unitarity

The induced intraspecies interactions among the majority species, mediated by the minority species, is computed for a population-imbalanced two-component Fermi gas. Although the Feshbach-resonance mediated interspecies interaction is dominant for equal populations, leading to singlet s-wave pairing, we find that in the strongly imbalanced regime the induced intraspecies interaction leads to p-wave pairing and superfluidity of the majority species. Thus, we predict that the observed spin-polaron Fermi liquid state in this regime is unstable to p-wave superfluidity, in accordance with the results of Kohn and Luttinger, below a temperature that, near unitarity, we find to be within current experimental capabilities. Possible experimental signatures of the p-wave state using radio-frequency spectroscopy as well as density-density correlations after free expansion are presented.

Induced p-wave superfluidity in strongly interacting imbalanced Fermi gases

The induced interaction among the majority spin species, due to the presence of the minority species, is computed for the case of a population-imbalanced resonantly-interacting Fermi gas. It is shown that this interaction leads to an instability, at low temperatures, of the recently observed polaron Fermi liquid phase of strongly imbalanced Fermi gases to a p-wave superfluid state. We find that the associated transition temperature, while quite small in the weakly interacting BCS regime, is experimentally accessible in the strongly interacting unitary regime.

The response to dynamical modulation of the optical lattice for fermions in the Hubbard model

Fermionic atoms in a periodic optical lattice provide a realization of the single-band Hubbard model. Using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations along with the Maximum Entropy Method, we evaluate the effect of a time-dependent perturbative modulation of the optical lattice amplitude on atomic correlations, revealed in the fraction of doubly-occupied sites. Our treatment extends previous approaches which neglected the time dependence of the on-site interaction, and shows that this term changes the results in a quantitatively significant way. The effect of modulation depends strongly on the filling-- the response of the double occupation is significantly different in the half-filled Mott insulator from the doped Fermi liquid region.

Oscillatory pairing of fermions in spin-split traps

As a means of realizing oscillatory pairing between fermions, we study superfluid pairing between two fermion "spin" species that are confined to adjustable spin-dependent trapping potentials. Focusing on the one-dimensional limit, we find that with increasing separation between the spin-dependent traps the fermions exhibit distinct phases, including a fully paired phase, a spin-imbalanced phase with oscillatory pairing, and an unpaired fully spin-polarized phase. We obtain the phase diagram of fermions in such a spin-split trap and discuss signatures of these phases in cold-atom experiments.

Dynamical Cluster Quantum Monte Carlo Study of the Single Particle Spectra of Strongly Interacting Fermion Gases

We study the single-particle spectral function of resonantly-interacting fermions in the unitary regime, as described by the three-dimensional attractive Hubbard model in the dilute limit. Our approach, based on the Dynamical Cluster Approximation and the Maximum Entropy Method, shows the emergence of a gap with decreasing temperature, as reported in recent cold-atom photoemission experiments, for coupling values that span the BEC-BCS crossover. By comparing the behavior of the spectral function to that of the imaginary time dynamical pairing susceptibility, we attribute the development of the gap to the formation of local bound atom pairs.

Imbalanced Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases

We present an overview of recent developments in species-imbalanced ("polarized") Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases. We summarize the current status of thermodynamics of these systems in terms of a phase diagram as a function of the Feshbach resonance detuning, polarization and temperature. We review instabilities of the s-wave superfluidity across the BEC-BCS crossover to phase separation, FFLO states, polarized molecular superfluidity and the normal state, driven by the species imbalance. We discuss different models and approximations of this system and compare their predictions to current experiments.

Optical transparency of graphene as determined by the fine-structure constant

The observed 97.7% optical transparency of graphene has been linked to the value 1/137 of the fine structure constant, by using results for noninteracting Dirac fermions. The agreement in three significant figures requires an explanation for the apparent unimportance of the Coulomb interaction. Using arguments based on Ward identities, the leading corrections to the optical conductivity due to the Coulomb interactions are correctly computed (resolving a subtle theoretical issue) and shown to amount to only 1-2%, corresponding to 0.03-0.04% in the transparency.

Polarized superfluids near their tricritical point

We obtain a variety of predictions for the properties of population-imbalanced (or polarized) fermionic superfluids near their tricritical point. In the vicinity of the high-symmetry tricritical point, observable quantities such as the cloud shape, heat capacity, and local polarization should exhibit distinct behavior arising from the tricritical scaling laws, as well as logarithmic corrections to scaling reflecting the marginal nature of interactions.

Kondo-lattice screening in a d-wave superconductor

We show that local moment screening in a Kondo lattice with d-wave superconducting conduction electrons is qualitatively different from the corresponding single Kondo impurity case. Despite the conduction-electron pseudogap, Kondo-lattice screening is stable if the gap amplitude obeys $Δ<\sqrt{\tk D}$, in contrast to the single impurity condition $Δ<\tk$ (where $\tk$ is the Kondo temperature for $Δ= 0$ and D is the bandwidth). Our theory explains the heavy electron behavior in the d-wave superconductor Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}.

Quantum critical scaling in graphene

We show that the emergent relativistic symmetry of electrons in graphene near its quantum critical point (QCP) implies a crucial importance of the Coulomb interaction. We derive scaling laws, valid near the QCP, that dictate the nontrivial magnetic and charge response of interacting graphene. Our analysis yields numerous predictions for how the Coulomb interaction will be manifested in experimental observables such as the diamagnetic response and electronic compressibility.
