Cone length and Lusternik-Schnirelmann category in rational homotopy

Lusternik-Schnirelmann category (LS-category) of a topological space is the least integer $n$ such that there is a covering of $X$ by $n+1$ open sets, each of them being contractible in $X$. The cone length is the minimum number of cofibations necessary to get a space in the homotopy type of $X$, starting from a suspension and attaching suspensions. The LS-category of a space is always less than or equal to its cone length. Moreover, these two invariants differ by at most one. In 1981, J.-M. Lemaire and F. Sigrist conjectured that they are always equal for rational spaces. This conjecture is clearly true for spaces of LS-category 1 and, in 1986, Y. Félix and J-C. Thomas verify it for spaces of LS-category 2. But, in 1999, the general conjecture is invalidated by N. Dupont who built a rational space of cone-length 4 and LS-category 3. In this work, we provide examples of rational spaces of cone-length $(k+1)$ and LS-category $k$ for any $k>2$.

Intersection homotopy, refinements and coarsenings

In previous works, we studied intersection homotopy groups associated to a Goresky and MacPherson perversity and a filtered space. They are defined as the homotopy groups of simplicial sets introduced by P. Gajer. We particularized to locally conical spaces of Siebenmann (called CS sets) and established a topological invariance for them when the regular part remains unchanged. Here, we consider coarsenings, made of two structures of CS sets on the same topological space, the strata of one being a union of strata of the other. We endow them with a general perversity and its pushforward, where the adjective ``general'' means that the perversities are defined on the poset of the strata and not only according to their codimension. If the perversity verifies a growing property analogous to that of the original perversities of Goresky and MacPherson, we also find an invariance theorem for the intersection homotopy groups of a coarsening, under the above restriction on the regular parts. An invariance is shown too in some cases where singular strata become regular in the coarsening, for Thom-Mather spaces.

Subspace {L}usternik-{S}chnirelmann category of quasi-projective quaternionic spaces

Let $Q_n$ be the quasi-projective subspace of the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$. In this short note, we prove that the subspace Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of $Q_n$ in $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$ is 2. For that, we use a quaternionic logarithm, as Singhof did in the complex case for the determination of the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of the unitary group. Our result generalizes the known case $n=2$ (by L. Fernández-Suárez, A. Gómez-Tato and D. Tanré) and has to be compared to the equality $\mathrm{cat}\,Q_{3}=3$, established by N. Iwase and T. Miyauchi.

Natural operations in Intersection Cohomology

Eilenberg-MacLane spaces, that classify the singular cohomology groups of topological spaces, admit natural constructions in the framework of simplicial sets. The existence of similar spaces for the intersection cohomology groups of a stratified space is a long-standing open problem asked by M. Goresky and R. MacPherson. One feature of this work is a construction of such simplicial sets. From works of R. MacPherson, J. Lurie and others, it is now commonly accepted that the simplicial set of singular simplices associated to a topological space has to be replaced by the simplicial set of singular simplices that respect the stratification. This is encoded in the category of simplicial sets over the nerve of the poset of strata. For each perversity, we define a functor from it, with values in the category of cochain complexes over a commutative ring. This construction is based upon a simplicial blow up and the associated cohomology is the intersection cohomology as it was defined by M. Goresky and R. MacPherson. This functor admits an adjoint and we use it to get classifying spaces for intersection cohomology. Natural intersection cohomology operations are understood in terms of intersection cohomology of these classifying spaces. As in the classical case, they form infinite loop spaces. In the last section, we examine the depth one case of stratified spaces with only one singular stratum. We observe that the classifying spaces are Joyal's projective cones over classical Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. We establish some of their properties and conjecture that, for Goresky and MacPherson perversities, all intersection cohomology operations are induced by classical ones.

Simplicial intersection homology revisited

Intersection homology is defined for simplicial, singular and PL chains and it is well known that the three versions are isomorphic for a full filtered simplicial complex. In the literature, the isomorphism, between the singular and the simplicial situations of intersection homology, uses the PL case as an intermediate. Here we show directly that the canonical map between the simplicial and the singular intersection chains complexes is a quasi-isomorphism. This is similar to the classical proof for simplicial complexes, with an argument based on the concept of residual complex and not on skeletons. This parallel between simplicial and singular approaches is also extended to the intersection blown-up cohomology that we introduced in a previous work. In the case of an orientable pseudomanifold, this cohomology owns a Poincaré isomorphism with the intersection homology, for any coefficient ring, thanks to a cap product with a fundamental class. So, the blown-up intersection cohomology of a pseudomanifold can be computed from a triangulation. Finally, we introduce a blown-up intersection cohomology for PL spaces and prove that it is isomorphic to the singular one.

