On the spectral theory of trees with finite cone type

We study basic spectral features of graph Laplacians associated with a class of rooted trees which contains all regular trees. Trees in this class can be generated by substitution processes. Their spectra are shown to be purely absolutely continuous and to consist of finitely many bands. The main result gives stability of absolutely continuous spectrum under sufficiently small radially label symmetric perturbations for non regular trees in this class. In sharp contrast, the absolutely continuous spectrum can be completely destroyed by arbitrary small radially label symmetric perturbations for regular trees in this class.

Intrinsic metrics for non-local symmetric Dirichlet forms and applications to spectral theory

We present a study of what may be called an intrinsic metric for a general regular Dirichlet form. For such forms we then prove a Rademacher type theorem. For strongly local forms we show existence of a maximal intrinsic metric (under a weak continuity condition) and for Dirichlet forms with an absolutely continuous jump kernel we characterize intrinsic metrics by bounds on certain integrals. We then turn to applications on spectral theory and provide for (measure perturbation of) general regular Dirichlet forms an Allegretto-Piepenbrinck type theorem, which is based on a ground state transform, and a Shnol type theorem. Our setting includes Laplacian on manifolds, on graphs and $α$-stable processes.

\textsc{MaGe} - a {\sc Geant4}-based Monte Carlo Application Framework for Low-background Germanium Experiments

We describe a physics simulation software framework, MAGE, that is based on the GEANT4 simulation toolkit. MAGE is used to simulate the response of ultra-low radioactive background radiation detectors to ionizing radiation, specifically the MAJORANA and GERDA neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments. MAJORANA and GERDA use high-purity germanium detectors to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge, and MAGE is jointly developed between these two collaborations. The MAGE framework contains the geometry models of common objects, prototypes, test stands, and the actual experiments. It also implements customized event generators, GEANT4 physics lists, and output formats. All of these features are available as class libraries that are typically compiled into a single executable. The user selects the particular experimental setup implementation at run-time via macros. The combination of all these common classes into one framework reduces duplication of efforts, eases comparison between simulated data and experiment, and simplifies the addition of new detectors to be simulated. This paper focuses on the software framework, custom event generators, and physics lists.

Compactness of Schrödinger semigroups

This paper is concerned with emptyness of the essential spectrum, or equivalently compactness of the semigroup, for perturbations of selfadjoint operators that are bounded below (on an L^2-space). For perturbations by a (nonnegative) potential we obtain a simple criterion for compactness of the semigroup in terms of relative compactness of the operators of multiplication with characteristic functions of sublevel sets. In the context of Dirichlet forms, we can even characterize compactness of the semigroup for measure perturbations. Here, certain 'averages' of the measure outside of compact sets play a role. As an application we obtain compactness of semigroups for Schrödinger operators with potentials whose sublevel sets are thin at infinity.

Delone measures of finite local complexity and applications to spectral theory of one-dimensional continuum models of quasicrystals

We study measures on the real line and present various versions of what it means for such a measure to take only finitely many values. We then study perturbations of the Laplacian by such measures. Using Kotani-Remling theory, we show that the resulting operators have empty absolutely continuous spectrum if the measures are not periodic. When combined with Gordon type arguments this allows us to prove purely singular continuous spectrum for some continuum models of quasicrystals.

Note on powers in three interval exchange transformations

We study repetitions in infinite words coding exchange of three intervals with permutation (3,2,1), called 3iet words. The language of such words is determined by two parameters $\varepsilon,\ell$. We show that finiteness of the index of 3iet words is equivalent to boundedness of the coefficients of the continued fraction of $\varepsilon$. In this case we also give an upper and lower estimate on the index of the corresponding 3iet word.

Pure Point spectrum for measure dynamical systems on locally compact Abelian groups

We show equivalence of pure point diffraction and pure point dynamical spectrum for measurable dynamical systems build from locally finite measures on locally compact Abelian groups. This generalizes all earlier results of this type. Our approach is based on a study of almost periodicity in a Hilbert space. It allows us to set up a perturbation theory for arbitrary equivariant measurable perturbations.

Continuity of the integrated density of states on random length metric graphs

We establish several properties of the integrated density of states for random quantum graphs: Under appropriate ergodicity and amenability assumptions, the integrated density of states can be defined using an exhaustion procedure by compact subgraphs. A trace per unit volume formula holds, similarly as in the Euclidean case. Our setting includes periodic graphs. For a model where the edge length are random and vary independently in a smooth way we prove a Wegner estimate and related regularity results for the integrated density of states. These results are illustrated for an example based on the Kagome lattice. In the periodic case we characterise all compactly supported eigenfunctions and calculate the position and size of discontinuities of the integrated density of states.

Extinctions and Correlations for Uniformly Discrete Point Processes with Pure Point Dynamical Spectra

The paper investigates how correlations can completely specify a uniformly discrete point process. The setting is that of uniformly discrete point sets in real space for which the corresponding dynamical hull is ergodic. The first result is that all of the essential physical information in such a system is derivable from its $n$-point correlations, $n= 2, 3, >...$. If the system is pure point diffractive an upper bound on the number of correlations required can be derived from the cycle structure of a graph formed from the dynamical and Bragg spectra. In particular, if the diffraction has no extinctions, then the 2 and 3 point correlations contain all the relevant information.

Hamiltonians on discrete structures: Jumps of the integrated density of states and uniform convergence

We study equivariant families of discrete Hamiltonians on amenable geometries and their integrated density of states (IDS). We prove that the eigenspace of a fixed energy is spanned by eigenfunctions with compact support. The size of a jump of the IDS is consequently given by the equivariant dimension of the subspace spanned by such eigenfunctions. From this we deduce uniform convergence (w.r.t. the spectral parameter) of the finite volume approximants of the IDS. Our framework includes quasiperiodic operators on Delone sets, periodic and random operators on quasi-transitive graphs, and operators on percolation graphs.

Continuity of eigenfunctions of uniquely ergodic dynamical systems and intensity of Bragg peaks

We study uniquely ergodic dynamical systems over locally compact, sigma-compact Abelian groups. We characterize uniform convergence in Wiener/Wintner type ergodic theorems in terms of continuity of the limit. Our results generalize and unify earlier results of Robinson and Assani respectively. We then turn to diffraction of quasicrystals and show how the Bragg peaks can be calculated via a Wiener/Wintner type result. Combining these results we prove a version of what is sometimes known as Bombieri/Taylor conjecture. Finally, we discuss various examples including deformed model sets, percolation models, random displacement models, and linearly repetitive systems.

Aperiodic order and pure point diffraction

We give a leisurely introduction into mathematical diffraction theory with a focus on pure point diffraction. In particular, we discuss various characterisations of pure point diffraction and common models arising from cut and project schemes. We finish with a list of open problems.

MaGe - a Geant4-based Monte Carlo framework for low-background experiments

A Monte Carlo framework, MaGe, has been developed based on the Geant4 simulation toolkit. Its purpose is to simulate physics processes in low-energy and low-background radiation detectors, specifically for the Majorana and Gerda $^{76}$Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments. This jointly-developed tool is also used to verify the simulation of physics processes relevant to other low-background experiments in Geant4. The MaGe framework contains simulations of prototype experiments and test stands, and is easily extended to incorporate new geometries and configurations while still using the same verified physics processes, tunings, and code framework. This reduces duplication of efforts and improves the robustness of and confidence in the simulation output.
