Étale groupoid algebras with coefficients in a sheaf and skew inverse semigroup rings

Given an action $φ$ of of inverse semigroup $S$ on a ring $A$ (with domain of $φ(s)$ denoted by $D_{s^*}$) we show that if the ideals $D_e$, with $e$ an idempotent, are unital, then the skew inverse semigroup ring $A\rtimes S$ can be realized as the convolution algebra of an ample groupoid with coefficients in a sheaf of rings. Conversely, we show that the convolution algebra of an ample groupoid with coefficients in a sheaf of rings is isomorphic to a skew inverse semigroup ring of this sort. We recover known results in the literature for Steinberg algebras over a field as special cases.

Ultragraph shift spaces and chaos

Motivated by C*-algebra theory, ultragraph edge shift spaces generalize shifts of finite type to the infinite alphabet case. In this paper we study several notions of chaos for ultragraph shift spaces. More specifically, we show that Li-Yorke, Devaney and distributional chaos are equivalent conditions for ultragraph shift spaces, and characterize this condition in terms of a combinatorial property of the underlying ultragraph. Furthermore, we prove that such properties imply the existence of a compact, perfect set which is distributionally scrambled of type 1 in the ultragraph shift space (a result that is not known for a labelled edge shift (with the product topology) of an infinite graph).

Representations and the reduction theorem for ultragraph Leavitt path algebras

In this paper we study representations of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras via branching systems and, using partial skew ring theory, prove the reduction theorem for these algebras. We apply the reduction theorem to show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras are semiprime and to completely describe faithfulness of the representations arising from branching systems, in terms of the dynamics of the branching systems. Furthermore, we study permutative representations and provide a sufficient criteria for a permutative representation of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra to be equivalent to a representation arising from a branching system. We apply this criteria to describe a class of ultragraphs for which every representation (satisfying a mild condition) is permutative and has a restriction that is equivalent to a representation arising from a branching system.

Continuous shift commuting maps between ultragraph shift spaces

Recently a generalization of shifts of finite type to the infinite alphabet case was proposed, in connection with the theory of ultragraph C*-algebras. In this work we characterize the class of continuous shift commuting maps between these spaces. In particular, we prove a Curtis-Hedlund-Lyndon type theorem and use it to completely characterize continuous, shift commuting, length preserving maps in terms of generalized sliding block codes.

Every Collinear Set in a Planar Graph Is Free

We show that if a planar graph $G$ has a plane straight-line drawing in which a subset $S$ of its vertices are collinear, then for any set of points, $X$, in the plane with $|X|=|S|$, there is a plane straight-line drawing of $G$ in which the vertices in $S$ are mapped to the points in $X$. This solves an open problem posed by Ravsky and Verbitsky in 2008. In their terminology, we show that every collinear set is free. This result has applications in graph drawing, including untangling, column planarity, universal point subsets, and partial simultaneous drawings.

On the K-theory of C*-algebras for substitution tilings (a pedestrian version)

Under suitable conditions, a substitution tiling gives rise to a Smale space, from which three equivalence relations can be constructed, namely the stable, unstable, and asymptotic equivalence relations. We denote with $S$, $U$, and $A$ their corresponding $C^*$-algebras in the sense of Renault. In this article we show that the $K$-theories of $S$ and $U$ can be computed from the cohomology and homology of a single cochain complex with connecting maps for tilings of the line and of the plane. Moreover, we provide formulas to compute the $K$-theory for these three $C^*$-algebras. Furthermore, we show that the $K$-theory groups for tilings of dimension 1 are always torsion free. For tilings of dimension 2, only $K_0(U)$ and $K_1(S)$ can contain torsion.

Dushnik-Miller dimension of d-dimensional tilings with boxes

Planar graphs are the graphs with Dushnik-Miller dimension at most three (W. Schnyder, Planar graphs and poset dimension, Order 5, 323-343, 1989). Consider the intersection graph of interior disjoint axis parallel rectangles in the plane. It is known that if at most three rectangles intersect on a point, then this intersection graph is planar, that is it has Dushnik-Miller dimension at most three. This paper aims at generalizing this from the plane to $R^d$ by considering tilings of $R^d$ with axis parallel boxes, where at most $d+1$ boxes intersect on a point. Such tilings induce simplicial complexes and we will show that those simplicial complexes have Dushnik-Miller dimension at most $d+1$.

Simplicity of skew inverse semigroup rings with applications to Steinberg algebras and topological dynamics

Given a partial action $π$ of an inverse semigroup $S$ on a ring $\mathcal{A}$ one may construct its associated skew inverse semigroup ring $\mathcal{A} \rtimes_πS$. Our main result asserts that, when $\mathcal{A}$ is commutative, the ring $\mathcal{A} \rtimes_πS$ is simple if, and only if, $\mathcal{A}$ is a maximal commutative subring of $\mathcal{A} \rtimes_πS$ and $\mathcal{A}$ is $S$-simple. We apply this result in the context of topological inverse semigroup actions to connect simplicity of the associated skew inverse semigroup ring with topological properties of the action. Furthermore, we use our result to present a new proof of the simplicity criterion for a Steinberg algebra $A_R(\mathcal{G})$ associated with a Hausdorff and ample groupoid $\mathcal{G}$.