Relation between intersection homology and homotopy groups

As Goresky and MacPherson intersection homology is not the homology of a space, there is no preferred candidate for intersection homotopy groups. Here, they are defined as the homotopy groups of a simplicial set which P. Gajer associates to a couple $(X,\overline{p})$ of a filtered space and a perversity. We first establish some basic properties for the intersection fundamental groups, as a Van Kampen theorem. For general intersection homotopy groups on Siebenmann CS sets, we prove a Hurewicz theorem between them and the Goresky and MacPherson intersection homology. If the CS set and its intrinsic stratification have the same regular part, we establish the topological invariance of the $\overline{p}$-intersection homotopy groups. Several examples justify the hypotheses made in the statements. Finally, intersection homotopy groups also coincide with the homotopy groups of the topological space itself, for the top perversity on a connected, normal Thom-Mather space.

A reasonable notion of dimension for singular intersection homology

M. Goresky and R. MacPherson intersection homology is also defined from the singular chain complex of a filtered space by H. King, with a key formula to make selections among singular simplexes. This formula needs a notion of dimension for subspaces $S$ of a Euclidean simplex, which is usually taken as the smallest dimension of the skeleta containing~$S$. Later, P. Gajer employed another dimension based on the dimension of polyhedra containing $S$. This last one allows traces of pullbacks of singular strata in the interior of the domain of a singular simplex. In this work, we prove that the two corresponding intersection homologies are isomorphic for Siebenmann's CS sets. In terms of King's paper, this means that polyhedral dimension is a ``reasonable'' dimension. The proof uses a Mayer-Vietoris argument which needs an adaptated subdivision. With the polyhedral dimension, that is a subtle issue. General position arguments are not sufficient and we introduce strong general position. With it, a stability is added to the generic character and we can do an inductive cutting of each singular simplex. This decomposition is realised with pseudo-barycentric subdivisions where the new vertices are not barycentres but close points of them.

Homotopy truncations of homotopically stratified spaces

Intersection homology of Goresky and MacPherson can be defined from the Deligne sheaf, obtained from truncations of complexes of sheaves. As intersection homology is not the homology of a particular space, the search for a family of spaces whose homologies have properties analogous to intersection homology has developed. For some stratified spaces, M. Banagl has introduced such a family by using a topological truncation: the original link is replaced by a truncation of its homological Moore resolution. In this work, we study the dual approach in the Eckmann-Hilton sense : we consider the stratified space obtained by replacing the original link by a Postnikov approximation. The main result is that our construction restores the space constructed by Gajer to establish an intersection Dold-Thom theorem. We are conducting this study within the general framework of Quinn's homotopically stratified spaces.

Realization of Lie algebras and classifying spaces of crossed modules

The category of complete differential graded Lie algebras provides nice algebraic models for the rational homotopy types of non-simply connected spaces. In particular, there is a realization functor, $\langle -\rangle$, of any complete differential graded Lie algebra as a simplicial set. In a previous article, we considered the particular case of a complete graded Lie algebra, $L_{0}$, concentrated in degree 0 and proved that $\langle L_{0}\rangle$ is isomorphic to the usual bar construction on the Malcev group associated to $L_{0}$. Here we consider the case of a complete differential graded Lie algebra, $L=L_{0}\oplus L_{1}$, concentrated in degrees 0 and 1. We establish that the category of such two-stage Lie algebras is equivalent to explicit subcategories of crossed modules and Lie algebra crossed modules, extending the equivalence between pronilpotent Lie algebras and Malcev groups. In particular, there is a crossed module $\mathcal{C}(L)$ associated to $L$. We prove that $\mathcal{C}(L)$ is isomorphic to the Whitehead crossed module associated to the simplicial pair $(\langle L\rangle, \langle L_{0}\rangle)$. Our main result is the identification of $\langle L\rangle$ with the classifying space of $\mathcal{C}(L)$.

Non-linear Morse-Bott functions on quaternionic Stiefel manifolds

In the Stiefel manifold $X_{n,k}$, we replace Frankel linear height function by a quadratic one. We prove this is still a Morse-Bott function, whose structure of critical levels presents a dichotomy according to the sign of $n-2k$. The critical submanifolds are no longer Grassmannians but total spaces of fibrations of basis a product of two Grassmannians. We explicitly integrate the gradient flow.

