Skyrmions as quasiparticles: free energy and entropy

The free energy and the entropy of magnetic skyrmions with respect to the collinear state are calculated for a (Pt$_{0.95}$Ir$_{0.05}$)/Fe bilayer on Pd(111) via atomistic spin model simulations. The simulations are carried out starting from very low temperatures where the skyrmion number is conserved up to the range where skyrmions are constantly created and destroyed by thermal fluctuations, highlighting their quasiparticle nature. The higher entropy of the skyrmions at low temperature leads to a reduced free energy, such that the skyrmions become energetically preferred over the collinear state due to entropic stabilization as predicted by linear spin-wave theory. Going beyond the linear spin-wave approximation, a sign change is shown to occur in the free energy as well as the entropy at elevated temperature.

udkm1Dsim -- A Python toolbox for simulating 1D ultrafast dynamics in condensed matter

The udkm1Dsim toolbox is a collection of Python classes and routines to simulate the thermal, structural, and magnetic dynamics after laser excitation as well as the according X-ray scattering response in one-dimensional sample structures. The toolbox provides the capabilities to define arbitrary layered structures on the atomic level including a rich database of element-specific physical properties. The excitation of dynamics is represented by an $N$-temperature-model which is commonly applied in ultrafast physics. Structural dynamics due to thermal stresses are calculated by a linear-chain model of masses and springs. The implementation of specific magnetic dynamics can be easily accomplished by the user employing a generalized magnetization interface class. The resulting X-ray diffraction response is computed by kinematical or dynamical X-ray theory which can also include polarization-dependent magnetic scattering. The udkm1Dsim toolbox is highly modular and allows for injecting user-defined inputs at any step within the simulation procedure.

Does VO$_2$ Host a Transient Monoclinic Metallic Phase?

Ultrafast phase transitions induced by femtosecond light pulses present a new opportunity for manipulating the properties of materials. Understanding how these transient states are different from, or similar to, their thermal counterparts is key to determining how materials can exhibit properties that are not found in equilibrium. In this paper, we reexamine the case of the light-induced insulator-metal phase transition in the prototypical, strongly correlated material VO$_2$, for which a nonthermal Mott-Hubbard transition has been claimed. Here, we show that heat, even on the ultrafast timescale, plays a key role in the phase transition. When heating is properly accounted for, we find a single phase-transition threshold corresponding to the thermodynamic structural insulator-metal phase transition, and we find no evidence of a hidden transient Mott-Hubbard nonthermal phase. The interplay between the initial thermal state and the ultrafast transition may have implications for other transient states of matter.

Distinct Ultrafast Electronic and Magnetic Response in M-edge Magnetic Circular Dichroism

Experimental investigations of ultrafast magnetization dynamics increasingly employ resonant magnetic spectroscopy in the ultraviolet spectral range. Besides allowing to disentangle the element-specific transient response of functional magnetic systems, these techniques also promise to access attosecond to few-femtosecond dynamics of spin excitations. Here, we report on a systematic study of transient magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) on the transition metals Fe, Co and Ni as well as on a FeNi and GdFe alloy and reveal a delayed onset between the electronic and magnetic response. Supported by \textit{ab-initio} calculations, we attribute our observation to a transient energy shift of the absorption and MCD spectra at the corresponding elemental resonances due to non-equilibrium changes of electron occupations.

NTMpy: An open source package for solving coupled parabolic differential equations in the framework of the three-temperature model

The NTMpy code package allows for simulating the one-dimensional thermal response of multilayer samples after optical excitation, as in a typical pump-probe experiment. Several Python routines are combined and optimized to solve coupled heat diffusion equations in one dimension, on arbitrary piecewise homogeneous material stacks, in the framework of the so-called three-temperature model. The energy source deposited in the material is modelled as a light pulse of arbitrary cross-section and temporal profile. A transfer matrix method enables the calculation of realistic light absorption in presence of scattering interfaces as in multilayer samples. The open source code is fully object-oriented to enable a user-friendly and intuitive interface for adjusting the physically relevant input parameters. Here, we describe the mathematical background of the code, we lay out the workflow, and we validate the functionality of our package by comparing it to commercial software, as well as to experimental transient reflectivity data recorded in a pump-probe experiment with femtosecond light pulses.

Ultrafast and Energy-Efficient Quenching of Spin Order: Antiferromagnetism Beats Ferromagnetism

By comparing femtosecond laser pulse induced ferro- and antiferromagnetic dynamics in one and the same material - metallic dysprosium - we show both to behave fundamentally different. Antiferromagnetic order is considerably faster and much more efficiently manipulated by optical excitation than its ferromagnetic counterpart. We assign the fast and extremely efficient process in the antiferromagnet to an interatomic transfer of angular momentum within the spin system. Our findings do not only reveal this angular momentum transfer channel effective in antiferromagnets and other magnetic structures with non-parallel spin alignment, they also point out a possible route towards energy-efficient spin manipulation for magnetic devices.

Direct time domain sampling of sub-THz coherent acoustic phonon spectra in SrTiO$_3$ using ultrafast X-ray diffraction

We synthesize sub-THz longitudinal quasi-monochromatic acoustic phonons in a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal using a SrRuO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice as an optical-acoustic transducer. The generated acoustic phonon spectrum is determined using ultrafast X-ray diffraction. The analysis of the generated phonon spectrum in the time domain reveals a k-vector dependent phonon lifetime. It is observed that even at sub-THz frequencies the phonon lifetime agrees with the 1/$ω^2$ power law known from Akhiezer's model for hyper sound attenuation. The observed shift of the synthesized spectrum to the higher $q$ is discussed in the framework of non-linear effects appearing due to the high amplitude of the synthesized phonons.

Ultrafast x-ray diffraction studies of photoexcited coherent phonons in SrRuO$_3$ thin films

We present ultrafast x-ray diffraction experiments on thin films of metallic SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) after their excitation with ultrashort intense laser pulses. Depending on the layer thickness, the data exhibit a transient splitting of the (002) SRO Bragg peak evidencing the generation and propagation of sharp acoustic strain waves. These distinct structural dynamics are due to the exceptionally fast electron-phonon relaxation that gives rise to a quasi-instantaneous thermal stress in SRO. The interpretation is corroborated by numerical simulations which show excellent agreement with the experimental findings. Despite the qualitatively different lattice dynamics for different SRO layer thicknesses, we identify a universal evolution of the transient average layer strain. The inferred discrepancy of the thermal stress profile from the excitation profile may hint toward a temperature-dependent effective Grüneisen parameter of SRO.
