The evolution of superbubbles and the detection of Lyman alpha in star-forming galaxies

The detection of Ly alpha emission in star-forming galaxies in different shapes and intensities (always smaller than predicted for case B recombination) has puzzled the astronomical community for more than a decade. Here we use two dimensional calculations to follow the evolution of superbubbles and of the H II regions generated by the output of UV photons from massive stars. We show the impact caused by massive star formation in the ISM of different galaxies and we look at the conditions required to detect Ly alpha emission from a nuclear H II region, and the variety of profiles that may be expected as a function of time.

Wolf-Rayet stars as tracing the AGN-starburst connection

We stress the importance of Wolf-Rayet stars for the understanding of the AGN phenomenon in galaxies. WR stars provide an unique opportunity to explore from the ground whether non-thermal nuclear activity and circumnuclear starbursts are connected. We review the known reported WR signatures observed so far in AGNs and point out some intrincacies related to the analysis of the spectra, linked to reddening correction, the origin of the Hbeta line, etc. Finally, we advocate that integral field spectroscopy is a very promising tool to study this problem and present preliminary results of a long-term project that have been obtained at the CFHT in 1998.

Populations of WC and WN stars in WR galaxies: new constraints on starburst parameters

Detection and analysis of Wolf-Rayet (WR) star populations in young starbursts is a powerful tool to reveal the properties of the star-forming events. We present new high S/N optical spectra of a sample of well-known WR galaxies, in which we detected for the first time the spectral signature of WC stars. The detailed comparison of WN and WC star populations derived in these galaxies, with the most recent model predictions, allows to put tight constraints on starburst parameters, such as the age and duration of the burts, and the IMF.

Gas-Rich Local Dwarf Star-Forming Galaxies and their connection with the Distant Universe

I discuss the properties of gas-rich forming galaxies. I particularly emphasize the latest results on Lyman alpha emission that are relevant to the search of distant young galaxies. The interdependance of the Lyman alpha escape with the properties of the ISM in starburst galaxies is outlined. A new model from G. Tenorio-Tagle and his collaborators explaining Lyman alpha profiles in starburst galaxies from the hydrodynamics of superbubbles powered by massive stars is presented. I stress again that since Lyman alpha is primarely a diagnostic of the ISM, it is mandatory to understand how the ISM and Lyman alpha are related to firmly relate Lyman alpha to the cosmic star-formation rate.

Populations of WC and WN stars in Wolf-Rayet galaxies

We report the detection of WC stars in 5 Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies: He 2-10, NGC 3049, NGC 3125, NGC 5253 and Tol 89. The faint broad CIV5808 line requires sufficiently high S/N to be detected explaining the non-detection of this WC feature in previous observations. From the WR emission lines we conclude that all regions (except NGC 3049) contain a mixed population of WNL, and early WC stars. A spatial offset between the nebular emission and stellar light is observed in 2 objects. Due to age differences the nebular structures around the WR regions are possibly smaller than those mainly energized by SNe. The spatial distribution of WR stars follows the stellar continuum. We derive the absolute number of WR stars of different subtypes. The WC/WN ratios have typical values between 0.2-0.4, and show no clear trend with metallicity (Z). For low-Z objects, these values are larger than the observed WC/WN ratios in Local Group objects, but compatible with expectations for short bursts of if stellar evolution models with high mass loss are used. The ages of the starburst regions are 3-6 Myr; the burst duration must not exceed 2-4 Myr to account for the high population of WR stars, even if emission line stars similar to those in R136 and NGC 3603 are common in starbursts. Within the uncertainties most of the observed quantities are reproduced by models with a Salpeter IMF. Although some WR lines are stronger than predicted, no clear case requiring a significantly flatter IMF is found. IMF slopes much steeper than Salpeter may, however, not be compatible with our data. Detection of Wolf-Rayet stars of WN and WC subtype in Super Star Clusters of NGC 5253

We present spectroscopic observations of the central star clusters in NGC 5253 the aim of which is to search for WC stars. Our observations show the presence of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars not only of WN but also of WC subtype in two star forming regions corresponding to the maximum optical and UV emission. The massive star population we derive is consistent with young bursts of ~3 and 4 Myr. The region of maximum optical emission is found to provide the dominant contribution of the ionizing flux as opposed to the less extinguished region of maximum UV brightness. The presence of WR stars near the N-enriched regions found by Walsh & Roy (1987, 1989) and Kobulnicky et al. (1997) suggests they are a possible source of N. It is presently unclear whether or not our detection of WC stars is compatible with the normal observed He/O and C/O abundance ratios.
