A Boxing Inequality for the Fractional Perimeter

We prove the Boxing inequality: $$\mathcal{H}^{d-α}_\infty(U) \leq Cα(1-α)\int_U \int_{\mathbb{R}^{d} \setminus U} \frac{\mathrm{d}y \, \mathrm{d}z}{|y-z|^{α+d}},$$ for every $α\in (0,1)$ and every bounded open subset $U \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $\mathcal{H}^{d-α}_\infty(U)$ is the Hausdorff content of $U$ of dimension $d -α$ and the constant $C > 0$ depends only on $d$. We then show how this estimate implies a trace inequality in the fractional Sobolev space $W^{α, 1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ that includes Sobolev's $L^{\frac{d}{d - α}}$ embedding, its Lorentz-space improvement, and Hardy's inequality. All these estimates are thus obtained with the appropriate asymptotics as $α$ tends to $0$ and $1$, recovering in particular the classical inequalities of first order. Their counterparts in the full range $α\in (0, d)$ are also investigated.

A note on the fractional perimeter and interpolation

We present the fractional perimeter as a set-function interpolation between the Lebesgue measure and the perimeter in the sense of De Giorgi. Our motivation comes from a new fractional Boxing inequality that relates the fractional perimeter and the Hausdorff content and implies several known inequalities involving the Gagliardo seminorm of the Sobolev spaces $W^{α, 1}$ of order $0 < α< 1$.

Some remarks on boundary operators of Bessel extensions

In this paper we study some boundary operators of a class of Bessel-type Littlewood-Paley extensions whose prototype is \[Δ_x u(x,y) +\frac{1-2s}{y} \frac{\partial u}{\partial y}(x,y)+\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial y^2}(x,y)=0 \text{ for }x\in\mathbb{R}^d, y>0, \\ u(x,0)=f(x) \text{ for }x\in\mathbb{R}^d. \] In particular, we show that with a logarithmic scaling one can capture the failure of analyticity of these extensions in the limiting cases $s=k \in \mathbb{N}$.

A Remark on an Integral Characterization of the Dual of BV

In this paper, we show how under the continuum hypothesis one can obtain an integral representation for elements of the topological dual of the space of functions of bounded variation in terms of Lebesgue and Kolmogorov-Burkill integrals.

On a new class of fractional partial differential equations II

In this paper we continue to advance the theory regarding the Riesz fractional gradient in the calculus of variations and fractional partial differential equations begun in an earlier work of the same name. In particular we here establish an $L^1$ Hardy inequality, obtain further regularity results for solutions of certain fractional PDE, demonstrate the existence of minimizers for integral functionals of the fractional gradient with non-linear dependence in the field, and also establish the existence of solutions to corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations obtained as conditions of minimality. In addition we pose a number of open problems, the answers to which would fill in some gaps in the theory as well as to establish connections with more classical areas of study, including interpolation and the theory of Dirichlet forms.

On a new class of fractional partial differential equations

In this paper, we study a new class of fractional partial differential equations which are obtained by minimizing variational problems in fractional Sobolev spaces. We introduce a notion of fractional gradient which has the potential to extend many classical results in the Sobolev spaces to the nonlocal and fractional setting in a natural way.

An $L^1$-type estimate for Riesz potentials

In this paper we establish new $L^1$-type estimates for the classical Riesz potentials of order $α\in (0, N)$: \[ \|I_αu\|_{L^{N/(N-α)}(\mathbb{R}^N)} \leq C \|Ru\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^N;\mathbb{R}^N)}. \] This sharpens the result of Stein and Weiss on the mapping properties of Riesz potentials on the real Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ and provides a new family of $L^1$-Sobolev inequalities for the Riesz fractional gradient.

On formulae decoupling the total variation of BV functions

In this paper we prove several formulae that enable one to capture the singular portion of the measure derivative of a function of bounded variation as a limit of non-local functionals. One special case shows that rescalings of the fractional Laplacian of a function $u\in SBV$ converge strictly to the singular portion of $Du$.

Regularity for a fractional p-Laplace equation

In this note we consider regularity theory for a fractional $p$-Laplace operator which arises in the complex interpolation of the Sobolev spaces, the $H^{s,p}$-Laplacian. We obtain the natural analogue to the classical $p$-Laplacian situation, namely $C^{s+α}_{loc}$-regularity for the homogeneous equation.

On a generalization of $L^p$-differentiability

In this paper we connect Calderón and Zygmund's notion of $L^p$\- -differentiability with some recent characterizations of Sobolev spaces via the asymptotics of non-local functionals due to Bourgain, Brezis, and Mironescu. We show how the results of the former can be generalized to the setting of the latter, while the latter results can be strengthened in the spirit of the former. As a consequence of these results we give several new characterizations of Sobolev spaces, a novel condition for whether a function of bounded variation is in the Sobolev space $W^{1,1}$, and complete the proof of a characterization of the Sobolev spaces claimed in the paper "Characterization of Sobolev and BV spaces".

$L^p$-theory for fractional gradient PDE with VMO coefficients

In this paper, we prove $L^p$ estimates for the fractional derivatives of solutions to elliptic fractional partial differential equations whose coefficients are $VMO$. In particular, our work extends the optimal regularity known in the second order elliptic setting to a spectrum of fractional order elliptic equations.

Analysis and Application of a non-local Hessian

In this work we introduce a formulation for a non-local Hessian that combines the ideas of higher-order and non-local regularization for image restoration, extending the idea of non-local gradients to higher-order derivatives. By carefully choosing the weights, the model allows to improve on the current state of the art higher-order method, Total Generalized Variation, with respect to overall quality and particularly close to jumps in the data. In the spirit of recent work by Brezis et al., our formulation also has analytic implications: for a suitable choice of weights, it can be shown to converge to classical second-order regularizers, and in fact allows a novel characterization of higher-order Sobolev and BV spaces

A Leray-Trudinger Inequality

We consider a multidimensional version of an inequality due to Leray as a substitute for Hardy's inequality in the case $p=n\geq2.$ In this paper we provide an optimal Sobolev-type improvement of this substitute, analogous to the corresponding improvements obtained for $p=2 n\geq1$ in G. On the role of Riesz potentials in Poisson's equation and Sobolev embeddings

In this paper, we study the mapping properties of the classical Riesz potentials acting on $L^p$-spaces. In the supercritical exponent, we obtain new "almost" Lipschitz continuity estimates for these and related potentials (including, for instance, the logarithmic potential). Applications of these continuity estimates include the deduction of new regularity estimates for distributional solutions to Poisson's equation, as well as a proof of the supercritical Sobolev embedding theorem first shown by Brezis and Wainger in 1980.

On regularity of solutions to Poisson's equation

In this note, we announce new regularity results for some locally integrable distributional solutions to Poisson's equation. This includes, for example, the standard solutions obtained by convolution with the fundamental solution. In particular, our results show that there is no qualitative difference in the regularity of these solutions in the plane and in higher dimensions.