Squares and associative representations of two dimensional evolution algebras

We associate an square to any two dimensional evolution algebra. This geometric object is uniquely determined, does not depend on the basis and describes the structure and the behaviour of the algebra. We determine the identities of degrees at most four, as well as derivations and automorphisms. We look at the group of automorphisms as an algebraic group, getting in this form a new algebraic invariant. The study of associative representations of evolution algebras is also started and we get faithful representations for most two-dimensional evolution algebras. In some cases we prove that faithful commutative and associative representations do not exist, giving raise to the class of what could be termed as "exceptional" evolution algebras (in the sense of not admitting a monomorphism to an associative algebra with deformed product).

Li-Yorke chaos for ultragraph shift spaces

Recently, in connection with C*-algebra theory, the first author and Danilo Royer introduced ultragraph shift spaces. In this paper we define a family of metrics for the topology in such spaces, and use these metrics to study the existence of chaos in the shift. In particular we characterize all ultragraph shift spaces that have Li-Yorke chaos (an uncountable scrambled set), and prove that such property implies the existence of a perfect and scrambled set in the ultragraph shift space. Furthermore, this scrambled set can be chosen compact, what is not the case for a labelled edge shift (with the product topology) of an infinite graph.

Dushnik-Miller dimension of TD-Delaunay complexes

TD-Delaunay graphs, where TD stands for triangular distance, is a variation of the classical Delaunay triangulations obtained from a specific convex distance function. Bonichon et. al. noticed that every triangulation is the TD-Delaunay graph of a set of points in $\mathbb{R}^2$, and conversely every TD-Delaunay graph is planar. It seems natural to study the generalization of this property in higher dimensions. Such a generalization is obtained by defining an analogue of the triangular distance for $\mathbb{R}^d$. It is easy to see that TD-Delaunay complexes of $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ are of Dushnik-Miller dimension $d$. The converse holds for $d=2$ or $3$ and it was conjectured independently by Mary and Evans et. al. to hold for larger $d$. Here we disprove the conjecture already for $d = 4$.

KMS and ground states on ultragraph C*-algebras

We describe KMS and ground states arising from a generalized gauge action on ultragraph C*-algebras. We focus on ultragraphs that satisfy Condition~(RFUM), so that we can use the partial crossed product description of ultragraph C*-algebras recently described by the second author and Danilo Royer. In particular, for ultragraphs with no sinks, we generalize a recent result by Toke Carlsen and Nadia Larsen: Given a time evolution on the C*-algebra of an ultragraph, induced by a function on the edge set, we characterize the KMS states in five different ways and ground states in four different ways. In both cases we include a characterization given by maps on the set of generalized vertices of the ultragraph. We apply this last result to show the existence of KMS and ground states for the ultragraph C*-algebra that is neither an Exel-Laca nor a graph C*-algebra.

Planar graphs as L-intersection or L-contact graphs

The L-intersection graphs are the graphs that have a representation as intersection graphs of axis parallel shapes in the plane. A subfamily of these graphs are {L, |, --}-contact graphs which are the contact graphs of axis parallel L, |, and -- shapes in the plane. We prove here two results that were conjectured by Chaplick and Ueckerdt in 2013. We show that planar graphs are L-intersection graphs, and that triangle-free planar graphs are {L, |, --}-contact graphs. These results are obtained by a new and simple decomposition technique for 4-connected triangulations. Our results also provide a much simpler proof of the known fact that planar graphs are segment intersection graphs.

The interplay between Steinberg algebras and partial skew rings

We study the interplay between Steinberg algebras and partial skew rings: For a partial action of a group in a Hausdorff, locally compact, totally disconnected topological space, we realize the associated partial skew group ring as a Steinberg algebra (over the transformation groupoid attached to the partial action). We then apply this realization to characterize diagonal preserving isomorphisms of partial skew group rings, over commutative algebras, in terms of continuous orbit equivalence of the associated partial actions. Finally, we show that any Steinberg algebra, associated to a Hausdorff ample groupoid, can be seen as a partial skew inverse semigroup ring.

Infinite alphabet edge shift spaces via ultragraphs and their C*-algebras

We define a notion of (one-sided) edge shift spaces associated to ultragraphs. In the finite case our notion coincides with the edge shift space of a graph. In general, we show that our space is metrizable and has a countable basis of clopen sets. We show that for a large class of ultragraphs the basis elements of the topology are compact. We examine shift morphisms between these shift spaces, and, for the locally compact case, show that if two (possibly infinite) ultragraphs have edge shifts that are conjugate, via a conjugacy that preserves length, then the associated ultragraph C*-algebras are isomorphic. To prove this last result we realize the relevant ultragraph C*-algebras as partial crossed products.

Branching Systems for Higher-Rank Graph C*-algebras

We define branching systems for finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. From these we construct concrete representations of higher-rank graph C*-algebras on Hilbert spaces. We prove a generalized Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for periodic single-vertex 2-graphs. We use this result to give a sufficient condition under which representations of periodic single-vertex 2-graph C*-algebras arising from branching systems are faithful.

Inverse semigroup shifts over countable alphabets

In this work we characterize shift spaces over infinite countable alphabets that can be endowed with an inverse semigroup operation. We give sufficient conditions under which zero-dimensional inverse semigroups can be recoded as shift spaces whose correspondent inverse semigroup operation is a 1-block operation, that is, it arises from a group operation on the alphabet. Motivated by this, we go on to study block operations on shift spaces and, in the end, we prove our main theorem, which states that Markovian shift spaces, which can be endowed with a 1-block inverse semigroup operation, are conjugate to the product of a full shift with a fractal shift.