Variations on Poincaré duality for intersection homology

Intersection homology with coefficients in a field restores Poincaré duality for some spaces with singularities, as pseudomanifolds. But, with coefficients in a ring, the behaviours of manifolds and pseudomanifolds are different. This work is an overview, with proofs and explicit examples, of various possible situations with their properties. We first set up a duality, defined from a cap product, between two intersection cohomologies: the first one arises from a linear dual and the second one from a simplicial blow up. Moreover, from this property, Poincaré duality in intersection homology looks like the Poincaré-Lefschetz duality of a manifold with boundary. Besides that, an investigation of the coincidence of the two previous cohomologies reveals that the only obstruction to the existence of a Poincaré duality is the homology of a well defined complex. This recovers the case of the peripheral sheaf introduced by Goresky and Siegel for compact PL-pseudomanifolds. We also list a series of explicit computations of peripheral intersection cohomology. In particular, we observe that Poincaré duality can exist in the presence of torsion in the "critical degree" of the intersection homology of the links of a pseudomanifold.

Blown-up intersection cochains and Deligne's sheaves

In a series of papers the authors introduced the so-called blown-up intersection cochains. These cochains are suitable to study products and cohomology operations of intersection cohomology of stratified spaces. The aim of this paper is to prove that the sheaf versions of the functors of blown-up intersection cochains are realizations of Deligne's sheaves. This proves that Deligne's sheaves can be incarnated at the level of complexes of sheaves by soft sheaves of perverse differential graded algebras. We also study Poincaré and Verdier dualities of blown-up intersections sheaves with the use of Borel-Moore chains of intersection.

Relative singular value decomposition and applications to LS-category

Let $Sp(n)$ be the symplectic group of quaternionic $(n\times n)$-matrices. For any $1\leq k\leq n$, an element $A$ of $Sp(n)$ can be decomposed in $A= \begin{bmatrix} α&T\cr β&P \end{bmatrix}$ with $P$ a $(k\times k)$-matrix. In this work, starting from a singular value decomposition of $P$, we obtain what we call a relative singular value decomposition of $A$. This feature is well adapted for the study of the quaternionic Stiefel manifold $X_{n,k}$, and we apply it to the determination of the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of $Sp(k)$ in $X_{2k-j,k}$, for $j= 0,\,1,\,2$

Intersection Homology. General perversities and topological invariance

Topological invariance of the intersection homology of a pseudomanifold without codimension one strata, proven by Goresky and MacPherson, is one of the main features of this homology. This property is true for codimension-dependent perversities with some growth conditions, verifying $\overline p(1)=\overline p(2)=0$. King reproves this invariance by associating an intrinsic pseudomanifold $X^*$ to any pseudomanifold $X$. His proof consists of an isomorphism between the associated intersection homologies $H^{\overline{p}}_{*}(X) \cong H^{\overline{p}}_{*}( X^*)$ for any perversity $\overline{p}$ with the same growth conditions verifying $\overline p(1)\geq 0$. In this work, we prove a certain topological invariance within the framework of strata-dependent perversities, $\overline{p}$, which corresponds to the classical topological invariance if $\overline{p}$ is a GM-perversity. We also extend it to the tame intersection homology, a variation of the intersection homology, particularly suited for ``large'' perversities, if there is no singular strata on $X$ becoming regular in $X^*$. In particular, under the above conditions, the intersection homology and the tame intersection homology are invariant under a refinement of the stratification.

Symmetric Lie models of a triangle

R. Lawrence and D. Sullivan have constructed a Lie model for an interval from the geometrical idea of flat connections and flows of gauge transformations. Their model supports an action of the symmetric group $Σ_2$ reflecting the geometrical symmetry of the interval. In this work, we present a Lie model of the triangle with an action of the symmetric group $Σ_3$ compatible with the geometrical symmetries of the triangle. We also prove that the model of a graph consisting of a circuit with $k$ vertices admits a Maurer-Cartan element stable by the automorphisms of the graph.

Homotopy theory of complete Lie algebras and Lie models of simplicial sets

In a previous work, by extending the classical Quillen construction to the non-simply connected case, we have built a pair of adjoint functors, 'model' and 'realization', between the categories of simplicial sets and complete differential graded Lie algebras. This paper is a follow up of this work. We show that when X is a finite connected simplicial set, then the realization of the model of X is the disjoint union of the Bousfield-Kan completion of X with an external point. We also define a model category structure on the category of complete differential graded algebras making the two previous functors a Quillen pair, and we construct an explicit cylinder. In particular, these functors preserve homotopies and weak equivalences and therefore, this gives the basis for developing a Lie rational homotopy theory for all spaces.
