Bs mixing observables and Vtd/Vts from sum rules

We consider the effects of a non-vanishing strange-quark mass in the determination of the full basis of dimension six matrix elements for $B_{s}$ mixing, in particular we get for the ratio of the $V-A$ Bag parameter in the $B_s$ and $B_d$ system: $\overline{B}^s_{Q_1} / \overline{B}^d_{Q_1} = 0.987^{+0.007}_{-0.009}$. Combining these results with the most recent lattice values for the ratio of decay constants $f_{B_s} / f_{B_d}$ we obtain the most precise determination of the ratio $ξ= f_{B_s} \sqrt{\overline{B}^s_{Q_1}}/ f_{B_d} \sqrt{\overline{B}^d_{Q_1}} = 1.2014^{+0.0065}_{-0.0072}$ in agreement with recent lattice determinations. We find $ΔM_s=(18.5_{-1.5}^{+1.2})\text{ps}^{-1}$ and $ΔM_d=(0.547_{-0.046}^{+0.035})\text{ps}^{-1}$ to be consistent with experiments at below one sigma. Assuming the validity of the SM, our calculation can be used to directly determine the ratio of CKM elements $|V_{td} / V_{ts} | = 0.2045^{+0.0012}_{-0.0013}$, which is compatible with the results from the CKM fitting groups, but again more precise.

Strong Baselines for Complex Word Identification across Multiple Languages

Complex Word Identification (CWI) is the task of identifying which words or phrases in a sentence are difficult to understand by a target audience. The latest CWI Shared Task released data for two settings: monolingual (i.e. train and test in the same language) and cross-lingual (i.e. test in a language not seen during training). The best monolingual models relied on language-dependent features, which do not generalise in the cross-lingual setting, while the best cross-lingual model used neural networks with multi-task learning. In this paper, we present monolingual and cross-lingual CWI models that perform as well as (or better than) most models submitted to the latest CWI Shared Task. We show that carefully selected features and simple learning models can achieve state-of-the-art performance, and result in strong baselines for future development in this area. Finally, we discuss how inconsistencies in the annotation of the data can explain some of the results obtained.

A combined NMR and DFT study of Narrow Gap Semiconductors: The case of PbTe

In this study we present an alternative approach to separating contributions to the NMR shift originating from the Knight shift and chemical shielding by a combination of experimental solid-state NMR results and ab initio calculations. The chemical and Knight shifts are normally distinguished through detailed studies of the resonance frequency as function of temperature and carrier concentration, followed by extrapolation of the shift to zero carrier concentration. This approach is time-consuming and requires studies of multiple samples. Here, we analyzed $^{207}$Pb and $^{125}$Te NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates and NMR shifts for bulk and nanoscale PbTe. The shifts are compared with calculations of the $^{207}$Pb and $^{125}$Te chemical shift resonances to determine the chemical shift at zero charge carrier concentration. The results are in good agreement with literature values from carrier concentration-dependent studies. The measurements are also compared to literature reports of the $^{207}$Pb and $^{125}$Te Knight shifts of $n$- and $p$-type PbTe semiconductors. The literature data have been converted to the currently accepted shift scale. We also provide possible evidence for the "self-cleaning effect" property of PbTe nanocrystals whereby defects are removed from the core of the particles, while preserving the crystal structure.

Pseudo-Degeneracy in Handbell Modes

The vibrational modes of handbells exist in nearly-degenerate pairs which have been split by nonuniformities in the bell. The possibility of intentionally re-combining a pair into pseudo-degeneracy was explored by adding mass to various locations on a C4 handbell. Depending on the location and mass added to the bell, the modes can be shifted in position and frequency as observed by a real-time holographic interferometry system. By moving and varying the added mass, one pair of modes was successfully brought into a pseudo-degeneracy.
