An ideal toy model for confining, walking and conformal gauge theories: the O(3) sigma model with theta-term

A toy model is proposed for four dimensional non-abelian gauge theories coupled to a large number of fermionic degrees of freedom. As the number of flavors is varied the gauge theory may be confining, walking or conformal. The toy model mimicking this feature is the two dimensional O(3) sigma model with a theta-term. For all theta the model is asymptotically free. For small theta the model is confining in the infra red, for theta = pi the model has a non-trivial infra red fixed point and consequently for theta slightly below pi the coupling walks. The first step in investigating the notoriously difficult systematic effects of the gauge theory in the toy model is to establish non-perturbatively that the theta parameter is actually a relevant coupling. This is done by showing that there exist quantities that are entirely given by the total topological charge and are well defined in the continuum limit and are non-zero, despite the fact that the topological susceptibility is divergent. More precisely it is established that the differences of connected correlation functions of the topological charge (the cumulants) are finite and non-zero and consequently there is only a single divergent parameter in Z(theta) but otherwise it is finite. This divergent constant can be removed by an appropriate counter term rendering the theory completely finite even at theta > 0.

Twelve fundamental and two sextet fermion flavors

We report extended simulation results and their new analysis in two important gauge theories with twelve fermion flavors in the fundamental SU(3) color representation and two fermions in the sextet representation. We probe the $N_f=12$ model with respect to the conformal window using mass deformed finite size scaling (FSS) theory driven by the fermion mass anomalous dimension. Our results at fixed gauge coupling show problems with the conformal scenario of the $N_f=12$ model. In the sextet model with two flavors, under the conformal hypothesis, we determine large values for the anomalous fermion mass dimension with $γ\geq 1$. Since our sextet analysis favors the chiral symmetry breaking hypothesis without conformality, the large exponent $γ$ could play an important role in understanding the composite Higgs mechanism. The new results discussed here include our extended data sets and exceed what was presented at the conference.

QCD thermodynamics with Wilson fermions

QCD is investigated at finite temperature using Wilson fermions in the fixed scale approach. A 2+1 flavor stout and clover improved action is used at four lattice spacings allowing for control over discretization errors. The light quark masses in this first study are fixed to heavier than physical values. The renormalized chiral condensate, quark number susceptibility and the Polyakov loop is measured and the results are compared with the staggered formulation in the fixed N_t approach. The Wilson results at the finest lattice spacing agree with the staggered results at the highest N_t.

Twelve massless flavors and three colors below the conformal window

We report new results for a frequently discussed gauge theory with twelve fermion flavors in the fundamental representation of the SU(3) color gauge group. The model, controversial with respect to its conformality, is important in non-perturbative studies searching for a viable composite Higgs mechanism Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). To resolve the controversy, we subject the model to opposite hypotheses inside and outside of the conformal window. In the first hypothesis we test chiral symmetry breaking ($χ{\rm SB}$) with its Goldstone spectrum, $F_π$, the $χ{\rm SB}$ condensate, and several composite hadron states as the fermion mass is varied in a limited range with our best effort to control finite volume effects and extrapolation to the massless chiral limit. Supporting results for $χ{\rm SB}$ from the running coupling based on the force between static sources and some preliminary evidence for the finite temperature transition are also presented. In the second test for the alternate hypothesis we probe conformal behavior driven by a single anomalous mass dimension under the assumption of unbroken chiral symmetry. Our results show a very low level of confidence in the conformal scenario. Staggered lattice fermions with stout-suppressed taste breaking are used throughout the simulations.

Chiral symmetry breaking in fundamental and sextet fermion representations of SU(3) color

We report new results for lattice gauge theories with twelve fermion flavors in the fundamental representation and two fermion flavors in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group. Both models are important in searching for a viable composite Higgs mechanism in the Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) paradigm. We subject both models to opposite hypotheses inside and outside of the conformal window. In the first hypothesis we test chiral symmetry breaking ($χ{\rm SB}$) with its Goldstone spectrum, $F_π$, the $χ{\rm SB}$ condensate, and several composite hadron states as the fermion mass is varied in a limited range with our best effort to control finite volume effects. Supporting results for $χ{\rm SB}$ from the running coupling based on the force between static sources is also presented. In the second test for the alternate hypothesis we probe conformal behavior driven by a single anomalous mass dimension under the assumption of unbroken chiral symmetry. Our results show very low level of confidence in the conformal scenario.

