Quasinormal Quantization in deSitter Spacetime

A scalar field in four-dimensional deSitter spacetime (dS_4) has quasinormal modes which are singular on the past horizon of the south pole and decay exponentially towards the future. These are found to lie in two complex highest-weight representations of the dS_4 isometry group SO(4,1). The Klein-Gordon norm cannot be used for quantization of these modes because it diverges. However a modified `R-norm', which involves reflection across the equator of a spatial S^3 slice, is nonsingular. The quasinormal modes are shown to provide a complete orthogonal basis with respect to the R-norm. Adopting the associated R-adjoint effectively transforms SO(4,1) to the symmetry group SO(3,2) of a 2+1-dimensional CFT. It is further shown that the conventional Euclidean vacuum may be defined as the state annihilated by half of the quasinormal modes, and the Euclidean Green function obtained from a simple mode sum. Quasinormal quantization contrasts with some conventional approaches in that it maintains manifest dS-invariance throughout. The results are expected to generalize to other dimensions and spins.

The Gravity Duals of Modular Hamiltonians

In this work, we investigate modular Hamiltonians defined with respect to arbitrary spatial regions in quantum field theory states which have semi-classical gravity duals. We find prescriptions in the gravity dual for calculating the action of the modular Hamiltonian on its defining state, including its dual metric, and also on small excitations around the state. Curiously, use of the covariant holographic entanglement entropy formula leads us to the conclusion that the modular Hamiltonian, which in the quantum field theory acts only in the causal completion of the region, does not commute with bulk operators whose entire gauge-invariant description is space-like to the causal completion of the region.

Exact results for five-dimensional superconformal field theories with gravity duals

We apply the technique of supersymmetric localization to exactly compute the $S^5$ partition function of several large $N$ superconformal field theories in five dimensions that have $AdS_6$ duals in massive type IIA supergravity. The localization computations are performed in the non-renormalizable effective field theories obtained through relevant deformations of the UV superconformal field theories. We compare the $S^5$ free energy to a holographic computation of entanglement entropy in the $AdS_6$ duals and find perfect agreement. In particular, we reproduce the $N^{5/2}$ scaling of the $S^5$ free energy that was expected from supergravity.

Disk entanglement entropy for a Maxwell field

In three dimensions, the pure Maxwell theory with compact U(1) gauge group is dual to a free compact scalar, and flows from the Maxwell theory with non-compact gauge group in the ultraviolet to a non-compact free massless scalar theory in the infrared. We compute the vacuum disk entanglement entropy all along this flow, and show that the renormalized entropy F(r) decreases monotonically with the radius r as predicted by the F-theorem, interpolating between a logarithmic growth for small r (matching the behavior of the S^3 free energy) and a constant at large r (equal to the free energy of the conformal scalar). The calculation is carried out by the replica trick, employing the scalar formulation of the theory. The Renyi entropies for n>1 are given by a sum over winding sectors, leading to a Riemann-Siegel theta function. The extrapolation to n=1, to obtain the von Neumann entropy, is done by analytic continuation in the large- and small-r limits and by a numerical extrapolation method at intermediate values. We also compute the leading contribution to the renormalized entanglement entropy of the compact free scalar in higher dimensions. Finally, we point out some interesting features of the reduced density matrix for the compact scalar, and its relation to that for the non-compact theory.

Complex Chern-Simons from M5-branes on the Squashed Three-Sphere

We derive an equivalence between the (2,0) superconformal M5-brane field theory dimensionally reduced on a squashed three-sphere, and Chern-Simons theory with complex gauge group. In the reduction, the massless fermions obtain an action which is second order in derivatives and are reinterpreted as ghosts for gauge fixing the emergent non-compact gauge symmetry. A squashing parameter in the geometry controls the imaginary part of the complex Chern-Simons level.

Towards the F-Theorem: N=2 Field Theories on the Three-Sphere

For 3-dimensional field theories with {\cal N}=2 supersymmetry the Euclidean path integrals on the three-sphere can be calculated using the method of localization; they reduce to certain matrix integrals that depend on the R-charges of the matter fields. We solve a number of such large N matrix models and calculate the free energy F as a function of the trial R-charges consistent with the marginality of the superpotential. In all our {\cal N}=2 superconformal examples, the local maximization of F yields answers that scale as N^{3/2} and agree with the dual M-theory backgrounds AdS_4 x Y, where Y are 7-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein spaces. We also find in toric examples that local F-maximization is equivalent to the minimization of the volume of Y over the space of Sasakian metrics, a procedure also referred to as Z-minimization. Moreover, we find that the functions F and Z are related for any trial R-charges. In the models we study F is positive and decreases along RG flows. We therefore propose the "F-theorem" that we hope applies to all 3-d field theories: the finite part of the free energy on the three-sphere decreases along RG trajectories and is stationary at RG fixed points. We also show that in an infinite class of Chern-Simons-matter gauge theories where the Chern-Simons levels do not sum to zero, the free energy grows as N^{5/3} at large N. This non-trivial scaling matches that of the free energy of the gravity duals in type IIA string theory with Romans mass.

