Existence of C^{K}-invariant foliations for Lorenz type maps

In this paper under similar conditions to that Shaskov and Shil'nikov [1994] we show that a C^{k+1} Lorenz-type map T has a C^{k} foliation which is invariant under T. This allows us to associate T to a C^{k} one-dimensional transformation.

Rigidity for piecewise smooth homeomorphisms on the circle

We find conditions for two piecewise C^{2+ν} homeomorphisms f and g of the circle to be C^1 conjugate. Besides the restrictions on the combinatorics of the maps (we assume that the maps have bounded combinatorics), and necessary conditions on the one-side derivatives of points where f and g are not differentiable, we also assume zero mean nonlinearity for f and g.

Renormalization for piecewise smooth homeomorphisms on the circle

In this work we study the renormalization operator acting on piecewise smooth homeomorphisms on the circle, that turns out to be essentially the study of Rauzy-Veech renormalizations of generalized interval exchanges maps with genus one. In particular we show that renormalizations of such maps with zero mean nonlinearity and satisfying certain smoothness and combinatorial assumptions converges to the set of piecewise affine interval exchange maps.

Ergodic Transport Theory and Piecewise Analytic Subactions for Analytic Dynamics

We consider a piecewise analytic real expanding map $f: [0,1]\to [0,1]$ of degree $d$ which preserves orientation, and a real analytic positive potential $g: [0,1] \to \mathbb{R}$. We assume the map and the potential have a complex analytic extension to a neighborhood of the interval in the complex plane. We also assume $\log g$ is well defined for this extension. It is known in Complex Dynamics that under the above hypothesis, for the given potential $β\,\log g$, where $β$ is a real constant, there exists a real analytic eigenfunction $ϕ_β$ defined on $[0,1]$ (with a complex analytic extension) for the Ruelle operator of $β\,\log g$. Under some assumptions we show that $\frac{1}β\, \log ϕ_β$ converges and is a piecewise analytic calibrated subaction. Our theory can be applied when $\log g(x)=-\log f'(x)$. In that case we relate the involution kernel to the so called scaling function.

Metric stability for random walks (with applications in renormalization theory)

Consider deterministic random walks F: I x Z -> I x Z, defined by F(x,n)=(f(x), K(x)+n), where f is an expanding Markov map on the interval I and K: I->Z. We study the universality (stability) of ergodic (for instance, recurrence and transience), geometric and multifractal properties in the class of perturbations of the type G(x,n)=(f_n(x), L(x,n)+n) which are topologically conjugate with F and f_n are expanding maps exponentially close to f when |n| goes to infinity. We give applications of these results in the study of the regularity of conjugacies between (generalized) infinitely renormalizable maps of the interval and the existence of wild attractors for one-dimensional maps.

On infinitely cohomologous to zero observables

We show that for a large class of piecewise expanding maps T, the bounded p-variation observables u_0 that admits an infinite sequence of bounded p-variation observables u_i satisfying u_i(x)= u_{i+1}(Tx) -u_{i+1}(x) are constant. The method of the proof consists in to find a suitable Hilbert basis for L^2(hm), where hm is the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability of T. In terms of this basis, the action of the Perron-Frobenious and the Koopan operator on L^2(hm) can be easily understood. This result generalizes earlier results by Bamon, Kiwi, Rivera-Letelier and Urzua in the case T(x)= n x mod 1, n in N-{0,1} and Lipchitizian observables u_0.

Piecewise Analytic Subactions for Analytic Dynamics

We consider a piecewise analytic expanding map f: [0,1]-> [0,1] of degree d which preserves orientation, and an analytic positive potential g: [0,1] -> R. We address the analysis of the following problem: for a given analytic potential beta log g, where beta is a real constant, it is well known that there exists a real analytic (with a complex analytic extension to a small complex neighborhood of [0,1]) eigenfunction phi_beta for the Ruelle operator. One can ask: what happen with the function phi_beta, when beta goes to infinity. The domain of analyticity can change with beta. The correct question should be: is 1/ beta log phi_beta analytic in the limit, when beta goes to infinity ? Under a uniqueness assumption, this limit, when beta goes to infinity, is in fact a calibrated subaction V (see bellow definition). We show here that under certain conditions and for a certain class of generic potentials this continuous function is piecewise analytic (but not analytic). In a few examples one can get that the subaction is analytic (we need at least to assume that the maximizing probability has support in a unique fixed point).