Calculating the running coupling in strong electroweak models

One possibility for Beyond Standard Model physics is a new strongly-interacting gauge theory. One way to determine if a non-abelian gauge theory is QCD-like or conformal is to measure the running of the renormalized gauge coupling. We define the renormalized coupling from Wilson loop ratios, and measure these ratios via lattice simulations. We test this method in SU(3) pure gauge theory and show some first results for simulations with dynamical fermions in the fundamental representation.

Chiral symmetry breaking in nearly conformal gauge theories

We present new results on chiral symmetry breaking in nearly conformal gauge theories with fermions in the fundamental representation of the SU(3) color gauge group. The number of fermion flavors is varied in an extended range below the conformal window with chiral symmetry breaking ($χ{\rm SB}$) for all flavors between $N_f=4$ and $N_f=12$. To identify $χ{\rm SB}$ we apply several methods which include, within the framework of chiral perturbation theory, the analysis of the Goldstone spectrum in the p-regime and the spectrum of the fermion Dirac operator with eigenvalue distributions of random matrix theory in the $\eps$-regime. Chiral condensate enhancement is observed with increasing $N_f$ when the electroweak symmetry breaking scale $F$ is held fixed in technicolor language. Important finite-volume consistency checks from the theoretical understanding of the $SU(N_f)$ rotator spectrum of the $δ$-regime are discussed. We also consider these gauge theories at $N_f=16$ inside the conformal window. The importance of understanding finite volume, zero momentum gauge field dynamics inside the conformal window is pointed out. Staggered lattice fermions with supressed taste breaking are used throughout the simulations.

Chiral properties of SU(3) sextet fermions

SU(3) gauge theory with overlap fermions in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) and fundamental representations is considered. A priori it is not known what the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking is in a higher dimensional representation although the general expectation is that if two representations are both complex, the breaking pattern will be the same. This expectation is verified for the sextet at N_f = 0 in several exact zero mode sectors. It is shown that if the volume is large enough the same random matrix ensemble describes both the sextet and fundamental Dirac eigenvalues. The number of zero modes for the sextet increases approximately 5-fold relative to the fundamental in accordance with the index theorem for small lattice spacing but zero modes which do not correspond to integer topological charge do exist at larger lattice spacings. The zero mode number dependence of the random matrix model predictions correctly match the simulations in each sector and each representation.

Topology and higher dimensional representations

SU(3) gauge theory in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) and fundamental representations is considered in symmetric and periodic boxes. Using the overlap formulation in the quenched approximation it is shown that the topological charge obtained from the sextet index theorem always leads to an integer value and agrees with the charge obtained from the fundamental index theorem in the continuum. At larger lattice spacing configurations exist with fractional topological charge if the sextet index is used but these are lattice artifacts and the probability of finding such a configuration rapidly approaches zero. By considering the decomposition of the sextet representation with respect to an SU(2) subgroup it is shown that the SU(2) adjoint index theorem leads to integer charge as well. We conclude that the non-zero value of the bilinear gaugino condensate in N=1 super-Yang-Mills theory cannot be attributed to configurations with fractional topological charge once periodic boundary conditions are imposed.

Nearly conformal gauge theories in finite volume

We report new results on nearly conformal gauge theories with fermions in the fundamental representation of the SU(3) color gauge group as the number of fermion flavors is varied in the Nf = 4-16 range. To unambiguously identify the chirally broken phase below the conformal window we apply a comprehensive lattice tool set in finite volumes which includes the test of Goldstone pion dynamics, the spectrum of the fermion Dirac operator, and eigenvalue distributions of random matrix theory. We also discuss the theory inside the conformal window and present our first results on the running of the renormalized gauge coupling and the renormalization group beta function. The importance of understanding finite volume zero momentum gauge field dynamics inside the conformal window is illustrated. Staggered lattice fermions are used throughout the calculations.

Shear viscosity of pure Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling

We calculate the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory below the critical temperature using the strong coupling expansion. The result for the eta/s ratio for temperatures around the phase transition is 0.22 for N = 2 and 0.028N^2 for N > 2. The results are consistent with the conjectured 1/4pi lower bound inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Nearly conformal electroweak sector with chiral fermions

SU(3) gauge theory with dynamical overlap fermions in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) representation is considered. This model may be a viable model of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector along the lines of the walking technicolor paradigm. The number of fermion species is chosen such that the theory is expected to be below the conformal window. We will discuss how the epsilon-regime and random matrix theory can be used to test whether at any given set of parameters (N_c, N_f, representation) the theory is in the conformal phase or indeed just below it. Quenched Monte Carlo results are included in the fundamental representation and also preliminary dynamical ones in the 2-index symmetric representation.

