Analytic Continuation of Liouville Theory

Correlation functions in Liouville theory are meromorphic functions of the Liouville momenta, as is shown explicitly by the DOZZ formula for the three-point function on the sphere. In a certain physical region, where a real classical solution exists, the semiclassical limit of the DOZZ formula is known to agree with what one would expect from the action of the classical solution. In this paper, we ask what happens outside of this physical region. Perhaps surprisingly we find that, while in some range of the Liouville momenta the semiclassical limit is associated to complex saddle points, in general Liouville's equations do not have enough complex-valued solutions to account for the semiclassical behavior. For a full picture, we either must include "solutions" of Liouville's equations in which the Liouville field is multivalued (as well as being complex-valued), or else we can reformulate Liouville theory as a Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions, in which the requisite solutions exist in a more conventional sense. We also study the case of "timelike" Liouville theory, where we show that a proposal of Al. B. Zamolodchikov for the exact three-point function on the sphere can be computed by the original Liouville path integral evaluated on a new integration cycle.

Operator Dictionaries and Wave Functions in AdS/CFT and dS/CFT

Dual AdS/CFT correlators can be computed in two ways: differentiate the bulk partition function with respect to boundary conditions, or extrapolate bulk correlation functions to the boundary. These dictionaries were conjectured to be equivalent by Banks, Douglas, Horowitz, and Martinec. We revisit this question at the level of bulk path integrals, showing that agreement in the presence of interactions requires careful treatment of the renormalization of bulk composite operators. By contrast, we emphasize that proposed dS/CFT analogues of the two dictionaries are inequivalent. Next, we show quite generally that the wave function for Euclidean AdS analytically continues to the dS wave function with Euclidean initial conditions. Most of our arguments consider interacting fields on a fixed background, but in a final section we discuss the inclusion of bulk dynamical gravity.

Crunches, Hats, and a Conjecture

Our purpose in this paper is to discuss criteria for the existence of a precise dual description of a cosmology. A number of exact descriptions exist for flat and anti de Sitter backgrounds and possibly for open FRW universes that nucleate in an eternally inflating background. In addition duals have been proposed for de Sitter space, and for crunching FRW bubbles with negative cosmological constant. In the latter cases there is reason to think the dualities are at best approximate. One of our primary purposes is to analyze the quality of these descriptions, i.e., how exact they can be made. Maldacena's recent discussion of dualities involving crunching FRW cosmologies provides an opportunity for exploring some of these question.

Metastability in Anti de Sitter Space

I discuss conceptual issues associated with the presence of metastable AdS vacua in the string landscape. The geometry of the decay from one AdS to another is presented in detail, and various subtleties that are not present for flat or dS vacua are demonstrated and analyzed. I use mostly semiclassical gravity, but I will consider the implications for recent attempts to construct field theory duals of metastable AdS vacua and also possible relevance to the study of eternal inflation.

A Simple Bound on the Error of Perturbation Theory in Quantum Mechanics

I provide a straightforward proof that a simple harmonic oscillator perturbed by an (almost) arbitrary positive interaction has a perturbative expansion for any finite-time Euclidian transition amplitude which obeys the following result: the difference of the sum of the first N terms of the series and the exact result is bounded in absolute value by the next term in the series. The proof makes no assumptions about either the strength of the interactions or the convergence of the perturbation series. I then argue that the result generalizes immediately to a much broader class of quantum mechanical systems, including bare perturbation theory in quantum field theory. The case of renormalized perturbation theory is more subtle and remains open, as does the generalization to energy levels and connected S-matrix elements.
