Moduli of K3 families over $\mathbb{P}^1$ and complex-hyperk\"ahler metrics induced by deformed twistor cycles

We answer a question posed independently by Fels-Huckleberry-Wolf and Looijenga concerning the geometric meaning of small deformations of twistor cycles in the K3 period domain. These are shown to induce complex-hyperk\"ahler metrics on members of the families via Penrose's Non-linear Graviton construction. On the way to proving this result, we construct a Hausdorff fine moduli space for families of marked K3 surfaces over smooth rational curves in the K3 period domain. Over an open subset containing all twistor cycles we construct a family of such families, which is a universal small deformation for every twistor family. Whenever possible, we extend the results to higher-dimensional irreducible holomorphic-symplectic manifolds.

Miyaoka-Yau inequalities and the topological characterization of certain klt varieties

Ball quotients, hyperelliptic varieties, and projective spaces are characterized by their Chern classes, as the varieties where the Miyaoka-Yau inequality becomes an equality. Ball quotients, Abelian varieties, and projective spaces are also characterized topologically: if a complex, projective manifold $X$ is homeomorphic to a variety of this type, then $X$ is itself of this type. In this paper, similar results are established for projective varieties with klt singularities that are homeomorphic to singular ball quotients, quotients of Abelian varieties, or projective spaces.

Milnor-Wood inequality for klt varieties of general type and uniformization

We generalize the definition of the Toledo invariant for representations of fundamental groups of smooth varieties of general type due to Koziarz and Maubon to the context of singular klt varieties, where the natural fundamental groups to consider are those of smooth loci. Assuming that the rank of the target Lie group is not greater than two, we show that the Toledo invariant satisfies a Milnor-Wood type inequality and we characterize the corresponding maximal representations.

Momentum maps and the K\"ahler property for base spaces of reductive principal bundles

We investigate the complex geometry of total spaces of reductive principal bundles over compact base spaces and establish a close relation between the K\"ahler property of the base, momentum maps for the action of a maximal compact subgroup on the total space, and the K\"ahler property of special equivariant compactifications. We provide many examples illustrating that the main result is optimal.

Reductive quotients of klt singularities

We prove that the quotient of a klt type singularity by a reductive group is of klt type. In particular, given a klt variety $X$ endowed with the action of a reductive group $G$ and admitting a quasi-projective good quotient $X\rightarrow X/\!/G$, we can find a boundary $B$ on $X/\!/G$ so that the pair $(X/\!/G,B)$ is klt. This applies for example to GIT-quotients of klt varieties. Our main result has consequences for complex spaces obtained as quotients of Hamiltonian K\"ahler $G$-manifolds, for collapsings of homogeneous vector bundles as introduced by Kempf, and for good moduli spaces of smooth Artin stacks. In particular, it implies that the good moduli space parametrizing $n$-dimensional K-polystable Fano manifolds of volume $v$ has klt type singularities. As a corresponding result regarding global geometry, we show that quotients of Mori Dream Spaces with klt Cox rings are Mori Dream Spaces with klt Cox ring. This in turn applies to show that projective GIT-quotients of varieties of Fano type are of Fano type; in particular, projective moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations are of Fano type.

Projectively flat KLT varieties

In the context of uniformisation problems, we study projective varieties with klt singularities whose cotangent sheaf admits a projectively flat structure over the smooth locus. Generalising work of Jahnke-Radloff, we show that torus quotients are the only klt varieties with semistable cotangent sheaf and extremal Chern classes. An analogous result for varieties with nef normalised cotangent sheaves follows.

Projective flatness over klt spaces and uniformisation of varieties with nef anti-canonical divisor

We give a criterion for the projectivisation of a reflexive sheaf on a klt space to be induced by a projective representation of the fundamental group of the smooth locus. This criterion is then applied to give a characterisation of finite quotients of projective spaces and Abelian varieties by $\mathbb{Q}$-Chern class (in)equalities and a suitable stability condition. This stability condition is formulated in terms of a naturally defined extension of the tangent sheaf by the structure sheaf. We further examine cases in which this stability condition is satisfied, comparing it to K-semistability and related notions.

Complex algebraic compactifications of the moduli space of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a projective manifold

In this paper we study the relationship between three compactifications of the moduli space of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a fixed Hermitian vector bundle over a projective algebraic manifold of arbitrary dimension. Via the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem, this space is analytically isomorphic to the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles, and as such it admits an algebraic compactification by Gieseker-Maruyama semistable torsion-free sheaves. A recent construction due to the first and third authors gives another compactification as a moduli space of slope semistable sheaves. In the present article, following fundamental work of Tian generalising the analysis of Uhlenbeck and Donaldson in complex dimension two, we define a gauge theoretic compactification by adding certain ideal connections at the boundary. Extending work of Jun Li in the case of bundles on algebraic surfaces, we exhibit comparison maps from the sheaf theoretic compactifications and prove their continuity. The continuity, together with a delicate analysis of the fibres of the map from the moduli space of slope semistable sheaves allows us to endow the gauge theoretic compactification with the structure of a complex analytic space.

