Euler flows and singular geometric structures

Tichler proved that a manifold admitting a smooth closed one-form fibers over a circle. More generally a manifold admitting $k$ independent closed one-forms fibers over a torus $T^k$. In this article we explain a version of this construction for manifolds with boundary using the techniques of $b$-calculus. We explore new applications of this idea to Fluid Dynamics and more concretely in the study of stationary solutions of the Euler equations. In the study of Euler flows on manifolds, two dichotomic situations appear. For the first one, in which the Bernoulli function is not constant, we provide a new proof of Arnold's structure theorem and describe $b$-symplectic structures on some of the singular sets of the Bernoulli function. When the Bernoulli function is constant, a correspondence between contact structures with singularities and what we call $b$-Beltrami fields is established, thus mimicking the classical correspondence between Beltrami fields and contact structures. These results provide a new technique to analyze the geometry of steady fluid flows on non-compact manifolds with cylindrical ends.

Energy minimizing Beltrami fields on Sasakian 3-manifolds

We study on which compact Sasakian 3-manifolds the Reeb field, which is a Beltrami field with eigenvalue 2, is an energy minimizer in its adjoint orbit under the action of volume preserving diffeomorphisms. This minimization property for Beltrami fields is relevant because of its connections with the phenomenon of magnetic relaxation and the hydrodynamic stability of steady Euler flows. We characterize the Sasakian manifolds where the Reeb field is a minimizer in terms of the first positive eigenvalue of the curl operator and show that for $a>a_0$ (a constant that depends on the Sasakian structure) the Reeb field of the $\mathcal{D}$-homothetic deformation of the manifold with constant $a$ (which is still Sasakian) is an unstable critical point of the energy, and hence not even a local minimizer. We also provide some examples of Sasakian manifolds where the Reeb field is a minimizer, highlighting the case of the weighted 3-spheres, on which another minimization problem (for the quartic Skyrme-Faddeev energy) is shown to admit exact solutions.

A basis of Casimirs in 3D magnetohydrodynamics

We prove that any regular Casimir in 3D magnetohydrodynamics is a function of the magnetic helicity and cross-helicity. In other words, these two helicities are the only independent regular integral invariants of the coadjoint action of the MHD group $\text{SDiff}(M)\ltimes\mathfrak X^*(M)$, which is the semidirect product of the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms and the dual space of its Lie algebra.

Approximation theorems for parabolic equations and movement of local hot spots

We prove a global approximation theorem for a general parabolic operator $L$, which asserts that if $v$ satisfies the equation $Lv=0$ in a spacetime region $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying certain necessary topological condition, then it can be approximated in a Hölder norm by a global solution $u$ to the equation. If $Ω$ is compact and $L$ is the usual heat operator, one can instead approximate the local solution $v$ by the unique solution that falls off at infinity to the Cauchy problem with a suitably chosen smooth, compactly supported initial datum. These results are next applied to prove the existence of global solutions to the equation $Lu=0$ with a local hot spot that moves along a prescribed curve for all time, up to a uniformly small error. Global solutions that exhibit isothermic hypersurfaces of prescribed topologies for all times and applications to the heat equation on the flat torus are discussed too.

High-energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the torus and the sphere with nodal sets of complicated topology

Let $Σ$ be an oriented compact hypersurface in the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ or in the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^n$, $n\geq 3$. In the case of the torus, $Σ$ is further assumed to be contained in a contractible subset of $\mathbb{T}^n$. We show that for any sufficiently large enough odd integer $N$ there exists an eigenfunctions $ψ$ of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$ satisfying $Δψ=-λψ$ (with $λ=N(N+n-1)$ or $N^2$ on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$, respectively), and with a connected component of the nodal set of $ψ$ given by~$Σ$, up to an ambient diffeomorphism.

Stationary phase methods and the splitting of separatrices

Using stationary phase methods, we provide an explicit formula for the Melnikov function of the one and a half degrees of freedom system given by a Hamiltonian system subject to a rapidly oscillating perturbation. Remarkably, the Melnikov function turns out to be computable without an explicit knowledge of the separatrix and in the case of non-analytic systems. This is related to a priori stable systems coupled with low regularity perturbations. It also applies to perturbations controlled by wave-type equations, so in particular we also illustrate this result with the motion of charged particles in a rapidly oscillating electromagnetic field. Quasiperiodic perturbations are discussed too.

Minimal surfaces with micro-oscillations

We show that there are minimal graphs in R^{n+1} whose intersection with the portion of the horizontal hyperplane contained in the unit ball has any prescribed geometry, up to a small deformation. The proof hinges on the construction of minimal graphs that are almost flat but have small oscillations whose geometry we can control.

When do knots in light stay knotted?

