These are notes of lectures given at the school `Birational Geometry of Hypersurfaces' in Gargnano in March 2018. The main goal was to discuss the Hodge structures that come naturally associated with a cubic fourfold. The emphasis is on the Hodge and lattice theoretic aspects with many technical details worked out explicitly. More geometric or derived results are only hinted at.
We prove that isogenous K3 surfaces have isomorphic Chow motives. This provides a motivic interpretation of a long standing conjecture of Safarevich which has been settled only recently by Buskin. The main step consists of a new proof of Safarevich's conjecture that circumvents the analytic parts in Buskin's approach, avoiding twistor spaces and non-algebraic K3 surfaces.
We observe that derived equivalent K3 surfaces have isomorphic Chow motives.
The Jacobian ring J(X) of a smooth hypersurface determines its isomorphism type. This has been used by Donagi and others to prove the generic global Torelli theorem for hypersurfaces in many cases. In Voisin's original proof of the global Torelli theorem for smooth cubic fourfolds the Jacobian ring does not intervene. In this paper we present a proof of the global Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds that relies on the Jacobian ring and the (derived) global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces. It emphasizes, once again, the relation between K3 surfaces and smooth cubic fourfolds. More generally, for a variant of Hochschild cohomology of Kuznetsov's category (together with the degree shift functor) associated with an arbitrary smooth hypersurface we construct a graded ring homomorphism from the Jacobian ring to it, which is shown to be bijective whenever Kuznetsov's category is a Calabi-Yau category.
Smooth cubic fourfolds are linked to K3 surfaces via their Hodge structures, due to work of Hassett, and via Kuznetsov's K3 category A. The relation between these two viewpoints has recently been elucidated by Addington and Thomas. In this paper, both aspects are studied further and extended to twisted K3 surfaces, which in particular allows us to determine the group of autoequivalences of A for the general cubic fourfold. Furthermore, we prove finiteness results for cubics with equivalent K3 categories and study periods of cubics in terms of generalized K3 surfaces.
In this note we interpret a recent result of Gaberdiel, Hohenegger and Volpato in terms of derived equivalences of K3 surfaces. We prove that there is a natural bijection between subgroups of the Conway group Co_1 with invariant lattice of rank at least four and groups of symplectic derived equivalences of D(Coh(X)) of projective K3 surfaces fixing a stability condition.
The notion of constant cycle curves on K3 surfaces is introduced. These are curves that do not contribute to the Chow group of the ambient K3 surface. Rational curves are the most prominent examples. We show that constant cycle curves behave in some respects like rational curves. E.g. using Hodge theory one finds that in each linear system there are at most finitely many such curves of bounded order. Over finite fields, any curve is expected to be a constant cycle curve, whereas over number fields this does not hold. The relation to the Bloch--Beilinson conjectures for K3 surfaces over global fields is discussed.
These are notes of a course given at the 'school on moduli spaces' at the Newton Institute in January 2011. The abstract theory of stability conditions (due to Bridgeland and Douglas) on abelian and triangulated categories is developed via tilting and t-structures. Special emphasis is put on the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties (in particular for curves and K3 surfaces). The lectures were targeted at an audience with little prior knowledge of triangulated categories and stability conditions but with an interest in vector bundles on curves.
It is observed that the recent result of Voisin and earlier ones of the author suffice to prove in complete generality that symplectic automorphisms of finite order of a K3 surface X act as identity on the Chow group CH^2(X) of zero-cycles.
According to the Bloch-Beilinson conjectures, an automorphism of a K3 surface X that acts as the identity on the transcendental lattice should act trivially on CH^2(X). We discuss this conjecture for symplectic involutions and prove it in one third of all cases. The main point is to use special elliptic K3 surfaces and stable maps to produce covering families of elliptic curves on the generic K3 surface that are invariant under the involution.
Compact hyperkaehler manifolds are higher-dimensional generalizations of K3 surfaces. The classical Global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces, however, does not hold in higher dimensions. More precisely, a compact hyperkaehler manifold is in general not determined by its natural weight-two Hodge structure. The text gives an account of a recent theorem of M. Verbitsky, which can be regarded as a weaker version of the Global Torelli theorem phrased in terms of the injectivity of the period map on the connected components of the moduli space of marked manifolds.
For a projective K3 surface X we introduce the dense triangulated subcategory S^* of the bounded derived category D^b(Coh(X)) of coherent sheaves on X that is generated by spherical objects. For a K3 surface X over \bar Q it is shown that S^* admits a bounded t-structure if and only if the Bloch-Beilinson conjecture holds for X, i.e. CH^2(X)=Z.
An object in the bounded derived category D^b(Coh(X)) of coherent sheaves on a complex projective K3 surface X is spherical if it is rigid and simple. Although spherical objects form only a discrete set in the moduli stack of complexes, they determine much of the structure of X and D^b(Coh(X)). Here we show that a stability condition on D^b(Coh(X)) is determined by the stability of spherical objects.
This survey is based on my talk at the conference `Classical algebraic geometry today' at the MSRI. Some new results on the action of symplectomorphisms on the Chow group are added.
We study the general fibre of a formal deformation over the formal disk of a projective variety from the view point of abelian and derived categories. The abelian category of coherent sheaves of the general fibre is constructed directly from the formal deformation and is shown to be linear over the field of Laurent series. The various candidates for the derived category of the general fibre are compared. If the variety is a surface with trivial canonical bundle, we show that the derived category of the general fibre is again a linear triangulated category with a Serre functor given by the square of the shift functor.
Every Fourier--Mukai equivalence between the derived categories of two K3 surfaces induces a Hodge isometry of their cohomologies viewed as Hodge structures of weight two endowed with the Mukai pairing. We prove that this Hodge isometry preserves the natural orientation of the four positive directions. This leads to a complete description of the action of the group of all autoequivalences on cohomology very much like the classical Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces determining all Hodge isometries that are induced by automorphisms.
We show that for a K3 surface X the finitely generated subring R(X) of the Chow ring introduced by Beauville and Voisin is preserved under derived equivalences. This is proved by analyzing Chern characters of spherical bundles. As for a K3 surface X defined over a number field all spherical bundles on the associated complex K3 surface are defined over $\bar\QQ$, this is compatible with the Bloch-Beilinson conjecture. Besides the work of Beauville and Voisin, Lazarfeld's result on Brill-Noether theory for curves in K3 surfaces and the deformation theory developed with Macri and Stellari in arXiv:0710.1645 are central for the discussion.
