Experimental constraint on axion-like particle coupling over seven orders of magnitude in mass

We use our recent electric dipole moment (EDM) measurement data to constrain the possibility that the HfF$^+$ EDM oscillates in time due to interactions with candidate dark matter axion-like particles (ALPs). We employ a Bayesian analysis method which accounts for both the look-elsewhere effect and the uncertainties associated with stochastic density fluctuations in the ALP field. We find no evidence of an oscillating EDM over a range spanning from 27 nHz to 400 mHz, and we use this result to constrain the ALP-gluon coupling over the mass range $10^{-22}-10^{-15}$ eV. This is the first laboratory constraint on the ALP-gluon coupling in the $10^{-17}-10^{-15}$ eV range, and the first laboratory constraint to properly account for the stochastic nature of the ALP field.

Visible and Ultraviolet Laser Spectroscopy of ThF

The molecular ion ThF$^+$ is the species to be used in the next generation of search for the electron's Electric Dipole Moment (eEDM) at JILA. The measurement requires creating molecular ions in the eEDM sensitive state, the rovibronic ground state $^3Δ_1$, $v^+=0$, $J^+=1$. Survey spectroscopy of neutral ThF is required to identify an appropriate intermediate state for a Resonance Enhanced Multi-Photon Ionization (REMPI) scheme that will create ions in the required state. We perform broadband survey spectroscopy (from 13000 to 44000~cm$^{-1}$) of ThF using both Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and $1+1'$ REMPI spectroscopy. We observe and assign 345 previously unreported vibronic bands of ThF. We demonstrate 30\% efficiency in the production of ThF$^+$ ions in the eEDM sensitive state using the $Ω= 3/2$ [32.85] intermediate state. In addition, we propose a method to increase the aforementioned efficiency to $\sim$100\% by using vibrational autoionization via core-nonpenetrating Rydberg states, and discuss theoretical and experimental challenges. Finally, we also report 83 vibronic bands of an impurity species, ThO.

A precision measurement of the electron's electric dipole moment using trapped molecular ions

We describe the first precision measurement of the electron's electric dipole moment (eEDM, $d_e$) using trapped molecular ions, demonstrating the application of spin interrogation times over 700 ms to achieve high sensitivity and stringent rejection of systematic errors. Through electron spin resonance spectroscopy on $^{180}{\rm Hf}^{19}{\rm F}^{+}$ in its metastable $^{3}Δ_{1}$ electronic state, we obtain $d_e = (0.9 \pm 7.7_{\rm stat} \pm 1.7_{\rm syst}) \times 10^{-29}\,e\,{\rm cm}$, resulting in an upper bound of $|d_e| < 1.3 \times 10^{-28}\,e\,{\rm cm}$ (90% confidence). Our result provides independent confirmation of the current upper bound of $|d_e| < 9.3 \times 10^{-29}\,e\,{\rm cm}$ [J. Baron $\textit{et al.}$, Science $\textbf{343}$, 269 (2014)], and offers the potential to improve on this limit in the near future.

Broadband velocity modulation spectroscopy of ThF$^+$ for use in a measurement of the electron electric dipole moment

A number of extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics predict a permanent electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM) in the range of the current experimental limits. Trapped ThF$^+$ will be used in a forthcoming generation of the JILA eEDM experiment. Here, we present extensive survey spectroscopy of ThF$^+$ in the 700 - 1000 nm spectral region, with the 700 - 900 nm range fully covered using frequency comb velocity modulation spectroscopy. We have determined that the ThF$^+$ electronic ground state is $X$ $^3Δ_1$, which is the eEDM-sensitive state. In addition, we report high-precision rotational and vibrational constants for 14 ThF$^+$ electronic states, including excited states that can be used to transfer and readout population in the eEDM experiment.

Broadband velocity modulation spectroscopy of HfF^+: towards a measurement of the electron electric dipole moment

Precision spectroscopy of trapped HfF^+ will be used in a search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM). While this dipole moment has yet to be observed, various extensions to the standard model of particle physics (such as supersymmetry) predict values that are close to the current limit. We present extensive survey spectroscopy of 19 bands covering nearly 5000 cm^(-1) using both frequency-comb and single-frequency laser velocity-modulation spectroscopy. We obtain high-precision rovibrational constants for eight electronic states including those that will be necessary for state preparation and readout in an actual eEDM experiment.