Probing technicolor theories with staggered fermions

One exciting possibility of new physics beyond the Standard Model is that the fundamental Higgs sector is replaced by a strongly-interacting gauge theory, known as technicolor. A viable theory must break chiral symmetry dynamically, like in QCD, to generate Goldstone bosons which become the longitudinal components of the W and Z. By measuring the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator, one can determine if chiral symmetry is in fact spontaneously broken. We simulate SU(3) gauge theory with n_s=2 and 3 staggered flavors in the fundamental representation, corresponding to N_f=8 and 12 flavors in the continuum limit. Although our first findings show that both theories are consistent with dynamically broken chiral symmetry and QCD-like behavior, flavor breaking effects in the spectrum may require further clarifications before final conclusions can be drawn. We also compare various improved staggered actions, to suppress this potentially large flavor breaking.

New Higgs physics from the lattice

We report the first results from our comprehensive lattice tool set to explore non-perturbative aspects of Higgs physics in the Standard Model. We demonstrate in Higgs-Yukawa models that Higgs mass lower bounds and upper bounds can be determined in lattice simulations when triviality requires the necessity of a finite cutoff to maintain non-zero interactions. The vacuum instability problem is investigated and the lattice approach is compared with the traditional renormalization group procedure which sets similar goals to correlate lower and upper Higgs mass bounds with the scale of new physics. A novel feature of our lattice simulations is the use of Ginsparg-Wilson fermions to represent the effects of Top quark loops in Higgs dynamics. The need for chiral lattice fermions is discussed and the approach is extended to full Top-Higgs-QCD dynamics. We also report results from our large $N_F$ analysis of Top-Higgs Yukawa models to gain analytic insight and to verify our new lattice tool set which is deployed in the simulations. The role of non-perturbative lattice studies to investigate heavy Higgs particle scenarios is illustrated in extensions of the Standard Model.

Lattice QCD as a video game

The speed, bandwidth and cost characteristics of today's PC graphics cards make them an attractive target as general purpose computational platforms. High performance can be achieved also for lattice simulations but the actual implementation can be cumbersome. This paper outlines the architecture and programming model of modern graphics cards for the lattice practitioner with the goal of exploiting these chips for Monte Carlo simulations. Sample code is also given.

M2-branes stretching between M5-branes

A generalization of Nahm's equation has been recently conjectured by Basu and Harvey to be the BPS condition describing the bound state of a stack of M2-branes ending on an M5-brane. In this note exact solutions are presented for the proposed BPS equation - which is from the point of view of the M2-brane world-volume dynamics - with boundary conditions appropriate for M2-branes stretching between two M5-branes. Unfortunately, since the action for multiple M5-branes or for multiple coincident M2-branes is not known, one can only resort to consistency checks of the proposal instead of a direct comparison of the M2 and M5 world-volume point of views. The existence of our solutions should be seen as such a consistency check of the conjecture, and also as a source of new insight into the dynamics of multiple M2 and M5-branes.

Multi-calorons and their moduli

Pure Yang-Mills instantons are considered on S^1 x R^3 -- so-called calorons. The holonomy -- or Polyakov loop around the thermal S^1 at spatial infinity -- is assumed to be a non-centre element of the gauge group SU(n) as most appropriate for QCD applications in the confined phase. It is shown that a charge k caloron can be seen as a collection of nk massive magnetic monopoles each carrying fractional topological charge. This interpretation offers a physically appealing way of introducing monopole degrees of freedom into pure gluodynamics: as constituents of finite temperature instantons. New and exact solutions are found along with the fermionic zero-modes of the Dirac operator. The properties of the zero-modes are analysed as well as the hyperkahler and twistor geometry of the caloron moduli space. Lattice gauge theoretic applications are also mentioned.

Higher charge calorons with non-trivial holonomy

The full ADHM-Nahm formalism is employed to find exact higher charge caloron solutions with non-trivial holonomy, extended beyond the axially symmetric solutions found earlier. Particularly interesting is the case where the constituent monopoles, that make up these solutions, are not necessarily well-separated. This is worked out in detail for charge 2. We resolve the structure of the extended core, which was previously localized only through the singularity structure of the zero-mode density in the far field limit. We also show that this singularity structure agrees exactly with the abelian charge distribution as seen through the abelian component of the gauge field. As a by-product zero-mode densities for charge 2 magnetic monopoles are found.
