Reformulating the NMR Quantum Mechanics Fundamental Aspects: Spin 1/2 Evolution in Magnetic Field Gradients

Magnetization of a spin1/2 set is determined by means of their individual wave function. The theoretical treatment based on the fundamental axioms of quantum mechanics and solving explicitly Schr\"odinger equation gives the evolution of spin1/2 system driven by magnetic fields. In this work we consider the energy of the spin system interacting with magnetic fields and all the other parts of the energy as a constant reservoir. Solving this complete Hamiltonian can explain the measured sign change of nuclear spin noise spectra compared to conventional NMR experiments and the possibility to make NMR images without radio frequency magnetic fields. The possibility to make NMR images without RF magnetic fields is an indication that entangled spin1/2 states can be manipulated by magnetic field gradients, opening a new way to perform quantum computation by NMR.

Motion of free spins and NMR imaging without a radio-frequency magnetic field

NMR imaging without any radio-frequency magnetic field is explained by a quantum treatment of independent spin~$\tfrac 12$. The total magnetization is determined by means of their individual wave function. The theoretical treatment, based on fundamental axioms of quantum mechanics and solving explicitly the Schrödinger equation with the kinetic energy part which gives the motion of free spins, is recalled. It explains the phase shift of the spin noise spectrum with its amplitude compared to the conventional NMR spectrum. Moreover it explains also the relatively good signal to noise ratio of NMR images obtained without a RF pulse. This derivation should be helpful for new magnetic resonance imaging sequences or for developing quantum computing by NMR.

Nuclear spin interferences in bulk water at room temperature

Nuclear spin interference effects generated in a macroscopic sample of 10ml degassed water are detected in a simple NMR experiment. A π/2 - τ- π/2 RF double pulse sequence (Ramsey sequence) is applied to the water sample immersed in a static magnetic field B0 " 4.7T. For a homogeneity of B0 of the order of ΔB0/B0 = 2 . 10^{-8}, the nuclear spin interference term is controlled with a maximum relative deviation of 9.7 %. These results are a first step to manipulation of nuclear spin coherence of water molecules.