Canonical complex extensions of K\"ahler manifolds

Given a complex manifold $X$, any K\"ahler class defines an affine bundle over $X$, and any K\"ahler form in the given class defines a totally real embedding of $X$ into this affine bundle. We formulate conditions under which the affine bundles arising this way are Stein and relate this question to other natural positivity conditions on the tangent bundle of $X$. For compact K\"ahler manifolds of non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature, we establish a close relation of this construction to adapted complex structures in the sense of Lempert--Sz\H{o}ke and to the existence question for good complexifications in the sense of Totaro. Moreover, we study projective manifolds for which the induced affine bundle is not just Stein but affine and prove that these must have big tangent bundle. In the course of our investigation, we also obtain a simpler proof of a result of Yang on manifolds having non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature and big tangent bundle.

Hamiltonian actions of unipotent groups on compact K\"ahler manifolds

We study meromorphic actions of unipotent complex Lie groups on compact K\"ahler manifolds using moment map techniques. We introduce natural stability conditions and show that sets of semistable points are Zariski-open and admit geometric quotients that carry compactifiable K\"ahler structures obtained by symplectic reduction. The relation of our complex-analytic theory to the work of Doran--Kirwan regarding the Geometric Invariant Theory of unipotent group actions on projective varieties is discussed in detail.

Harmonic metrics on Higgs sheaves and uniformization of varieties of general type

We prove a criterion for the existence of harmonic metrics on Higgs bundles that are defined on smooth loci of klt varieties. As one application, we resolve the quasi-etale uniformisation problem for minimal varieties of general type to obtain a complete numerical characterisation of singular quotients of the unit ball by discrete, co-compact groups of automorphisms that act freely in codimension one. As a further application, we establish a nonabelian Hodge correspondence on smooth loci of klt varieties.

Nonabelian Hodge Theory for klt spaces and descent theorems for vector bundles

We generalise Simpson's nonabelian Hodge correspondence to the context of projective varieties with klt singularities. The proof relies on a descent theorem for numerically flat vector bundles along birational morphisms. In its simplest form, this theorem asserts that given any klt variety X and any resolution of singularities, then any vector bundle on the resolution that appears to come from X numerically, does indeed come from X. Furthermore and of independent interest, a new restriction theorem for semistable Higgs sheaves defined on the smooth locus of a normal, projective variety is established.

Klt varieties with trivial canonical class -- Holonomy, differential forms, and fundamental groups

We investigate the holonomy group of singular K\"ahler-Einstein metrics on klt varieties with numerically trivial canonical divisor. Finiteness of the number of connected components, a Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors, and a connection between irreducibility of holonomy representations and stability of the tangent sheaf are established. As a consequence, known decompositions for tangent sheaves of varieties with trivial canonical divisor are refined. In particular, we show that up to finite quasi-\'etale covers, varieties with strongly stable tangent sheaf are either Calabi-Yau or irreducible holomorphic symplectic. These results form one building block for H\"oring-Peternell's recent proof of a singular version of the Beauville-Bogomolov Decomposition Theorem.

Uniformisation of higher-dimensional minimal varieties

After a historical discussion of classical uniformisation results for Riemann surfaces, of problems appearing in higher dimensions, and of uniformisation results for projective manifolds with trivial or ample canonical bundle, we introduce the basic technical concepts and sketch the ideas of the proofs for recent uniformisation theorems for singular varieties obtained by the authors in collaboration with Thomas Peternell.

A Master Space for Moduli Spaces of Gieseker-Stable Sheaves

We consider a notion of stability for sheaves, which we call multi-Gieseker stability that depends on several ample polarisations $L_1, \dots, L_N$ and on an additional parameter $\sigma \in \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}^N\setminus\{0\}$. The set of semi stable sheaves admits a projective moduli space $\mathcal M_{\sigma}$. We prove that given a finite collection of parameters $\sigma$, there exists a sheaf- and representation-theoretically defined master space $Y$ such that each corresponding moduli space is obtained from $Y$ as a Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) quotient. In particular, any two such spaces are related by a finite number of "Thaddeus-flips". As a corollary, we deduce that any two Gieseker-moduli space of sheaves (with respect to different polarisations $L_1$ and $L_2$) are related via a GIT-master space. This confirms an old expectation and generalises results from the surface case to arbitrary dimension.

The Miyaoka-Yau inequality and uniformisation of canonical models

We establish the Miyaoka-Yau inequality in terms of orbifold Chern classes for the tangent sheaf of any complex projective variety of general type with klt singularities and nef canonical divisor. In case equality is attained for a variety with at worst terminal singularities, we prove that the associated canonical model is the quotient of the unit ball by a discrete group action.

Variation of Gieseker moduli spaces via quiver GIT

We introduce a notion of stability for sheaves with respect to several polarisations that generalises the usual notion of Gieseker-stability. We prove, under a boundedness assumption, which we show to hold on threefolds or for rank two sheaves on base manifolds of arbitrary dimension, that semistable sheaves have a projective coarse moduli space that depends on a natural stability parameter. We then give two applications of this machinery. First, we show that given a real ample class $ω\in N^1(X)_\mathbb{R}$ on a smooth projective threefold $X$ there exists a projective moduli space of sheaves that are Gieseker-semistable with respect to $ω$. Second, we prove that given any two ample line bundles on $X$ the corresponding Gieseker moduli spaces are related by Thaddeus-flips.
