Topological interfaces between universes and generalized families of 2d QFTs

Two-dimensional quantum field theories with topological point operators decompose into universes. Just as fusion categories have played an important role in understanding non-invertible symmetries, multi-fusion categories play an analogous role for the symmetries of such decomposing theories. We describe a finite symmetry as a multi-fusion category together with its action functor, which keeps track of trivially acting symmetries and of the topological interfaces between universes. Relative to a chosen symmetry, we classify pairs of universes by the topological interfaces it contains, which reflect the structure of the multi-fusion category: universes in different indecomposable summands are joined by no interface (Type~III), while within a summand they are related by invertible (Type~I) or only non-invertible (Type~II) interfaces. For orbifolds with a trivially acting abelian normal subgroup, we derive the full inherited symmetry, which characterizes the operators between universes found case by case by Robbins, Sharpe and Vandermeulen and yields pairs of Types~I and~II but never of Type~III. We construct Type~III pairs instead from extensions of $2$-group type and from renormalization group flows out of a common ultraviolet theory. Finally, we propose a correspondence with the generalized families of quantum field theories of Brennan and Intriligator, in which equivariant families correspond to Type~I pairs and categorical ones to Type~II pairs whose gauging preserves the symmetry, family anomalies appear as universes carrying different symmetry-protected topological phases, and Type~III pairs can realize families over a discrete parameter. An appendix by Xingyang Yu works out the higher-charge Schwinger model as a Lagrangian example.

Six and seven dimensional extrema of Non-SUSY heterotic theory with non-maximal enhancements

We propose a construction of non-supersymmetric heterotic theories on $T^n$ for $n=1,2,3,4$ which lead to extrema of the one-loop effective potential. In contrast to other approaches, we do not impose maximal gauge enhancement, instead relying on Weyl symmetries of the right-moving part of the momentum lattice to ensure that we get an extremum. The classification depends on finding all lattices within a given genus using Kneser's method. We find several thousand extrema, most of which have non-maximal rank gauge enhancements. Several hundred of our extrema are tachyon-free, and several dozen are also not knife edges. There may be further equivalences among these points, but we find at least 2, 11, and 38 distinct tachyon-free non-knife-edge points for $T^2$, $T^3$, and $T^4$, respectively. In addition, we build on our previous work to study the perturbative stability of $AdS_{3}\times S^{3}\times T^{4}$ backgrounds by checking for Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound violations at the tachyon-free non-knife-edge extrema that we found. The lowest eigenvalues of the Hessian at all such extrema that have a positive one loop potential show violations of the BF bound and satisfy the refined de Sitter conjecture.

Boundaries of the compact free boson through edge modes and boundary SymTFT

We study boundary conditions of the compact free boson theory by coupling the bulk scalar to one-dimensional topological edge modes. We show that a single compact edge mode realizes the Dirichlet family, while a two field system realizes the Neumann family; more general compact edge theories can describe superpositions of boundary conditions and reproduce the expected boundary operator spectra. We then study this system in the framework of boundary SymTFT. We show that the edge mode theories of Dirichlet and Neumann boundaries are encoded in the degrees of freedom localized on the corners and the choice of polarization on the topological face of the boundary SymTFT. We further show that the T-duality defect exchanges the data associated with the Dirichlet and Neumann configurations. Finally, we explore extensions involving non-compact edge modes and multiple bulk fields, obtaining continuous boundary spectra in the first case and mixed boundary conditions in the second.

Notes on (-2)-form symmetries

We study $(-2)$-form symmetries of a $d$-dimensional quantum field theory, via a $(-1)$-form symmetry of its $(d+1)$-dimensional Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT), realized by a non-genuine codimension-one defect in the SymTFT bulk attached to a spacetime-filling topological operator. Unlike a $(-1)$-form symmetry of a $d$-dimensional theory, which merely shifts a parameter of the absolute theory, a $(-2)$-form symmetry modifies the SymTFT action, and thereby relates theories whose ordinary global symmetries differ by anomaly data or by the associator data of a non-invertible symmetry. We illustrate the construction in two-dimensional toy models, three-dimensional ABJM-type theories, four-dimensional generalized Yang--Mills theory, and in a fusion-categorical example relating the non-invertible symmetries $\operatorname{Rep}(D_4)$ and $\operatorname{Rep}(Q_8)$. We then develop a club-sandwich realization, in which a quarter-gauging operation interfaces between IR phases of distinct RG flows of a common UV theory, and an alternative realization via nested discrete gauging. Finally, we present a holographic, top-down realization in which the type IIA Romans mass plays the role of a $(-2)$-form background for a three-dimensional Chern--Simons-matter theory, with shifts of the Romans mass realizing shifts of the boundary anomaly coefficients. We also discuss related constructions for coupled bulk--boundary systems.

