Self-consistent description of a spherically-symmetric gravitational collapse

In spherical symmetry, the total energy-momentum tensor near the apparent horizon is identified up to a single function of time from two assumptions: a trapped region forms at a finite time of a distant observer, and values of two curvature scalars are finite at its boundary. In general relativity, this energy-momentum tensor leads to the unique limiting form of the metric. The null energy condition is violated across the apparent horizon and is satisfied in the vicinity of the inner apparent horizon. As a result, homogenous collapse models cannot describe the formation of a black hole. Properties of matter change discontinuously immediately after formation of a trapped region. Absolute values of comoving density, pressure, and flux coincide at the apparent horizon. Thus, collapse of ideal fluids cannot lead to the formation of black holes. Moreover, these three quantities diverge at the expanding apparent horizon, producing a regular (i.e., finite curvature) firewall. This firewall is incompatible with quantum energy inequalities, implying that trapped regions, once formed at some finite time of a distant observer, cannot grow.

Hybrid classical-quantum dynamics

A hybrid formalism is proposed for interacting classical and quantum sytems. This formalism is mathematically consistent and reduces to standard classical and quantum mechanics in the case of no interaction. However, in the presence of interaction, the correspondence principle is violated.

Convex probability domain of generalized quantum measurements

Generalized quantum measurements with N distinct outcomes are used for determining the density matrix, of order d, of an ensemble of quantum systems. The resulting probabilities are represented by a point in an N-dimensional space. It is shown that this point lies in a convex domain having at most d^2-1 dimensions.

Optimal distinction between non-orthogonal quantum states

Given a finite set of linearly independent quantum states, an observer who examines a single quantum system may sometimes identify its state with certainty. However, unless these quantum states are orthogonal, there is a finite probability of failure. A complete solution is given to the problem of optimal distinction of three states, having arbitrary prior probabilities and arbitrary detection values. A generalization to more than three states is outlined.

Evolution of Liouville density of a chaotic system

An area-preserving map of the unit sphere, consisting of alternating twists and turns, is mostly chaotic. A Liouville density on that sphere is specified by means of its expansion into spherical harmonics. That expansion initially necessitates only a finite number of basis functions. As the dynamical mapping proceeds, it is found that the number of non-negligible coefficients increases exponentially with the number of steps. This is to be contrasted with the behavior of a Schrödinger wave function which requires, for the analogous quantum system, a basis of fixed size.