Renormalization for critical orders close to 2N

We study the dynamics of the renormalization operator acting on the space of pairs (v,t), where v is a diffeomorphism and t belongs to [0,1], interpreted as unimodal maps x-->v(q_t(x)), where q_t(x)=-2t|x|^a+2t-1. We prove the so called complex bounds for sufficiently renormalizable pairs with bounded combinatorics. This allows us to show that if the critical exponent a is close to an even number then the renormalization operator has a unique fixed point. Furthermore this fixed point is hyperbolic and its codimension one stable manifold contains all infinitely renormalizable pairs.

Smooth deformations of piecewise expanding unimodal maps

In the space of C^k piecewise expanding unimodal maps, k>=1, we characterize the C^1 smooth families of maps where the topological dynamics does not change (the "smooth deformations") as the families tangent to a continuous distribution of codimension-one subspaces (the "horizontal" directions) in that space. Furthermore such codimension-one subspaces are defined as the kernels of an explicit class of linear functionals. As a consequence we show the existence of C^{k-1+Lip} deformations tangent to every given C^k horizontal direction, for k>=2.

Alternative proofs of linear response for piecewise expanding unimodal maps

We give two new proofs that the SRB measure of a C^2 path f_t of unimodal piecewise expanding C^3 maps is differentiable at 0 if f_t is tangent to the topological class of f_0. The arguments are more conceptual than the one in our previous paper, but require proving Holder continuity of the infinitesimal conjugacy (a new result, of independent interest) and using spaces of bounded p-variation. The first new proof gives differentiability of higher order if f_t is smooth enough and stays in the topological class of f_0 and if the observable smooth enough (a new result). In addition, this proof does not require any information on the decomposition of the SRB measure into regular and singular terms, making it potentially amenable to extensions to higher dimensions. The second new proof allows us to recover the linear response formula (i.e., the formula for the derivative at 0) obtained in our previous paper and gives additional information on this formula.

On the hyperbolicity of the Feigenbaum fixed point

We show the hyperbolicity of the Feigenbaum fixed point using the inflexibility of the Feigenbaum tower, the Mane-Sad-Sullivan $λ$-Lemma and the existence of parabolic domains (petals) for semi-attractive fixed points.

Infinitesimal contraction of the Feigenbaum renormalization operator in the horizontal direction

In this short note, we give a sketch of a new proof of the exponential contraction of the Feigenbaum renormalization operator in the hybrid class of the Feigenbaum fixed point. The proof uses the non existence of invariant line fields in the Feigenbaum tower (C. McMullen), the topological convergence (D. Sullivan), and a new infinitesimal argument, different from previous methods by C. McMullen and M. Lyubich. The method is very general: for instance, it can be used in the classical renormalization operator and in the Fibonacci renormalization operator.

Puzzle geometry and rigidity: The Fibonacci cycle is hyperbolic

We describe a new and robust method to prove rigidity results in complex dynamics. The new ingredient is the geometry of the critical puzzle pieces: under control of geometry and ``complex bounds'', two generalized polynomial-like maps which admits a topological conjugacy, quasiconformal outside the filled-in Julia set are, indeed, quasiconformally conjugated. The proof uses a new abstract removability-type result for quasiconformal maps, following ideas of Heinonen & Koskela and Kallunki & Koskela, optimized to complex dynamics. As the first application to this new method, we prove that, for even criticalities distinct of two, the period two cycle of the Fibonacci renormalization operator is hyperbolic with one-dimensional unstable manifold. To derive the exponential contraction in the hybrid classes, we use the non existence of invariant line fields in the Fibonacci tower, the topological convergence (both results by van Strien & Nowicki) and a new argument, distinct of the C. McMullen and M. Lyubich previous methods in the classic renormalization operator theory. We also describe other future applications.

Renormalization theory for multimodal maps

We study the dynamics of the renormalization operator for multimodal maps. In particular, we prove the exponential convergence of this operator for infinitely renormalizable maps with same bounded combinatorial type.

Complex bounds for multimodal maps: bounded combinatorics

We proved the so called complex bounds for multimodal, infinitely renormalizable analytic maps with bounded combinatorics: deep renormalizations have polynomial-like extensions with definite modulus. The complex bounds is the first step to extend the renormalization theory of unimodal maps to multimodal maps.
