The impact of future $D$- and $B$-meson measurements with the SMOG2 program at LHCb on the determination of nuclear parton distribution functions

We perform an analysis of the potential impact of future $D$- and $B$-meson measurement within the SMOG2 fixed-target program at the LHCb experiment on nuclear parton distribution functions. Following~\cite{Bursche:2018orf}, we assume that SMOG2 will collect data for five nuclear targets: He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe and hydrogen which will provide a baseline for constructing nuclear ratios. The analysis is performed by using the PDF reweighting method. We demonstrate that such a measurement will allow to considerably reduce the current uncertainties of the nuclear gluon distribution and, to some extent, even the uncertainties of the light sea-quark distributions. Furthermore, it will provide the first possibility to systematically study the current assumptions on the $A$-dependence of the nuclear parton distributions.

Automated NLO calculations for asymmetric hadron-hadron collisions in MadGraph5_aMC@NLO

We have extended {\tt MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO} capabilities by implementing computations for asymmetric hadron-hadron collisions, including proton-nucleus, pion-hadron or nucleus-nucleus collisions in order to obtain a tool for automated perturbative computations of cross sections (or ratios of cross sections) in asymmetric reactions at next-to-leading (NLO) order in $α_S$ in collinear factorisation. This tool, like the original symmetric version of \texttt{MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO}, automatically computes cross sections for different factorisation and renormalisation scales and PDFs provided by the {\tt LHAPDF} library, thereby allowing for an easy assessment of the associated theoretical uncertainties. In this paper, we present the validation of our code using $W$ and $Z$ boson production in $p$Pb collisions and Drell-Yan-pair production in $πW$ collisions. We also illustrate the capabilities of the framework by providing cross section and nuclear modification factors with their uncertainties for the production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons, charm and bottom quarks as well as associated production of $b\bar b+H^0$ in $p$Pb collisions at the LHC.

A technique to study the elastic and inelastic interaction of quarkonium with hadrons using femtoscopic correlations

We present a method for the measurement of parameters of elastic and inelastic interactions of charmonium with hadrons. In this technique, we use femtoscopic analysis of charmonium-hadron correlations at low relative momentum and the Lednicky-Lyuboshitz analytical model to extract the interaction parameters. We argue that such a study is already feasible in the LHCb experiment at the LHC, and we discuss the prospects for studies in the STAR at RHIC and other experiments at the LHC.

Estimation of the freeze-out parameters reachable in the AFTER@LHC project

Estimation of the freeze-out parameters as the function of rapidity in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=72$ GeV in the AFTER@LHC project is performed. The conventional hadron resonance gas model is used for the analysis of the events generated by the UrQMD model. The results indicate that one may obtain at least $2.5$ times increase of baryon chemical potential $μ_B$ in the forward rapidity range as compared to the mid-rapidity. The $μ_B$ values in the rapidity range of $0 < y < 4.5$ for AFTER@LHC are comparable to that covered by the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program. Thus, a rapidity scan in the AFTER@LHC project provides a complementary approach to study the QCD phase diagram.

Feasibility Studies for Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry Measurements at a Fixed-Target Experiment Using the LHC Proton and Lead Beams (AFTER@LHC)

The measurement of Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetries, $A_N$, for various quarkonium states and Drell-Yan lepton pairs can shed light on the orbital angular momentum of quarks and gluons, a fundamental ingredient of the proton-spin puzzle. The AFTER@LHC proposal combines a unique kinematic coverage and large luminosities thanks to the Large Hadron Collider beams to deliver precise measurements, complementary to the knowledge provided by collider experiments such as at RHIC. In this paper, we report on sensitivity studies for $J/ψ$, $Υ$ and Drell-Yan $A_N$ done using the performance of LHCb-like or ALICE-like detectors, combined with polarised gaseous hydrogen and helium-3 targets. In particular, such analyses will provide us with new insights and knowledge about transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions for quarks and gluons and on twist-3 collinear matrix elements in the proton and the neutron.

Prospects for quarkonia production studies in U+U collisions

Collisions of deformed uranium nuclei provide a unique opportunity to study the spatial dependence of charmonium in-medium effects. By selecting the orientations of the colliding nuclei, different path lengths through the nuclear medium could be selected within the same experimental environment. In addition, higher energy densities can be achieved in U+U collisions relative to Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we investigate the prospects for charmonium studies with U+U collisions. We discuss the effects of shadowing and nuclear absorption on the J/ψ yield. We introduce a new observable which could help distinguish between different types of J/ψ interactions in hot and dense matter.