SymTFT actions, Condensable algebras and Categorical anomaly resolutions

We investigate symmetry topological field theories (SymTFTs) of non-abelian and non-invertible symmetries and the different Lagrangian algebras associated with a given Drinfeld center. For several examples we analyze the condensable algebras of the Drinfeld center to identify the intrinsically gapless symmetry protected topological (igSPT) phases. In previous work, the relation between igSPT phases and resolving anomalies by embedding an anomalous symmetry inside a larger fusion category was demonstrated. Here we present more examples of this mechanism that involve both group-like and categorical symmetries.

Non-supersymmetric heterotic strings on $AdS_{4}\times S^{3}\times S^{3}$

We analyze the stability properties of a family of anti-de Sitter flux compactifications of the tachyon-free non-supersymmetric heterotic string in ten dimensions. In contrast with simpler such solutions, the solutions include two independent unbounded fluxes, leading to richer instability phenomena. In particular, when the two fluxes are sufficiently close in magnitude, the perturbative spectrum develops tachyonic modes, which can be projected out by an orbifold action. When the fluxes are far apart, tachyonic modes are absent, and the geometry displays inverse scale separation, where a factor of the internal manifold becomes parametrically larger than the anti-de Sitter factor. Still, non-perturbative instabilities in the form of brane nucleation are always available decay channels, and tend to drive the two fluxes closer together, eventually triggering the tachyonic instability when present.

Constraining boundary conditions in non-rational CFTs

We revisit the question of conformal boundary conditions in the compact free boson CFT in two dimensions. Besides the well-known Neumann and Dirichlet cases, there is an additional proposed one-parameter family of boundary states when the radius is an irrational multiple of the self-dual radius. These additional states have a continuous open string spectrum, and we give an explicit formula for the density of states. We also discuss several pathologies of these states, including the possible violation of the cluster condition, and that they have a divergent g-function.

O(16)$\times$O(16) heterotic theory on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$

In this paper, we study non-supersymmetric $AdS_{3}\times S^{3}$ vacuua of $O(16)\times O(16)$ heterotic theory on a string scale $T^{4}$ background, which are parameterized by a pair of flux integers. Adding the one-loop scalar potential to the effective theory contributes positively to the cosmological constant, but we find that there is no uplift to de Sitter for any values of the fluxes. We study the fluctuations around these vacua and show that all scalar and tensor modes from the six-dimensional effective theory lie above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. The moduli coming from the torus compactification will also be above the bound, at least for a large range of fluxes.

(-1)-Form Symmetries and Anomaly Shifting from SymTFT

We investigate (-1)-form symmetries using the framework of symmetry topological field theories. Previous studies of (-1)-form symmetries have primarily focused on SymTFTs with topological point operators. Here we examine SymTFTs devoid of point operators, constructed to realize zero-form symmetries of some physical theory. In this context we identify codimension-one defects within the bulk of SymTFT constructed via higher gauging which can be interpreted as the generators of the (-1)-form symmetry of the absolute theory. In addition, we present examples where (-1)-form symmetries exhibit the novel ability to shift the 't Hooft anomalies of the theory.

Decomposition and (Non-Invertible) (-1)-Form Symmetries from the Symmetry Topological Field Theory

We investigate the interplay between (-1)-form symmetries and their quantum-dual (d-1)-form counterparts within the framework of Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs). In this framework the phenomenon of decomposition -- a d-dimensional quantum field theory with (d-1)-form symmetry being the disjoint union of other theories (or ''universes'') -- arises naturally from manipulations of topological boundary conditions of the SymTFT. We corroborate our findings with various examples, including a generalization of ''instanton-restricted'' 4d Yang-Mills theories with no sum over instanton sectors. Furthermore, we construct a 3d SymTFT with a non-invertible (-1)-form symmetry. The absolute 2d quantum field theory includes a 0-form global symmetry that depends on a parameter whose value gets shifted by the action of the (-1)-form symmetry, and we show that the non-invertibility of the latter is needed to encode this modification of the 0-form symmetry.

Notes on gauging noninvertible symmetries, part 2: higher multiplicity cases

In this paper we discuss gauging noninvertible zero-form symmetries in two dimensions, extending our previous work. Specifically, in this work we discuss more general gauged noninvertible symmetries in which the noninvertible symmetry is not multiplicity free, and discuss the case of Rep$(A_4)$ in detail. We realize Rep$(A_4)$ gaugings for the $c = 1$ CFT at the exceptional point in the moduli space and find new self-duality under gauging a certain non-group algebra object, leading to a larger noninvertible symmetry Rep$(SL(2, Z_3))$. We also discuss more general examples of decomposition in two-dimensional gauge theories with trivially-acting gauged noninvertible symmetries.