The Exact Superconformal R-Symmetry Extremizes Z

The three sphere partition function, Z, of three dimensional theories with four supercharges and an R-symmetry is computed using localization, resulting in a matrix integral over the Cartan of the gauge group. There is a family of couplings to the curved background, parameterized by a choice of R-charge, such that supersymmetry is preserved; Z is a function of those parameters. The magnitude of the result is shown to be extremized for the superconformal R-charge of the infrared conformal field theory, in the absence of mixing of the R-symmetry with accidental symmetries. This exactly determines the IR superconformal R-charge.

Bound state transformation walls

In four dimensional N=2 supergravity theories, BPS bound states near marginal stability are described by configurations of widely separated constituents with nearly parallel central charges. When the vacuum moduli can be dialed adiabatically until the central charges become anti -parallel, a paradox arises. We show that this paradox is always resolved by the existence of "bound state transformation walls" across which the nature of the bound state changes, although the index does not jump. We find that there are two distinct phenomena that can take place on these walls, which we call recombination and conjugation. The latter is associated to the presence of singularities at finite distance in moduli space. Consistency of conjugation and wall-crossing rules near these singularities leads to new constraints on the BPS spectrum. Singular loci supporting massless vector bosons are particularly subtle in this respect. We argue that the spectrum at such loci necessarily contains massless magnetic monopoles, and that bound states around them transform by intricate hybrids of conjugation and recombination.

Wall-crossing from supersymmetric galaxies

We give an elementary physical derivation of the Kontsevich-Soibelman wall crossing formula, valid for any theory with a 4d N=2 supergravity description. Our argument leads to a slight generalization of the formula, which relates monodromy to the BPS spectrum.

Wall Crossing of BPS States on the Conifold from Seiberg Duality and Pyramid Partitions

In this paper we study the relation between pyramid partitions with a general empty room configuration (ERC) and the BPS states of D-branes on the resolved conifold. We find that the generating function for pyramid partitions with a length n ERC is exactly the same as the D6/D2/D0 BPS partition function on the resolved conifold in particular Kaehler chambers. We define a new type of pyramid partition with a finite ERC that counts the BPS degeneracies in certain other chambers. The D6/D2/D0 partition functions in different chambers were obtained by applying the wall crossing formula. On the other hand, the pyramid partitions describe T^3 fixed points of the moduli space of a quiver quantum mechanics. This quiver arises after we apply Seiberg dualities to the D6/D2/D0 system on the conifold and choose a particular set of FI parameters. The arrow structure of the dual quiver is confirmed by computation of the Ext group between the sheaves. We show that the superpotential and the stability condition of the dual quiver with this choice of the FI parameters give rise to the rules specifying pyramid partitions with length n ERC.

Wall crossing in local Calabi Yau manifolds

We study the BPS states of a D6-brane wrapping the conifold and bound to collections of D2 and D0 branes. We find that in addition to the complexified Kahler parameter of the rigid sphere it is necessary to introduce an extra real parameter to describe BPS partition functions and marginal stability walls. The supergravity approach to BPS state-counting gives a simple derivation of results of Szendroi concerning Donaldson-Thomas theory on the noncommutative conifold. This example also illustrates some interesting limitations on the supergravity approach to BPS state-counting and wall-crossing.

Fragmenting D4 branes and coupled q-deformed Yang Mills

We compute the index of BPS states for two stacks of D4-branes wrapped on ample divisors and overlapping over a compact Riemann surface inside non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-fold. This index is given in terms of U(N) x U(M) q-deformed Yang Mills theory with bifundamental matter. From the factorization in the limit of large D4 charge, we argue that our result computes the jump in the index of BPS states across the wall of the marginal stability for the split flow of a D4 brane fragmenting into a pair of D4 branes.

Topological Quiver Matrix Models and Quantum Foam

We study the matrix models that describe the BPS bound states of branes arising from the quiver picture of the derived category. These theories have a topological partition function that localizes to the Euler character of the anti-ghost bundle over the classical BPS moduli space. We examine the effective internal geometry of D6/D2 bound states in the local vertex geometry, using BPS 0-brane probes. The Kahler blowups of the Calabi-Yau that we find utilizing these quiver theories are a realization of A-model quantum foam in the full IIA theory.
