Time-periodic non-radial solutions near monotone vortices in linearized 2D Euler

We study the linearized 2D Euler equations around radial vortex profiles. Previous works have shown that the strict monotonicity of the vorticity profile leads to axisymmetrization and inviscid damping of non-radial perturbations. Given any strictly decreasing radial vortex, we construct arbitrarily close (in low H\"{o}lder norms $C^\alpha$, with $0<\alpha < 1$) radial profiles that are merely non-increasing, for which non-radial, time-periodic solutions to the linearized equation exist. This shows that both axisymmetrization and inviscid damping are not robust under small, low-regularity perturbations of the background profile that violate strict monotonicity.

On the existence of solutions to generalized Navier--Stokes--Fourier system with dissipative heating

We consider a flow of non-Newtonian incompressible heat conducting fluids with dissipative heating. Such system can be obtained by scaling the classical Navier--Stokes--Fourier problem. As one possible singular limit may be obtained the so-called Oberbeck--Boussinesq system. However, this model is not suitable for studying the systems with high temperature gradient. These systems are described in much better way by completing the Oberbeck--Boussinesq system by an additional dissipative heating. The satisfactory existence result for such system was however not available. In this paper we show the large-data and the long-time existence of dissipative and suitable weak solution. This is the starting point for further analysis of the stability properties of such problems.

Time periodic solutions for the 2D Euler equation near Taylor-Couette flow

In this paper we consider the incompressible 2D Euler equation in an annular domain with non-penetration boundary condition. In this setting, we prove the existence of a family of non-trivially smooth time-periodic solutions at an arbitrarily small distance from the stationary Taylor-Couette flow in $H^s$, with $s<3/2$, at the vorticity level.

Traveling waves near Couette flow for the 2D Euler equation

In this paper we reveal the existence of a large family of new, nontrivial and smooth traveling waves for the 2D Euler equation at an arbitrarily small distance from the Couette flow in $H^s$, with $s<3/2$, at the level of the vorticity. The speed of these waves is of order 1 with respect to this distance. This result strongly contrasts with the setting of very high regularity in Gevrey spaces (see arXiv:1306.5028), where the problem exhibits an inviscid damping mechanism that leads to relaxation of perturbations back to nearby shear flows. It also complements the fact that there not exist nontrivial traveling waves in the $H^{\frac{3}{2}+}$ neighborhoods of Couette flow (see arXiv:1004.5149).

Global solutions to multi-dimensional topological Euler alignment systems

We present a systematic approach to regularity theory of the multi-dimensional Euler alignment systems with topological diffusion introduced in \cite{STtopo}. While these systems exhibit flocking behavior emerging from purely local communication, bearing direct relevance to empirical field studies, global and even local well-posedness has proved to be a major challenge in multi-dimensional settings due to the presence of topological effects. In this paper we reveal two important classes of global smooth solutions -- parallel shear flocks with incompressible velocity and stationary density profile, and nearly aligned flocks with close to constant velocity field but arbitrary density distribution. Existence of such classes is established via an efficient continuation criterion requiring control only on the Lipschitz norm of state quantities, which makes it accessible to the applications of fractional parabolic theory. The criterion presents a major improvement over the existing result of \cite{RS2020}, and is proved with the use of quartic paraproduct estimates.

Global existence and limiting behavior of unidirectional flocks for the fractional Euler Alignment system

In this note we continue our study of unidirectional solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems with strongly singular communication kernels $\phi(x):=|x|^{-(n+\alpha)}$ for $\alpha\in(0,2)$. Here, we consider the critical case $\alpha=1$ and establish a couple of global existence results of smooth solutions, together with a full description of their long time dynamics. The first one is obtained via Schauder-type estimates under a null initial entropy condition and the other is a small data result. In fact, using Duhamel's approach we get that any solution is almost Lipschitz-continuous in space. We extend the notion of weak solution for $\alpha\in[1,2)$ and prove the existence of global Leray-Hopf solutions. Furthermore, we give an anisotropic Onsager-type criteria for the validity of the natural energy law for weak solutions of the system. Finally, we provide a series of quantitative estimates that show how far the density of the limiting flock is from a uniform distribution depending solely on the size of the initial entropy.

