Local Quantum Cooling for Large Fermi Systems with Pairing

We present a framework for local quantum cooling that can be efficiently applied to large-scale Fermi systems. The method introduces local Hermitian operators as a cooling potential while strictly preserving the unitarity of time evolution. Our formulation scales favorably with system size and can be seamlessly integrated into time-dependent density-functional theory frameworks. We demonstrate that energy cooling arises from the damping of particle currents and pairing-field fluctuations. Furthermore, we develop a variant of the scheme that allows the particle number to vary in time, enabling controlled density scans. The method is generic and versatile, as illustrated by applications to spin-imbalanced unitary Fermi gases and to nuclear matter in the neutron-star crust. The framework can be naturally extended to include stochastic noise, providing a foundation for studying thermalization in strongly interacting Fermi superfluids.

Dynamical scheme for computing the mass parameter of a system in a medium

We present a new method for extracting a mass parameter using time-dependent density functional theory for an arbitrary physical system, provided the adiabatic limit is achievable. This approach works for collective variables also in the presence of a medium, in particular for the nuclei interacting with a neutron background. We apply the method to extract mass parameters of impurities in the neutron star crust, like their inertial masses and quadrupole mass parameters. The extracted mass parameters at various depths of the inner crust are compared with other methods, including the hydrodynamic approach. The presented method opens avenues for the construction of an effective model of neutron star crust grounded in microscopic calculations.

Stability conditions for bound states in antiprotonic atoms

We study the stability of bound antiprotons in close proximity to the atomic nucleus. Using experimental data from X-ray spectroscopy measurements of antiprotonic atom transitions, we tune a minimal theoretical framework and estimate parameter ranges where the strong or electromagnetic decay channels govern the stability of the deepest bound states. In this way, we present an overview of the dominant decay mechanism of antiprotonic orbits for a given principle quantum number, to assist future spectroscopic experiments on antiprotonic atoms.

Quantum vortices in fermionic superfluids: from ultracold atoms to neutron stars

Superfluid dilute neutron matter and ultracold gas, close to the unitary regime, exhibit several similarities. Therefore, to a certain extent, fermionic ultracold gases may serve as emulators of dilute neutron matter, which forms the inner crust of neutron stars and is not directly accessed experimentally. Quantum vortices are one of the most significant properties of neutron superfluid, essential for comprehending neutron stars' dynamics. The structure and dynamics of quantum vortices as a function of pairing correlations' strength are being investigated experimentally and theoretically in ultracold gases. Certain aspects of these studies are relevant to neutron stars. We provide an overview of the characteristics of quantum vortices in s-wave-type fermionic and electrically neutral superfluids. The main focus is on the dynamics of fermionic vortices and their intrinsic structure.

The spin-flip-induced quadrupole resonance in odd-$A$ exotic atoms

We examine the possible existence of quadrupole resonances in exotic atoms containing odd-$A$ nuclei. We find that the spin-flip of the de-exciting exotic particle can induce a resonance, altering the orbital angular momentum of the nucleus by one quanta. This process results in an excited nucleus with a suppression in x-ray photon emissions during the exotic atom cascade. We provide specific cases of antiprotonic atoms of stable elements where this resonance effect is expected to occur. The study of this phenomena may provide insight into the strong interaction of deeply bound antiprotonic states in the proximity of the unpaired nucleon, and serve as a tool for probing short-lived excited nuclear states.

Unconventional pairing in few-fermion systems at finite temperature

Attractively interacting two-component mixtures of fermionic particles confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap are investigated. Properties of balanced and imbalanced systems are systematically explored with the exact diagonalization approach, focusing on the finite-temperature effects. Using single- and two-particle density distributions, specific non-classical pairing correlations are analyzed in terms of the noise correlations -- quantity directly accessible in state-of-the-art experiments with ultra-cold atoms. It is shown that along with increasing temperature, any imbalanced system hosting Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairs crossovers to a standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer one characterized by zero net momentum of resulting pairs. By performing calculations for systems with different imbalances, the approximate boundary between the two phases on a phase diagram is determined.

Properties of a quantum vortex in neutron matter

We have studied systematically microscopic properties of a quantum vortex in neutron matter at finite temperatures and densities corresponding to different layers of the inner crust of a neutron star. To this end and in preparation of future simulations of the vortex dynamics, we have carried out fully self-consistent 3D Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations, using one of the latest nuclear energy-density functionals from the Brussels-Montreal family, which has been developed specifically for applications to neutron superfluidity in neutron-star crusts. By analyzing the flow around the vortex, we have determined the effective radius relevant for the vortex filament model. We have also calculated the specific heat in the presence of the quantum vortex and have shown that it is substantially larger than for a uniform system at low temperatures. The low temperature limit of the specific heat has been identified as being determined by Andreev states inside the vortex core. We have shown that the specific heat in this limit does not scale linearly with temperature. The typical energy scale associated with Andreev states is defined by the minigap, which we have extracted for various neutron-matter densities. Our results suggest that vortices may be spin-polarized in the crust of magnetars. Finally, we have obtained a lower bound for the specific heat of a collection of vortices with given surface density, taking into account both the contributions from the vortex core states and from the hydrodynamic flow.

Signatures of unconventional pairing in spin-imbalanced one-dimensional few-fermion systems

A system of a few attractively interacting fermionic $^6$Li atoms in one-dimensional harmonic confinement is investigated. Non-trivial inter-particle correlations induced by interactions in a particle-imbalanced system are studied in the framework of the noise correlation. In this way, it is shown that evident signatures of strongly correlated fermionic pairs in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state are present in the system and they can be detected by measurements directly accessible within state-of-the-art techniques. The results convincingly show that the exotic pairing mechanism is a very universal phenomenon and can be captured in systems being essentially non-uniform and far from the many-body limit.

