A Morawetz inequality for gravity-capillary water waves at low Bond number

This paper is devoted to the 2D gravity-capillary water waves equations in their Hamiltonian formulation, addressing the general question of proving Morawetz inequalities. We continue the analysis initiated in our previous work, where we have established local energy decay estimates for gravity waves. Here we add surface tension and prove a stronger estimate with a local regularity gain, akin to the smoothing effect for dispersive equations. Our main result holds globally in time and holds for genuinely nonlinear waves, since we are only assuming some very mild uniform Sobolev bounds for the solutions. Furthermore, it is uniform both in the infinite depth limit and the zero surface tension limit.

No solitary waves in 2-d gravity and capillary waves in deep water

A fundamental question in the study of water waves is the existence and stability of solitary waves. Solitary waves have been proved to exist and have been studied in many interesting situations, and often arise from the balance of different forces/factors influencing the fluid dynamics, e.g. gravity, surface tension or the fluid bottom. However, the existence of solitary waves has remained an open problem in two of the simplest cases, namely for either pure gravity waves or pure capillary waves in infinite depth. In this article we settle both of these questions in two space dimensions. Precisely, we consider incompressible, irrotational, infinite depth water wave equation, either with gravity and without surface tension, or without gravity but with surface tension. In both of these cases we prove that there are no solitary waves.

Wave maps on (1+2)-dimensional curved spacetimes

In this article we initiate the study of 1+ 2 dimensional wave maps on a curved spacetime in the low regularity setting. Our main result asserts that in this context the wave maps equation is locally well-posed at almost critical regularity. As a key part of the proof of this result, we generalize the classical optimal bilinear L^2 estimates for the wave equation to variable coefficients, by means of wave packet decompositions and characteristic energy estimates. This allows us to iterate in a curved X^{s,b} space.

The NLS approximation for two dimensional deep gravity waves

This article is concerned with infinite depth gravity water waves in two space dimensions. We consider this system expressed in position-velocity potential holomorphic coordinates. Our goal is to study this problem with small wave packet data, and to show that this is well approximated by the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the natural cubic time scale.

A Morawetz inequality for water waves

We consider gravity water waves in two space dimensions, with finite or infinite depth. Assuming some uniform scale invariant Sobolev bounds for the solutions, we prove local energy decay (Morawetz) estimates globally in time. Our result is uniform in the infinite depth limit.

Conserved energies for the cubic NLS in 1-d

We consider the cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLS) as well as the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation in one space dimension. We prove that for each $s>-\frac12$ there exists a conserved energy which is equivalent to the $H^s$ norm of the solution. For the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation there is a similar conserved energy for every $s\ge -1$.

Null structures and degenerate dispersion relations in two space dimensions

Motivated by water-wave problems, in this paper we consider a class of nonlinear dispersive PDEs in 2D with cubic nonlinearities, whose dispersion relations are radial and have vanishing Guassian curvature on a circle. For such a model we identify certain null structures for the cubic nonlinearity, which suffice in order to guarantee global scattering solutions for the small data problem. Our null structures in the power-type nonlinearity are weak, and only eliminate the worst nonlinear interaction. Such null structures arise naturally in some water-wave problems.

The Threshold Theorem for the $(4+1)$-dimensional Yang--Mills equation: an overview of the proof

This article is devoted to the energy critical hyperbolic Yang--Mills system in the $(4+1)$ dimensional Minkowski space, which is considered by the authors in a sequence of four papers. The final outcome of these papers is twofold: (i) the Threshold Theorem, which asserts that global well-posedness and scattering hold for all topologically trivial initial data with energy below twice the ground state energy, and (ii) the Dichotomy Theorem, which for larger data in arbitrary topological classes provides a choice of two outcomes, either a global, scattering solution or a soliton bubbling off. In the last case, the bubbling off phenomena can happen either (a) in finite time, triggering a finite time blow-up, or (b) in infinite time. Our goal here is to describe these results, and to provide an overview of the flow of ideas within their proofs.

Pointwise decay for the Maxwell field on black hole space-times

In this article we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the Maxwell system on a class of nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time, we establish peeling estimates for all the components of the Maxwell tensor.

The lifespan of small data solutions in two dimensional capillary water waves

This article is concerned with the incompressible, irrotational infinite depth water wave equation in two space dimensions, without gravity but with surface tension. We consider this problem expressed in position-velocity potential holomorphic coordinates, and prove that small data solutions have at least cubic lifespan while small localized data leads to global solutions.

Local energy decay for scalar fields on time dependent non-trapping backgrounds

We consider local energy decay estimates for solutions to scalar wave equations on nontrapping asymptotically flat space-times. Our goals are two-fold. First we consider the stationary case, where we can provide a full spectral characterization of local energy decay bounds; this characterization simplifies in the stationary symmetric case. Then we consider the almost stationary, almost symmetric case. There we establish two main results: The first is a "two point" local energy decay estimate which is valid for a general class of (non-symmetric) almost stationary wave equations which satisfy a certain nonresonance property at zero frequency. The second result, which also requires the almost symmetry condition, is to establish an exponential trichotomy in the energy space via finite dimensional time dependent stable and unstable sub-spaces, with an infinite dimensional complement on which solutions disperse via the usual local energy decay estimate.

Well-posedness and dispersive decay of small data solutions for the Benjamin-Ono equation

This article represents a first step toward understanding the long time dynamics of solutions for the Benjamin-Ono equation. While this problem is known to be both completely integrable and globally well-posed in $L^2$, much less seems to be known concerning its long time dynamics. Here, we prove that for small localized data the solutions have (nearly) dispersive dynamics almost globally in time. An additional objective is to revisit the $L^2$ theory for the Benjamin-Ono equation and provide a simpler, self-contained approach.

Two dimensional gravity water waves with constant vorticity: I. Cubic lifespan

This article is concerned with the incompressible, infinite depth water wave equation in two space dimensions, with gravity and constant vorticity but with no surface tension. We consider this problem expressed in position-velocity potential holomorphic coordinates, and prove local well-posedness for large data, as well as cubic lifespan bounds for small data solutions.

Finite depth gravity water waves in holomorphic coordinates

In this article we consider irrotational gravity water waves with finite bottom. Our goal is two-fold. First, we represent the equations in holomorphic coordinates and discuss the local well-posedness of the problem in this context. Second, we consider the small data problem and establish cubic lifespan bounds for the solutions. Our results are uniform in the infinite depth limit, and match the earlier infinite depth result of Hunter-Ifrim-Tataru.

Local well-posedness of the (4+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation at energy regularity

This paper is the first part of a trilogy dedicated to a proof of global well-posedness and scattering of the (4+1)-dimensional mass-less Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation (MKG) for any finite energy initial data. The main result of the present paper is a large energy local well-posedness theorem for MKG in the global Coulomb gauge, where the lifespan is bounded from below by the energy concentration scale of the data. Hence the proof of global well-posedness is reduced to establishing non-concentration of energy. To deal with non-local features of MKG we develop initial data excision and gluing techniques at critical regularity, which might be of independent interest.

Energy dispersed solutions for the (4+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation

This article is devoted to the mass-less energy critical Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system in 4+1 dimensions. In earlier work of the second author, joint with Krieger and Sterbenz, we have proved that this problem has global well-posedness and scattering in the Coulomb gauge for small initial data. This article is the second of a sequence of three papers of the authors, whose goal is to show that the same result holds for data with arbitrarily large energy. Our aim here is to show that large data solutions persist for as long as one has small energy dispersion; hence failure of global well-posedness must be accompanied with a non-trivial energy dispersion.
