Rigidity of maps between configuration spaces

Let $n\geq5$ and $m\geq3$. Let $\Phi\colon\mathrm{B}_n\to\mathrm{B}_m$ be a homomorphism of braid groups. We prove that if the image of $\Phi$ is irreducible and not cyclic, then $m=n$ and $\Phi$ agrees with an automorphism modulo the center $Z(\mathrm{B}_m)$. This resolves in the affirmative a conjecture of Chen, Kordek, and Margalit. It also provides a partial resolution to a problem on the K3 problem list. As a consequence, we prove that every holomorphic map $\mathrm{UConf}_n(\mathbb{C})\to\mathrm{UConf}_m(\mathbb{C})$ for $n\geq5$ and $m\geq3$ is affine equivalent to either a constant map or the identity map. This resolves a conjecture of Farb for $n\neq4$.

Abelian covers of surfaces and the homology of the Torelli group

We study the first homology group of the mapping class group and Torelli group with coefficients in the first rational homology group of the universal abelian cover of the surface. We prove two contrasting results: for surfaces with one boundary component these twisted homology groups are finite-dimensional, but for surfaces with one puncture they are infinite-dimensional. These results play an important role in a recent paper of the authors calculating the second rational homology group of the Torelli group.

Presentations of representations

We give a new technique for constructing presentations by generators and relations for representations of groups like $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ and $Sp_{2g}(\mathbb{Z})$. Our results play an important role in recent work of the authors calculating the second homology group of the Torelli group.

Automorphisms of the fine 1-curve graph

The fine 1-curve graph of a surface is a graph whose vertices are simple closed curves on the surface and whose edges connect vertices that intersect in at most one point. We show that the automorphism group of the fine 1-curve graph is naturally isomorphic to the homeomorphism group of a closed, orientable surface with genus at least one.

The second rational homology of the Torelli group is finitely generated

We prove that second rational homology of the Torelli group of an orientable closed surface of genus g is finite dimensional for g at least 51. This rules out the simplest obstruction to the Torelli group being finitely presented and provides a partial answer to a question of Bestvina.

All lines on a smooth cubic surface in terms of three skew lines

Jordan showed that the incidence variety of a smooth cubic surface containing 27 lines has solvable Galois group over the incidence variety of a smooth cubic surface containing 3 skew lines. As noted by Harris, it follows that for any smooth cubic surface, there exist formulas for all 27 lines in terms of any 3 skew lines. In response to a question of Farb, we compute these formulas explicitly. We also discuss how these formulas relate to Schläfli's count of lines on real smooth cubic surfaces.
