Spatial quasiperiodic driving of a dissipative optical lattice and origin of directed Brillouin modes in a randomly diffusing cold atom cloud

Atoms confined in a three-dimensional dissipative optical lattice oscillate inside potential wells, occasionally hopping to adjacent wells, thereby diffusing in all directions. Illumination by a weak probe beam modulates the lattice, yielding propagating atomic density waves, referred to as Brillouin modes which travel perpendicular to the direction of travel of the probe. The probe is made incident at a small angle relative to a lattice symmetry axis, yielding a driving potential perturbation whose spatial period is not a multiple of the period of the underlying optical potential, thus enabling exploration of the regime of space quasiperiodic drive. A theory, based on the Fourier decomposition of the current into its atomic density wave contributions, reveals that unlike the previously studied time quasiperiodic case, wherein a lattice driven by two incommensurate frequencies may exhibit abrupt suppression in directed current as the driving transitions from quasiperiodic to periodic, a spatial-quasiperiodically driven lattice exhibits no such abrupt response. Further, detailed modeling of spatial-quasiperiodically driven lattices reveals that directed propagation occurs not only as a consequence of velocity-matching between the propagating modulation and the average velocity of the atom oscillating inside a well as was previously reported in the literature, but also as a distinct consequence of a new mechanism, namely, frequency-matching between the modulation frequency and the oscillation frequencies. A systematic measurement of the transmitted probe spectra as a function of off-axis probe angle is presented, which is consistent with the velocity- and frequency-matching predictions from the detailed model.

Observation of stochastic resonance in directed propagation of cold atoms

Randomly diffusing atoms confined in a dissipative optical lattice are illuminated by a weak probe of light. The probe transmission spectrum reveals directed atomic propagation that occurs perpendicular to the direction of probe beam propagation. Resonant enhancement of this directed propagation is observed as we vary the random photon scattering rate. We experimentally characterize this stochastic resonance as a function of probe intensity and lattice well depth. A simple model reveals how the probe-excited atomic density waves and optical pumping rates conspire to create directed atomic propagation within a randomly diffusing sample.

On the perturbation of positive semigroups

We prove a perturbation result for positive semigroups, thereby extending a heat kernel estimate by Barlow, Grigor'yan and Kumagai for Dirichlet forms (\cite{bgk2009}) to positive semigroups. This also leads to a generalization of domination for semigroups on $L_p$-spaces.

Intrinsic metrics for non-local symmetric Dirichlet forms and applications to spectral theory

We present a study of what may be called an intrinsic metric for a general regular Dirichlet form. For such forms we then prove a Rademacher type theorem. For strongly local forms we show existence of a maximal intrinsic metric (under a weak continuity condition) and for Dirichlet forms with an absolutely continuous jump kernel we characterize intrinsic metrics by bounds on certain integrals. We then turn to applications on spectral theory and provide for (measure perturbation of) general regular Dirichlet forms an Allegretto-Piepenbrinck type theorem, which is based on a ground state transform, and a Shnol type theorem. Our setting includes Laplacian on manifolds, on graphs and $\alpha$-stable processes.

Compactness of Schrödinger semigroups

This paper is concerned with emptyness of the essential spectrum, or equivalently compactness of the semigroup, for perturbations of selfadjoint operators that are bounded below (on an L^2-space). For perturbations by a (nonnegative) potential we obtain a simple criterion for compactness of the semigroup in terms of relative compactness of the operators of multiplication with characteristic functions of sublevel sets. In the context of Dirichlet forms, we can even characterize compactness of the semigroup for measure perturbations. Here, certain 'averages' of the measure outside of compact sets play a role. As an application we obtain compactness of semigroups for Schrödinger operators with potentials whose sublevel sets are thin at infinity.
