Photo-induced Hidden Phase of 1T-TaS2 with Tunable Lifetime

Phase transitions are ubiquitous, appearing at every length scale from atoms to galaxies. In condensed matter, ultrafast laser pulses drive materials to highly non-equilibrium conditions allowing transitions to new phases of matter not attainable under thermal excitation. Despite the intense scrutiny these hidden phases have received, the details of the dynamics of transition and reestablishment of the ground state remain largely unexplored. Here, we show the transition to a hidden phase of 1T-TaS2 driven by the screening of Coulombic repulsive interaction by photoexcited electrons. The temporal evolution of the coherent lattice dynamics highlights the existence of a novel phase with a laser fluence-dependent lifetime. The modeling of the dynamics reveals that the transition is caused by photo-excited carriers and it disappears at the rate of electron-phonon scattering. Our results demonstrate how femtosecond laser absorption leads to a decoupling of the electronic and lattice sub-systems, opening the way to novel states of matter, which can be controlled with light. We expect our investigation to be a starting point towards the development of novel ultrafast photonics devices, such as switches and modulators, taking advantage of fast and tunable phase transitions.

Probing electronic decoherence with high-resolution attosecond photoelectron interferometry

Quantum coherence plays a fundamental role in the study and control of ultrafast dynamics in matter. In the case of photoionization, entanglement of the photoelectron with the ion is a well known source of decoherence when only one of the particles is measured. Here we investigate decoherence due to entanglement of the radial and angular degrees of freedom of the photoelectron. We study two-photon ionization via the 2s2p autoionizing state in He using high spectral resolution photoelectron interferometry. Combining experiment and theory, we show that the strong dipole coupling of the 2s2p and 2p$^2$ states results in the entanglement of the angular and radial degrees of freedom. This translates, in angle integrated measurements, into a dynamic loss of coherence during autoionization.

Ultrafast Optical Generation of Coherent Bright and Dark Surface Phonon Polaritons in Nanowires

The coherence of polaritons plays a fundamental role in numerous recent experimental observations, from strong coupling to Bose-Einstein condensation, but accessing the coherence of polaritons is a difficult task due to the high energy of plasmons and excitons. However, surface phonon polaritons offer similar promises at much lower energy. Here, we demonstrate the possibility to use visible ultrafast lasers to generate and time resolve coherent surface phonon polaritons in nanowires. We show that these modes are generated through the ultrafast screening of the surface depletion field. By comparing experiments and FDTD simulations, we show that this method allows the simultaneous generation of dark and bright mode. Our observations open the way to deeper investigations of the role of coherence in the rich polariton physics.