An initially knotted light field will stay knotted if it satisfies a set of nonlinear, geometric constraints, i.e. the null conditions, for all space-time. However, the question of when an initially null light field stays null has remained challenging to answer. By establishing a mapping between Maxwell's equations and transport along the flow of a pressureless Euler fluid, we show that an initially analytic null light field stays null if and only if the flow of the initial Poynting field is shear-free, giving a design rule for the construction of persistently knotted light fields. Furthermore we outline methods for constructing initially knotted null light fields, and initially null, shear-free light fields, and give sufficient conditions for the magnetic (or electric) field lines of a null light field to lie tangent to surfaces. Our results pave the way for the design of persistently knotted light fields and the study of their field line structure.

Solutions to the overdetermined boundary problem for semilinear equations with position-dependent nonlinearities

We show that a wide range of overdetermined boundary problems for semilinear equations with position-dependent nonlinearities admits nontrivial solutions. The result holds true both on the Euclidean space and on compact Riemannian manifolds. As a byproduct of the proofs we also obtain some rigidity, or partial symmetry, results for solutions to overdetermined problems on Riemannian manifolds of nonconstant curvature.

The Biot-Savart operator of a bounded domain

We construct the analog of the Biot-Savart integral for bounded domains. Specifically, we show that the velocity field of an incompressible fluid with tangency boundary conditions on a bounded domain can be written in terms of its vorticity using an integral kernel $K_Ω(x,y)$ that has an inverse-square singularity on the diagonal.

Dislocations of arbitrary topology in Coulomb eigenfunctions

For any finite link $L$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ we prove the existence of a high-energy complex-valued eigenfunction of the hydrogen atom such that its nodal set contains a union of connected components diffeomorphic to $L$. This problem goes back to Berry, who constructed such eigenfunctions in the case where $L$ is the trefoil knot or the Hopf link and asked the question about the general result.

Vortex reconnection in the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

We prove that the vortex structures of solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations can change their topology without any loss of regularity. More precisely, we construct smooth high-frequency solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations where vortex lines and vortex tubes of arbitrarily complicated topologies are created and destroyed in arbitrarily small times. This instance of vortex reconnection is structurally stable and in perfect agreement with the existing computer simulations and experiments. We also provide a (non-structurally stable) scenario where the destruction of vortex structures is instantaneous.

Helicity is the only integral invariant of volume-preserving transformations

We prove that any regular integral invariant of volume-preserving transformations is equivalent to the helicity. Specifically, given a functional $\mathcal I$ defined on exact divergence-free vector fields of class $C^1$ on a compact 3-manifold that is associated with a well-behaved integral kernel, we prove that $\mathcal I$ is invariant under arbitrary volume-preserving diffeomorphisms if and only if it is a function of the helicity.

A problem of Ulam about magnetic fields generated by knotted wires

In the context of magnetic fields generated by wires, we study the connection between the topology of the wire and the topology of the magnetic lines. We show that a generic knotted wire has a magnetic line of the same knot type, but that given any pair of knots there is a wire isotopic to the first knot having a magnetic line isotopic to the second. These questions can be traced back to Ulam in 1935.

Realization problems for limit cycles of planar polynomial vector fields

We show that for any finite configuration of closed curves $Γ\subset \mathbb{R}^2$, one can construct an explicit planar polynomial vector field that realizes $Γ$, up to homeomorphism, as the set of its limit cycles with prescribed periods, multiplicities and stabilities. The only obstruction given on this data is the obvious compatibility relation between the stabilities and the parity of the multiplicities. The constructed vector fields are Darboux integrable and admit a polynomial inverse integrating factor.

Arnold diffusion of charged particles in ABC magnetic fields

We prove the existence of diffusing solutions in the motion of a charged particle in the presence of an ABC magnetic field. The equations of motion are modeled by a 3DOF Hamiltonian system depending on two parameters. For small values of these parameters, we obtain a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold and we apply the so-called geometric methods for a priori unstable systems developed by A. Delshams, R. de la Llave, and T.M. Seara. We characterize explicitly sufficient conditions for the existence of a transition chain of invariant tori having heteroclinic connections, thus obtaining global instability (Arnold diffusion). We also check the obtained conditions in a computer assisted proof. ABC magnetic fields are the simplest force-free type solutions of the magnetohydrodynamics equations with periodic boundary conditions, so our results are of potential interest in the study of the motion of plasma charged particles in a tokamak.

Bounded solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation with level sets of any compact topology

We make use of the flexibility of infinite-index solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation to show that, given any compact hypersurface $Σ$ of R^d, with $d\geq 4$, there is a bounded entire solution of the Allen-Cahn equation on R^d whose zero level set has a connected component diffeomorphic (and arbitrarily close) to a rescaling of $Σ$. More generally, we prove the existence of solutions with a finite number of compact connected components of prescribed topology in their zero level sets.

Knotted structures in high-energy Beltrami fields on the torus and the sphere

Let S be a finite union of (pairwise disjoint but possibly knotted and linked) closed curves and tubes in the round sphere S^3 or in the flat torus T^3. In the case of the torus, S is further assumed to be contained in a contractible subset of T^3. In this paper we show that for any sufficiently large odd integer λthere exists a Beltrami field on S^3 or T^3 satisfying curl u = λu and with a collection of vortex lines and vortex tubes given by S, up to an ambient diffeomorphism.