Grassmannian reduction of Cucker-Smale systems and dynamical opinion games

In this note we study a new class of alignment models with self-propulsion and Rayleigh-type friction forces, which describes the collective behavior of agents with individual characteristic parameters. We describe the long time dynamics via a new method which allows to reduce analysis from the multidimensional system to a simpler family of two-dimensional systems parametrized by a proper Grassmannian. With this method we demonstrate exponential alignment for a large (and sharp) class of initial velocity configurations confined to a sector of opening less than $\pi$. In the case when characteristic parameters remain frozen, the system governs dynamics of opinions for a set of players with constant convictions. Viewed as a dynamical non-cooperative game, the system is shown to possess a unique stable Nash equilibrium, which represents a settlement of opinions most agreeable to all agents. Such an agreement is furthermore shown to be a global attractor for any set of initial opinions.

Geometric Structure of Mass Concentration Sets for Pressureless Euler Alignment Systems

We study the limiting dynamics of the Euler Alignment system with a smooth, heavy-tailed interaction kernel $\phi$ and unidirectional velocity $\mathbf{u} = (u, 0, \ldots, 0)$. We demonstrate a striking correspondence between the entropy function $e_0 = \partial_1 u_0 + \phi*\rho_0$ and the limiting 'concentration set', i.e., the support of the singular part of the limiting density measure. In a typical scenario, a flock experiences aggregation toward a union of $C^1$ hypersurfaces: the image of the zero set of $e_0$ under the limiting flow map. This correspondence also allows us to make statements about the fine properties associated to the limiting dynamics, including a sharp upper bound on the dimension of the concentration set, depending only on the smoothness of $e_0$. In order to facilitate and contextualize our analysis of the limiting density measure, we also include an expository discussion of the wellposedness, flocking, and stability of the Euler Alignment system, most of which is new.

Unidirectional flocks in hydrodynamic Euler Alignment system II: Singular models

In this note we continue our study of unidirectional solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems with strongly singular communication kernels $\phi(x):=|x|^{-(n+\alpha)}$ for $\alpha\in(0,2)$. The solutions describe unidirectional parallel motion of agents governing multi-dimensional collective behavior of flocks. Here, we consider the range $1<\alpha<2$ and establish the global regularity of smooth solutions, together with a full description of their long time dynamics. Specifically, we develop the flocking theory of these solutions and show long time convergence to traveling wave with rapidly aligned velocity field.

Existence and stability of unidirectional flocks in hydrodynamic Euler Alignment systems

In this note we reveal new classes of solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems governing collective behavior of flocks. The solutions describe unidirectional parallel motion of agents, and are globally well-posed in multi-dimensional settings subject to a threshold condition similar to the one dimensional case. We develop the flocking and stability theory of these solutions and show long time convergence to traveling wave with rapidly aligned velocity field. In the context of multi-scale models introduced in \cite{ST-multi} our solutions can be superimposed into Mikado formations -- clusters of unidirectional flocks pointing in various directions. Such formations exhibit multiscale alignment phenomena and resemble realistic behavior of interacting large flocks.

On the non-diffusive Magneto-Geostrophic equation

Motivated by an equation arising in magnetohydrodynamics, we address the well-posedness theroy for the non-diffusive magneto-geostrophic equation. Namely, an active scalar equation in which the divergence-free drift velocity is one derivative more singular that the active scalar. In \cite{Friedlander-Vicol_3}, the authors prove that the non-diffusive equation is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard in Sobolev spaces, but locally well posed in spaces of analytic functions. Here, we give an example of a steady state that is nonlinearly stable for periodic perturbations with initial data localized in frequency straight lines crossing the origin. For such well-prepared data, the local existence and uniqueness of solutions can be obtained in Sobolev spaces and the global existence holds under a size condition over the $H^{5/2^{+}}(\mathbb{T}^3)$ norm of the perturbation.

On the asymptotic stability of stratified solutions for the 2D Boussinesq equations with a velocity damping term

We consider the 2D Boussinesq equations with a velocity damping term in a strip $\mathbb{T}\times[-1,1]$, with impermeable walls. In this physical scenario, where the \textit{Boussinesq approximation} is accurate when density/temperature variations are small, our main result is the asymptotic stability for a specific type of perturbations of a stratified solution. To prove this result, we use a suitably weighted energy space combined with linear decay, Duhamel's formula and "bootstrap" arguments.

Global existence of quasi-stratified solutions for the confined IPM equation

In this paper, we consider a confined physical scenario to prove global existence of smooth solutions with bounded density and finite energy for the inviscid incompressible porous media (IPM) equation. The result is proved using the stability of stratified solutions, combined with an additional structure of our initial perturbation, which allows us to get rid of the boundary terms in the energy estimates.
