The $\mathcal{N} = 2$ Prepotential and the Sphere Free Energy

We study the mass-deformed sphere free energy of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal field theories with holographic duals. Building on previous observations, we conjecture a proportionality relation between the sphere free energy on the boundary and the prepotential of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supergravity theory in the bulk. We verify this formula by explicit computation in several examples of supergravity theories with vector multiplets and hypermultiplets.

The Holographic Contributions to the Sphere Free Energy

We study which bulk couplings contribute to the $S^3$ free energy $F(\mathfrak{m})$ of three-dimensional ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal field theories with holographic duals, potentially deformed by boundary real-mass parameters $\mathfrak{m}$. In particular, we show that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ is independent of a large class of bulk couplings that include non-chiral F-terms and all D-terms. On the other hand, in general, $F(\mathfrak{m})$ does depend non-trivially on bulk chiral F-terms, such as prepotential interactions, and on bulk real-mass terms. These conclusions can be reached solely from properties of the AdS super-algebra, $\mathfrak{osp}(2|4)$. We also consider massive vector multiplets in AdS, which in the dual field theory correspond to long single-trace superconformal multiplets of spin zero. We provide evidence that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ is insensitive to the vector multiplet mass and to the interaction couplings between the massive vector multiplet and massless ones. In particular, this implies that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ does not contain information about scaling dimensions or OPE coefficients of single-trace long scalar ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal multiplets.

A Bispinor Formalism for Spinning Witten Diagrams

We develop a new embedding-space formalism for AdS$_4$ and CFT$_3$ that is useful for evaluating Witten diagrams for operators with spin. The basic variables are Killing spinors for the bulk AdS$_4$ and conformal Killing spinors for the boundary CFT$_3$. The more conventional embedding space coordinates $X^I$ for the bulk and $P^I$ for the boundary are bilinears in these new variables. We write a simple compact form for the general bulk-boundary propagator, and, for boundary operators of spin $\ell \geq 1$, we determine its conservation properties at the unitarity bound. In our CFT$_3$ formalism, we identify an $\mathfrak{so}(5,5)$ Lie algebra of differential operators that includes the basic weight-shifting operators. These operators, together with a set of differential operators in AdS$_4$, can be used to relate Witten diagrams with spinning external legs to Witten diagrams with only scalar external legs. We provide several applications that include Compton scattering and the evaluation of an $R^4$ contact interaction in AdS$_4$. Finally, we derive bispinor formulas for the bulk-to-bulk propagators of massive spinor and vector gauge fields and evaluate a diagram with spinor exchange.

$T \bar{T}$-Deformed Actions and (1,1) Supersymmetry

We describe an algorithmic method to calculate the $T\bar{T}$ deformed Lagrangian of a given seed theory by solving an algebraic system of equations. This method is derived from the topological gravity formulation of the deformation. This algorithm is far simpler than the direct partial differential equations needed in most earlier proposals. We present several examples, including the deformed Lagrangian of (1,1) supersymmetry. We show that this Lagrangian is off-shell invariant through order $λ^2$ in the deformation parameter and verify its SUSY algebra through order $λ$.

Duality Constraints on Counterterms in $\mathcal N=5,\ 6$ Supergravities

The UV finiteness found in calculations of the 4-point amplitude in $\mathcal N=5$ supergravity at loop order $L=3, 4$ has not been explained, which motivates our study of the relevant superspace invariants and on-shell superamplitudes for both $\mathcal N=5$ and $\mathcal N=6$. The local 4-point superinvariants for $L = 3,4$ are expected to have nonlinear completions whose 6-point amplitudes have non-vanishing SSL's (soft scalar limits), violating the behavior required of Goldstone bosons. For $\mathcal N=5$, we find at $L=3$ that local 6-point superinvariant and superamplitudes, which might cancel these SSL's, do not exist. This rules out the candidate 4-point counterterm and thus gives a plausible explanation of the observed $L=3$ finiteness. However, at $L= 4$ we construct a local 6-point superinvariant with non-vanishing SSL's, so the SSL argument does not explain the observed $L=4$ $\mathcal N=5$ UV finiteness. For $\mathcal N=6$ supergravity there are no 6-point invariants at either $L= 3$ or 4, so the SSL argument predicts UV finiteness.

