Effective Transport Equations for non-Abelian Plasmas

Starting from classical transport theory, we derive a set of covariant equations describing the dynamics of mean fields and their statistical fluctuations in a non-Abelian plasma in or out of equilibrium. A general procedure is detailed for integrating-out the fluctuations as to obtain the effective transport equations for the mean fields. In this manner, collision integrals for Boltzmann equations are obtained as correlators of fluctuations. The formalism is applied to a hot non-Abelian plasma close to equilibrium. We integrate-out explicitly the fluctuations with typical momenta of the Debye mass, and obtain the collision integral in a leading logarithmic approximation. We also identify a source for stochastic noise. The resulting dynamical equations are of the Boltzmann-Langevin type. While our approach is based on classical physics, we also give the necessary generalizations to study the quantum plasmas. Ultimately, the dynamical equations for soft and ultra-soft fields change only in the value for the Debye mass.

Mean Field Dynamics in Non-Abelian Plasmas from Classical Transport Theory

Based on classical transport theory, we present a general set of covariant equations describing the dynamics of mean fields and their statistical fluctuations in a non-Abelian plasma in or out-of-equilibrium. A procedure to obtain the collision integrals for the Boltzmann equation from the microscopic theory is described. As an application, we study a hot non-Abelian plasma close to equilibrium, where the fluctuations are integrated out explicitly. For soft fields, and at logarithmic accuracy, we obtain Bödeker's effective theory.

Wilsonian flow equation and thermal field theory

We review the use of Wilsonian renormalization group methods for quantum field theories at finite temperature. The implementations within both real and imaginary time formalism is carefully discussed. In particular, the question of gauge invariance is addressed in detail. A recently proposed real time thermal renormalization group is then used to derive the RG flows for Abelian Higgs models. Further applications are outlined.

On Gauge Invariant Wilsonian Flows

We investigate non-Abelian gauge theories within a Wilsonian Renormalisation Group approach. Our main question is: How close can one get to a gauge invariant flow, despite the fact that a Wilsonian coarse-graining seems to be incompatible with gauge invariance? We discuss the possible options in the case of quantum fluctuations, and argue that for thermal fluctuations a fully gauge invariant implementation can be obtained.

On Gauge Invariance and Ward Identities for the Wilsonian Renormalisation Group

We investigate non-Abelian gauge theories within a Wilsonian Renormalisation Group approach. The cut-off term inherent in this approach leads to a modified Ward identity (mWI). It is shown that this mWI is compatible with the flow and that the full effective action satisfies the usual Ward identity (WI). The universal 1-loop beta-function is derived within this approach and the extension to the 2-loop level is briefly outlined.

On General Axial Gauges for QCD

General Axial Gauges within a perturbative approach to QCD are plagued by 'spurious' propagator singularities. Their regularisation has to face major conceptual and technical problems. We show that this obstacle is naturally absent within a Wilsonian or 'Exact' Renormalisation Group approach and explain why this is so. The axial gauge turns out to be a fixed point under the flow, and the universal 1-loop running of the gauge coupling is computed.

Flow Equations for Yang-Mills Theories in General Axial Gauges

We present a formulation of non-Abelian gauge theories in general axial gauges using a Wilsonian (or 'Exact') Renormalisation Group. No 'spurious' propagator divergencies are encountered in contrast to standard perturbation theory. Modified Ward identities, compatible with the flow equation, ensure gauge invariance of physical Green functions. The axial gauge $n A=0$ is shown to be a fixed point under the flow equation. Possible non-perturbative approximation schemes and further applications are outlined.

On the Finite Temperature Phase Transition of Scalar QED

We analyse the finite temperature phase transition of scalar QED in euclidean spacetime. Analytical solutions of approximations to a Wilsonian renormalisation group equation are discussed. Special emphasis is put on the discussion of the $3d$ running of the Abelian charge and its effects on thermodynamical quantities. An upper bound for the range of first-order phase transitions is given. Our results are compared to those of resummed perturbation theory.

Scheme Independence at First Order Phase Transitions and the Renormalisation Group

We analyse approximate solutions to an exact renormalisation group equation with particular emphasis on their dependence on the regularisation scheme, which is kept arbitrary. Physical quantities related to the coarse-grained potential of scalar QED display universal behaviour for strongly first-order phase transitions. Only subleading corrections depend on the regularisation scheme and are suppressed by a sufficiently large UV scale. We calculate the relevant coarse-graining scale and give a condition for the applicability of Langer's theory of bubble nucleation.
