Coulomb gap, Coulomb blockade, and dynamic activation energy in frustrated single-electron arrays

We have used modern supercomputer facilities to carry out extensive numerical simulations of statistical properties of 1D and 2D arrays of single-electron islands with random background charges, in the limit of small island self-capacitance. In particular, the spectrum of single-electron addition energies shows a clear Coulomb gap that, in 2D arrays, obeys the Efros-Shklovskii theory modified for the specific electron-electron interaction law. The Coulomb blockade threshold voltage statistics for 1D arrays is very broad, with r.m.s. width $δV_t$ growing as $ \propto N^{1/2}$ with the array size $N$. On the contrary, in square 2D arrays of large size the distribution around $ \propto N$ becomes relatively narrow $(δV_t/< V_t> \propto 1/N)$, and the dc $I$-$V$ curves are virtually universal. At low voltages, the slope $G_0(T)$ of $I$-$V$ curves obeys the Arrhenius law. The corresponding activation energy $U_0$ grows only slowly with $N$ and is considerably lower than the formally calculated "lowest pass" energy $E_{max}$ of the potential profile, thus indicating the profile "softness".

Progress in Muon Cooling Research and Development

The MuCool R&D program is described. The aim of MuCool is to develop all key pieces of hardware required for ionization cooling of a muon beam. This effort will lead to a more detailed understanding of the construction and operating costs of such hardware, as well as to optimized designs that can be used to build a Neutrino Factory or Muon Collider. This work is being undertaken by a broad collaboration including physicists and engineers from many national laboratories and universities in the U.S. and abroad. The intended schedule of work will lead to ionization cooling being well enough established that a construction decision for a Neutrino Factory could be taken before the end of this decade based on a solid technical foundation.

Prospects for Charm CP Violation Studies in BTeV

The BTeV experiment at Fermilab could reconstruct >10^9 charm decays, three orders of magnitude beyond the largest extant sample. The experiment is likely to run during Tevatron Run II. It will have significant new-physics reach in the areas of charm CP violation, flavor-changing neutral-current and lepton-number-violating decays, and D0 anti-D0 mixing, and could observe direct CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed D decays if it occurs at the level predicted by the Standard Model.

The BTeV Vertex Trigger System

The BTeV trigger system will be very ambitious, reconstructing almost all tracks in real time at 15 million 2-TeV ${\bar p} p$ interactions per second. The goal is substantially-increased sensitivity to rare effects in heavy-quark physics over that of existing experiments. The evolution of our approach is briefly summarized.

Prospects for low-energy antiproton physics at Fermilab

Fermilab has long had the world's most intense antiproton source, but the opportunities for medium-energy antiproton physics have been limited, and those for low-energy antiproton physics nonexistent. The conclusion of E835 brings this era to an end. While the future of antiproton physics at Fermilab remains highly uncertain, developments are occurring that may lead to a low-energy program within the next several years, with the possibility of an improved medium-energy program thereafter. These issues were considered at the recent $\bar{p}2000$ Workshop at Illinois Institute of Technology. I summarize the current status of the Fermilab antiproton facility, review hyperon {\em CP} violation as an example of the physics that might be achievable, and discuss future possibilities.

Single-electron soliton avalanches in tunnel junction arrays

Numerical modeling of correlated single-electron tunneling in uniform 2D arrays of small conducting islands separated by tunnel junctions shows the possiblility of soliton-antisoliton avalanches. Though the time duration of any avalanche, and the total charge $ΔQ = ne$ transferred across the array during the avalanche, are always finite, in arrays with length $N$ larger than certain critical value $N_c$ and large width $M \gg f(N)$, the avalanche magnitude $n$ may be exponentially large, resulting in particular in a giant increase of shot noise. Thermal fluctuations and disorder gradually suppress the avalanche effect.

Muon Collider/Neutrino Factory: Status and Prospects

During the 1990s an international collaboration has been studying the possibility of constructing and operating a high-energy high-luminosity $μ^+μ^-$ collider. Such a machine could be the approach of choice to extend our discovery reach beyond that of the LHC. More recently, a growing collaboration is exploring the potential of a stored-muon-beam "neutrino factory" to elucidate neutrino oscillations. A neutrino factory could be an attractive stepping-stone to a muon collider. Its construction, possibly feasible within the coming decade, could have substantial impact on neutrino physics.

Should ${\bar p}p\to{\barΛ}Λ$ be revived?

The continued interest of CP violation in hyperon decay (as well as many other physics topics that could be addressed by such a facility) suggests that a dedicated $\bar p$ storage ring at Fermilab ought to be reconsidered. With recent and anticipated technical progress, sensitivity many orders of magnitude beyond that achieved in LEAR may be possible, including 10^{-5} sensitivity for the $Λ/{\barΛ}$ CP-asymmetry parameter $A_Λ$.

Experimental Prospects for CP Violation in Charm

Experimental sensitivity to CP violation in charm decay is beginning to approach the interesting regime ($\sim10^{-3}$) in which new physics may be manifest. In the early years of the 21st century, if the technical challenges can be met, the proposed BTeV experiment should have the best sensitivity for rare effects both in charm and in beauty.

Searching for CP Violation in Pion Decay

Surprisingly, until recently CP violation in pion decay was not ruled out experimentally even at the percent level. I have derived the first experimental limit, $-0.01<A_{CP}<0.02$, from old data on the anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$ of the muon. New data from the Brookhaven $g-2$ experiment might extend the search by a few orders of magnitude, but probably will not probe the theoretically-interesting sub-$10^{-7}$ regime.

BTeV/C0

The physics goals and techniques of the proposed BTeV experiment at the C0 Tevatron interaction area are summarized, with emphasis on aspects of the experiment that depend on near-beam issues. BTeV aims to carry out a comprehensive study of rare processes (especially CP violation) in charm and beauty decay starting in collider Run II. Vertex detectors will be deployed within a few mm of the beam. Early running may employ a wire target in the beam halo.

A Future Charm Facility

The "BTeV/C0" experiment at Fermilab could reconstruct >10^9 charm decays, four orders of magnitude beyond the largest extant sample. The experiment is likely to run during Tevatron Run II (ca. 2000--2005). In addition to "programmatic" charm physics such as spectroscopy, lifetimes, and QCD tests, it will have significant new-physics reach in the areas of CP violation, flavor-changing neutral-current and lepton-number-violating decays, and $D^0\bar{D^0}$ mixing, and could observe direct CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed D decays if it occurs at the level predicted by the Standard Model.

Charmonium Production in Fermilab E789

Using a sample of >10^5 J/psi to mu+mu- decays, Fermilab experiment 789 has studied production of J/psi and psi-prime in 800-GeV proton-nucleon collisions. Differential cross sections and nuclear dependences have been measured for charmonium as well as for charm and beauty production. While charm and beauty production are consistent with perturbative QCD calculations, charmonium cross sections exceed the predictions of the color-singlet model by large factors, suggesting that additional mechanisms (such as color-octet production) may play important roles. Nuclear dependences of production cross sections may offer a new tool for the detailed understanding of charmonium production.

Fixed-Target CP-Violation Experiments at Fermilab

Studies of CP violation, for 30 years focused primarily on the neutral K meson, are on the threshold of a new era as experiments approach Standard-Model sensitivities in decays of beauty, charm, and hyperons. The array of heavy-quark experiments approved and planned at Fermilab may lead to a significant breakthrough in the next five to ten years.