Absence of U(1) Anomalous Superamplitudes in $\mathcal{N}\geq 5$ Supergravities

We list all potential candidates for U(1) anomalous non-local 1-loop 4-point amplitudes and higher loop UV divergences in $\mathcal{N}\geq 5$ supergravities. The relevant chiral superinvariants are constructed from linearized chiral superfields and define the corresponding superamplitudes. The anomalous amplitudes, of the kind present in $\mathcal{N}=4$, are shown to be absent in $\mathcal{N} \geq 5$. In $\mathcal{N}=6$ supergravity the result is deduced from the double-copy $\mathcal{N}=4_{YM} \times (\mathcal{N}=2)_{YM}$ model, whereas in $\mathcal{N}=5,8$ the result on absence of anomalous amplitudes is derived in supergravities as well as in the $(\mathcal{N}=4)_{YM} \times (\mathcal{N}-4)_{YM}$ double-copy models.

Off-shell Poincare Supergravity

We present the action and transformation rules of Poincare supergravity coupled to chiral multiplets $(z^α, χ^α, h^α)$ with off-shell auxiliary fields. Starting from the geometric formulation of the superconformal theory with auxiliary fields, we derive the Poincare counterpart by gauge-fixing the Weyl and chiral symmetry and S-supersymmetry. We show how this transition is facilitated by retaining explicit target-space covariance. Our results form a convenient starting point to study models with constrained superfields, including general matter-coupled de Sitter supergravity.

Spinning Geodesic Witten Diagrams

We present an expression for the four-point conformal blocks of symmetric traceless operators of arbitrary spin as an integral over a pair of geodesics in Anti-de Sitter space, generalizing the geodesic Witten diagram formalism of Hijano et al [arXiv:1508.00501] to arbitrary spin. As an intermediate step in the derivation, we identify a convenient basis of bulk three-point interaction vertices which give rise to all possible boundary three point structures. We highlight a direct connection between the representation of the conformal block as a geodesic Witten diagram and the shadow operator formalism.

Lecture for the Fortieth Anniversary of Supergravity

In the first part of this lecture, some very basic ideas in supersymmetry and supergravity are presented at a level accessible to readers with modest background in quantum field theory and general relativity. The second part is an outline of a recent paper of the author and his collaborators on the AdS/CFT correspondence applied to the ABJM gauge theory with $\cal{N} =8$ supersymmetry.

Boundary Terms and Three-Point Functions: An AdS/CFT Puzzle Resolved

${\cal N} = 8$ superconformal field theories, such as the ABJM theory at Chern-Simons level $k=1$ or $2$, contain 35 scalar operators ${\cal O}_{IJ}$ with $Δ=1$ in the ${\bf 35}_v$ representation of SO(8). The 3-point correlation function of these operators is non-vanishing, and indeed can be calculated non-perturbatively in the field theory. But its AdS$_4$ gravity dual, obtained from gauged ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity, has no cubic $A^3$ couplings in its Lagrangian, where $A^{IJ}$ is the bulk dual of ${\cal O}_{IJ}$. So conventional Witten diagrams cannot furnish the field theory result. We show that the extension of bulk supersymmetry to the AdS$_4$ boundary requires the introduction of a finite $A^3$ counterterm that does provide a perfect match to the 3-point correlator. Boundary supersymmetry also requires infinite counterterms which agree with the method of holographic renormalization. The generating functional of correlation functions of the $Δ=1$ operators is the Legendre transform of the on-shell action, and the supersymmetry properties of this functional play a significant role in our treatment.

A Geometric Formulation of Supersymmetry

The scalar fields of supersymmetric models are coordinates of a geometric space. We propose a formulation of supersymmetry that is covariant with respect to reparametrizations of this target space. Employing chiral multiplets as an example, we introduce modified supersymmetry variations and redefined auxiliary fields that transform covariantly under reparametrizations. The resulting action and transformation laws are manifestly covariant and highlight the geometric structure of the supersymmetric theory. The covariant methods are developed first for general theories (not necessarily supersymmetric) whose scalar fields are coordinates of a Riemannian target space.

Pure de Sitter Supergravity

Using superconformal methods we derive an explicit de Sitter supergravity action invariant under spontaneously broken local ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. The supergravity multiplet interacts with a nilpotent goldstino multiplet. We present a complete locally supersymmetric action including the graviton and the fermionic fields, gravitino and goldstino, no scalars. In the global limit when supergravity multiplet decouples, our action reproduces the Volkov-Akulov theory. In the unitary gauge where goldstino vanishes we recover pure supergravity with the positive cosmological constant. The classical equations of motion, with all fermions vanishing, have a maximally symmetric solution: de Sitter space.