The Fusion Categorical Diagonal

We define a Frobenius algebra over fusion categories of the form Rep$(G)\boxtimes$Rep$(G)$ which generalizes the diagonal subgroup of $G\times G$. This allows us to extend field theoretical constructions which depend on the existence of a diagonal subgroup to non-invertible symmetries. We give explicit calculations for theories with Rep$(S_3)\boxtimes$Rep$(S_3)$ symmetry, applying the results to gauging topological quantum field theories which carry this non-invertible symmetry. Along the way, we also discuss how Morita equivalence is implemented for algebras in symmetry categories.

Characters and relations among SW(3/2,2) algebras

The SW(3/2,2) current algebras come in two discrete series indexed by central charge, with the chiral algebra of a supersymmetric sigma model on a Spin}(7) manifold as a special case. The unitary representations of these algebras were classified by Gepner and Noyvert, and we use their results to perform an analysis of null descendants and compute the characters for every representation. We obtain threshold relations between the characters of discrete representations and those with continuous conformal weights. Modular transformations are discussed, and we show that the continuous characters can be written as bilinear combinations of characters for consecutive minimal models.

Decomposition, Trivially-Acting Symmetries, and Topological Operators

Trivially-acting symmetries in two-dimensional conformal field theory include twist fields of dimension zero which are local topological operators. We investigate the consequences of regarding these operators as part of the global symmetry of the theory. That is, we regard such a symmetry as a mix of topological defect lines (TDLs) and topological point operators (TPOs). TDLs related by a trivially-acting symmetry can join at a TPO to form non-trivial two-way junctions. Upon gauging, the local operators at those junctions can become vacua in a disjoint union of theories. Examining the behavior of the TPOs under gauging therefore allows us to refine decomposition by tracking the trivially-acting symmetries of each universe. Mixed anomalies between the TDLs and TPOs provide discrete torsion-like phases for the partition functions of these orbifolds, modifying the resulting decomposition. This framework also readily allows for the consideration of trivially-acting non-invertible symmetries.

Non-Supersymmetric AdS from String Theory

We construct non-supersymmetric AdS3 solutions of the O(16)xO(16) heterotic string. Most of the backgrounds have a classical worldsheet definition but are quantum string vacua in the sense that string loop corrections change the curvature of spacetime. At one-loop, the change in the cosmological constant is positive but never sufficient to uplift to de Sitter space. By computing the spectrum of spacetime scalars, we show that there are no tachyons below the BF bound. We also show that there is a solution with no spacetime NS-NS flux. This background has no classical string limit. Surprisingly, there appears to be parametric control over these constructions, which provide a framework for exploring quantum gravity and holography without supersymmetry.

A generalization of decomposition in orbifolds

This paper describes a generalization of decomposition in orbifolds. In general terms, decomposition states that two-dimensional orbifolds and gauge theories whose gauge groups have trivially-acting subgroups decompose into disjoint unions of theories. However, decomposition can be, at least naively, broken in orbifolds if the orbifold has discrete torsion in the trivially-acting subgroup. (Formally, this breaks finite global one-form symmetries.) Nevertheless, even in such cases, one still sees rudiments of decomposition. In this paper, we generalize decomposition in orbifolds to include such examples of discrete torsion, which we check in numerous examples. Our analysis includes as special cases (and in one sense generalizes) quantum symmetries of abelian orbifolds.

Anomalies, Extensions and Orbifolds

We investigate gauge anomalies in the context of orbifold conformal field theories. Such anomalies manifest as failures of modular invariance in the constituents of the orbifold partition function. We review how this irregularity is classified by cohomology and how extending the orbifold group can remove it. Working with such extensions requires an understanding of the consistent ways in which extending groups can act on the twisted states of the original symmetry, which leads us to a discrete-torsion like choice that exists in orbifolds with trivially-acting subgroups. We review a general method for constructing such extensions and investigate its application to orbifolds. Through numerous explicit examples we test the conjecture that consistent extensions should be equivalent to (in general multiple copies of) orbifolds by non-anomalous subgroups.

Modular Orbits at Higher Genus

We extend the modular orbits method of constructing a two-dimensional orbifold conformal field theory to higher genus Riemann surfaces. We find that partition functions on surfaces of arbitrary genus can be constructed by a straightforward generalization of the rules that one would apply to the torus. We demonstrate how one can use these higher genus objects to compute correlation functions and OPE coefficients in the underlying theory. In the case of orbifolds of free bosonic theories by subgroups of continuous symmetries, we can give the explicit results of our procedure for symmetric and asymmetric orbifolds by cyclic groups.
