CP violation, the CKM matrix and New Physics

Loop corrections for physics beyond the Standard Model are computed. DWe discuss the influence of new physics on CP-violating observables. Assuming the standard model gives a correct description of tree level processes, we show how a consistent procedure can determine the parameters of the standard model and check its validity also in loop induced processes. A method to include new physics in a systematic way is sketched.

Exploring CP Violation with $B_c$ Decays

We point out that the pure ``tree'' decays $B_c^\pm\to D^\pm_s D$ are particularly well suited to extract the CKM angle $γ$ through amplitude relations. In contrast to conceptually similar strategies using $B^\pm\to K^\pm D$ or $B_d\to K^{\ast0} D$ decays, the advantage of the $B_c$ approach is that the corresponding triangles have three sides of comparable length and do not involve small amplitudes. Decays of the type $B_c^\pm\to D^\pm D$ -- the $U$-spin counterparts of $B_c^\pm\to D^\pm_s D$ -- can be added to the analysis, as well as channels, where the $D^\pm_s$- and $D^\pm$-mesons are replaced by higher resonances.

The $c \to u γ$ Contribution to Weak Radiative Charm Decay

The $c \to u γ$ transition does not occur at the tree level in the Standard Model and is strongly GIM-suppressed at one loop. The leading QCD logarithms are known to enhance the amplitude by two orders of magnitude. We point out that the amplitude increases further by two orders of magnitude after including the complete 2-loop QCD contributions. Nevertheless, $ΔS =0$ radiative decays of charmed hadrons remain dominated by the $c \to d \bar{d} u γ$ and $c \to s \bar{s} u γ$ quark subprocesses.

Constraints on the Universal Contact Interaction

Forces beyond those of the standard model may manifest themselves at low energies as four-fermion contact interactions. If these new forces are independent of colour and flavour quantum numbers including baryon and lepton number, then all low energy constraints, arising from quark-lepton universality, flavour-changing neutral currents and atomic parity violation are evaded. This is due to the global U(45) symmetry which the standard model exhibits in the limit of vanishing gauge and Yukawa couplings. The corresponding contact interaction is a unique current-current interaction. Constraints from LEP2 imply that this universal contact interaction cannot be the origin of the recently observed high-$Q^2$ events at HERA.

$K_L \to π^0 e^+ e^-$ and $B \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ Decay in the MSSM

The flavor changing neutral current processes $K_L \to π^0 e^+ e^-$, $B \to X_s e^+ e^-$ and $B \to X_s μ^+ μ^-$ are studied within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We first examine the rates for these decay modes in the MSSM with a universal soft supersymmetry breaking sector at a Grand Unification scale. We later relax the universality condition and investigate the FCNC transitions in a more general class of models with negligible flavor violation in squark mixing matrices. We find that the MSSM prediction for the kaon channel's branching fraction differs from its Standard Model value by at most 30\% over the entire allowed parameter space. On the other hand, supersymmetric contributions could potentially enhance certain $B \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ observables by more than 100\% relative to Standard Model expectations. The impact of supersymmetry upon the $B$ meson modes is strongly correlated with the MSSM value for the Wilson coefficient of the magnetic moment operator that mediates $B \to X_s γ$.
