Vector meson photoproduction in UPCs with FoCal

We discuss the physics prospects of photon-induced measurements using the high-granularity FoCal detector to be installed at the ALICE experiment, covering the pseudorapidity interval $3.4 \leq η\leq 5.8$. This new detector, scheduled to be in operation from Run 4, will explore the small Bjorken-$x$ physics region in an unprecedented way. In this region the gluon saturation phenomenon is expected to be dominant. Combined with the rest of the ALICE subdetectors, including the zero degree calorimenters, FoCal will serve to reconstruct in a model-independent way the measured photoproduction cross sections for vectors mesons in a wide range of photon-target energies, down to $x$ values of about $7\times 10^{-6}$ and $2\times 10^{-6}$ in ultra-peripheral photon--proton and photon--lead collisions, respectively.

White Paper on Forward Physics, BFKL, Saturation Physics and Diffraction

The goal of this whitepaper is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics. We discuss the occurrences of BFKL resummation effects in special final states, such as Mueller-Navelet jets, jet gap jets, and heavy quarkonium production. It further addresses TMD factorization at low x and the manifestation of a semi-hard saturation scale in (generalized) TMD PDFs. More theoretical aspects of low x physics, probes of the quark gluon plasma, as well as the possibility to use photon-hadron collisions at the LHC to constrain hadronic structure at low x, and the resulting complementarity between LHC and the EIC are also presented. We also briefly discuss diffraction at colliders as well as the possibility to explore further the electroweak theory in central exclusive events using the LHC as a photon-photon collider.

New opportunities at the photon energy frontier

Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

Quantum Tomography Measures Entanglement in Collider Reactions

Entanglement in high energy and and nuclear reactions is receiving great attention. A proper description of these reactions uses density matrices, and the express of entanglement in terms of {\it separability}. Quantum tomography bypasses field-theoretic formalism to determine density matrices in terms of experimental observables. We review recent work applying quantum tomography to practical experimental data analysis. We discuss the relation between separability, as defined in quantum information science, and factorization, as defined in high energy physics. When factorization applies, it comes from using separable probes, which tomographically determine separable projections of entangled density matrices.
