Broken Metre: Attacking Resource Metering in EVM

Blockchain systems, such as Ethereum, use an approach called "metering" to assign a cost to smart contract execution, an approach which is designed to incentivise miners to operate the network and protect it against DoS attacks. In the past, the imperfections of Ethereum metering allowed several DoS attacks which were countered through modification of the metering mechanism. This paper presents a new DoS attack on Ethereum which systematically exploits its metering mechanism. We first replay and analyse several months of transactions, during which we discover a number of discrepancies in the metering model, such as significant inconsistencies in the pricing of the instructions. We further demonstrate that there is very little correlation between the execution cost and the utilised resources, such as CPU and memory. Based on these observations, we present a new type of DoS attack we call Resource Exhaustion Attack, which uses these imperfections to generate low-throughput contracts. To do this, we design a genetic algorithm that generates contracts with a throughput on average 200 times slower than typical contracts. We then show that all major Ethereum client implementations are vulnerable and, if running on commodity hardware, would be unable to stay in sync with the network when under attack. We argue that such an attack could be financially attractive not only for Ethereum competitors and speculators, but also for Ethereum miners. Finally, we discuss short-term and potential long-term fixes against such attacks. Our attack has been responsibly disclosed to the Ethereum Foundation and awarded a bug bounty reward of 5,000 USD.

Reconfigurable integrated waveguide meshes for photonic signal processing and emerging applications

We review the recent advances reported in the field of integrated photonic waveguide meshes, both from the theoretical as well as from the experimental point of view. We show how these devices can be programmed to implement both traditional signal processing structures, such as finite and infinite impulse response filters, delay lines, beamforming networks as well as more advanced linear matrix optics functionalities. Experimental results reported both in Silicon and Silicon Nitride material platforms will be presented. We will also discuss the main programming algorithms to implement these structures and discuss their applications either as standalone systems or as part of more elaborated subsystems in microwave photonics, quantum information and machine learning

Scalable Analysis for Arbitrary Photonic Integrated Waveguide Meshes

The advances in fabrication processes in different material platforms employed in integrated optics are opening the path towards the implementation of circuits with increasing degree of complexity. In addition to the more conventional Application Specific Photonic Circuit (ASPIC) paradigm the Programmable Multifunctional Nanophotonics (PMN) approach is a transversal concept inspired by similar approaches, which are already employed in other technology fields. For instance, in electronics Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices enable a much more flexible universal operation as compared to Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs).In photonics, the (PMN) concept is enabled by two dimensional (2D) waveguide meshes for which, the number of possible input and output ports quickly builds up and furthermore, internal signal flow paths make the computation of transfer functions an intractable problem. Here we report a scalable method based on mathematical induction that allows one to obtain the scattering matrix of any 2D integrated photonic waveguide mesh circuit composed of an arbitrary number of cells and which is easily programmable. To our knowledge this is the first report of the kind and our results open the path to unblock this important design bottleneck.

A high-brightness source of polarization-entangled photons optimized for applications in free space

We present a simple but highly efficient source of polarization-entangled photons based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in bulk periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystals (PPKTP) pumped by a 405 nm laser diode. Utilizing one of the highest available nonlinear coefficients in a non-degenerate, collinear type-0 phase-matching configuration, we generate polarization entanglement via the crossed-crystal scheme and detect 0.64 million photon pair events/s/mW, while maintaining an overlap fidelity with the ideal Bell state of 0.98 at a pump power of 0.025 mW.