Geometry-induced entanglement in a mass-imbalanced few-fermion system

Many-body systems undergoing quantum phase transitions reveal substantial growth of non-classical correlations between different parties of the system. This behavior is manifested by characteristic divergences of the von Neumann entropy. Here we show, that very similar features may be observed in one-dimensional systems of a few strongly interacting atoms when the structural transitions between different spatial orderings are driven by a varying shape of an external potential. When the appropriate adaptation of the finite-size scaling approach is performed in the vicinity of the transition point, few-fermion systems display a characteristic power-law invariance of divergent quantities.

Intercomponent correlations in attractive one-dimensional mass-imbalanced few-body mixtures

Ground-state properties of a few attractively interacting ultra-cold atoms of different mass confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap are studied in terms of the correlation noise. Depending on the mass ratio between the components' atoms, the inter-particle correlations change their properties significantly from a strong pair-like correlation to an almost uncorrelated phase. This change is accompanied by the undergoing change in the structure of the many-body ground state. A crucial role of the quantum statistics is emphasized by comparing properties of the Fermi-Fermi mixture with a corresponding Fermi-Bose system.

Global optimization for quantum dynamics of few-fermion systems

Quantum state preparation is vital to quantum computation and quantum information processing tasks. In adiabatic state preparation, the target state is theoretically obtained with nearly perfect fidelity if the control parameter is tuned slowly enough. As this, however, leads to slow dynamics, it is often desirable to be able to do processes faster. In this work, we employ two global optimization methods to estimate the quantum speed limit for few-fermion systems confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. Such systems can be produced experimentally in a well controlled manner. We determine the optimized control fields and achieve a reduction in the ramping time of more than a factor of four compared to linear ramping. We also investigate how robust the fidelity is to small variations of the control fields away from the optimized shapes.

Experimentally accessible invariants encoded in interparticle correlations of harmonically trapped ultra-cold few-fermion mixtures

System of a two-flavor mixture of ultra-cold fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is studied in the frame of the center of mass. We present a numerical method of obtaining energetic spectra in this frame for an arbitrary mass ratio of fermionic species. We identify a specific invariant encoded in many-body correlations which enable one to determine an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian and to label excitations of the center of mass. The tool presented may be particularly useful in experimental analysis of the interparticle interactions which do not affect the center of mass excitations in a harmonic potential.

Four fermions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap: Accuracy of a variational-ansatz approach

Detailed analysis of the system of four interacting ultra-cold fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is performed. The analysis is done in the framework of a simple variational ansatz for the many-body ground state and its predictions are confronted with the results of numerically exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian. Short discussion on the role of the quantum statistics, i.e. Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi mixtures is also presented. It is concluded that the variational ansatz, although seemed to be oversimplified, gives surprisingly good predictions of many different quantities for mixtures of equal as well as different mass systems. The result may have some experimental importance since it gives quite simple and validated method for describing experimental outputs.

Few strongly interacting ultracold fermions in one-dimensional traps of different shapes

The ground-state properties of a few spin-1/2 fermions with different masses and interacting via short-range contact forces are studied within an exact diagonalization approach. It is shown that, depending on the shape of the external confinement, different scenarios of the spatial separation between components manifested by specific shapes of the density profiles can be obtained in the strong interaction limit. We find that the ground-state of the system undergoes a specific transition between orderings when the confinement is changed adiabatically from a uniform box to a harmonic oscillator shape. We study the properties of this transition in the framework of the finite-size scaling method adopted to few-body systems.

Two-flavor mixture of a few fermions of different mass in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

A system of two species of fermions of different mass confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is studied with an exact diagonalization approach. It is shown independently on the number of particles that a mass difference between fermionic species induces a separation in the lighter flavor system. The mechanism of emerging of separated phases is explained phenomenologically and confirmed with the help of a direct inspection of the ground-state of the system. Finally, it is shown that the separation driven by a mass difference, in contrast to the separation induced by a difference of populations, is robust to the interactions with thermal environment.

Multimode Raman light-atom interface in warm atomic ensemble as multiple three-mode quantum operations

We analyze the properties of a Raman quantum light-atom interface in long atomic ensemble and its applications as a quantum memory or two-mode squeezed state generator. We consider the weak-coupling regime and include both Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering and the effects of Doppler broadening in buffer gas assuming frequent velocity-averaging collisions. We find the Green functions describing multimode transformation from input to output fields of photons and atomic excitations. Proper mode basis is found via singular value decomposition for short interaction times. It reveals that triples of modes are coupled by a transformation equivalent to a combination of two beamsplitters and a two-mode squeezing operation. We analyze the possible transformations on an example of warm rubidium-87 vapor. The model we present bridges the gap between the Stokes only and anti-Stokes only interactions providing simple, universal description in a temporally and longitudinally multimode situation. Our results also provide an easy way to find an evolution of the states in a Schrödinger picture thus facilitating understanding and design.

Spontaneous and parametric processes in warm rubidium vapours

Warm rubidium vapours are known to be a versatile medium for a variety of experiments in atomic physics and quantum optics. Here we present experimental results on producing the frequency converted light for quantum applications based on spontaneous and stimulated processes in rubidium vapours. In particular, we study the efficiency of spontaneously initiated stimulated Raman scattering in the Λ-level configuration and conditions of generating the coherent blue light assisted by multi-photon transitions in the diamond-level configuration. Our results will be helpful in search for new types of interfaces between light and atomic quantum memories.