Explicitly Broken Supersymmetry with Exactly Massless Moduli

There is an avatar of the little hierarchy problem of the MSSM in 3-dimensional supersymmetry. We propose a solution to this problem in AdS$_3$ based on the AdS/CFT correspondence. The bulk theory is a supergravity theory in which U(1) $\times$ U(1) R-symmetry is gauged by Chern-Simons fields. The bulk theory is deformed by a boundary term quadratic in the gauge fields. It breaks SUSY completely and sources an exactly marginal operator in the dual CFT. SUSY breaking is communicated by gauge interactions to bulk scalar fields and their spinor superpartners. Since the R-charges of scalar and spinor differ, this generates a SUSY breaking shift of their masses. The Ward identity facilitates the calculation of these mass shifts to any desired order in the strength of the deformation. Moduli fields are massless $R$-neutral bulk scalars with vanishing potential in the undeformed theory. These properties are maintained to all orders in the deformation despite the fact that moduli couple in the bulk to loops of R-charged fields.

Late-time Structure of the Bunch-Davies De Sitter Wavefunction

We examine the late time behavior of the Bunch-Davies wavefunction for interacting light fields in a de Sitter background. We use perturbative techniques developed in the framework of AdS/CFT, and analytically continue to compute tree and loop level contributions to the Bunch-Davies wavefunction. We consider self-interacting scalars of general mass, but focus especially on the massless and conformally coupled cases. We show that certain contributions grow logarithmically in conformal time both at tree and loop level. We also consider gauge fields and gravitons. The four-dimensional Fefferman-Graham expansion of classical asymptotically de Sitter solutions is used to show that the wavefunction contains no logarithmic growth in the pure graviton sector at tree level. Finally, assuming a holographic relation between the wavefunction and the partition function of a conformal field theory, we interpret the logarithmic growths in the language of conformal field theory.

AdS/CFT and the Little Hierarchy Problem

The AdS/CFT correspondence is applied to a close analogue of the little hierarchy problem in $AdS_{d+1}$, $d \geq 3$. The new mechanism requires a Maxwell field that gauges a $U(1)_R$ symmetry in a bulk supergravity theory with a negative cosmological constant. Supersymmetry is explicitly broken by a non-local boundary term with dimensionless coupling $h$. Non-locality appears to cause no pathology, and the SUSY breaking deformation engendered is exactly marginal. SUSY breaking effects in the bulk are computed using the $U(1)$ Ward identity. Conformal dimensions and thus masses of scalar and spinor partners are split simply because they carry different R-charges. However SUSY breaking effects cancel to all orders for R-neutral fields, even in diagrams with internal R-charged loops. SUSY breaking corrections can be summed to all orders in $h$. Diagrams involving graviton loops do not introduce any further SUSY breaking corrections. A possible scenario for a flat spacetime limit is outlined.

de Sitter Supersymmetry Revisited

We present the basic $\mathcal{N} =1$ superconformal field theories in four-dimensional de Sitter space-time, namely the non-abelian super Yang-Mills theory and the chiral multiplet theory with gauge interactions or cubic superpotential. These theories have eight supercharges and are invariant under the full $SO(4,2)$ group of conformal symmetries, which includes the de Sitter isometry group $SO(4,1)$ as a subgroup. The theories are ghost-free and the anti-commutator $\sum_α\{Q_α, Q^{α\dagger}\}$ is positive. SUSY Ward identities uniquely select the Bunch-Davies vacuum state. This vacuum state is invariant under superconformal transformations, despite the fact that de Sitter space has non-zero Hawking temperature. The $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories are classically invariant under the $SU(2,2|1)$ superconformal group, but this symmetry is broken by radiative corrections. However, no such difficulty is expected in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory, which is presented in appendix B.

The Holography of F-maximization

We find new supersymmetric backgrounds of ${\cal N} = 8$ gauged supergravity in four Euclidean dimensions that are dual to deformations of ABJM theory on $S^3$. The deformations encode the most general choice of $U(1)_R$ symmetry used to define the theory on $S^3$. We work within an ${\cal N} = 2$ truncation of the ${\cal N} = 8$ supergravity theory obtained via a group theory argument. We find perfect agreement between the $S^3$ free energy computed from our supergravity backgrounds and the previous field theory computations of the same quantity based on supersymmetric localization and matrix model techniques.

Holography for ${\cal N}=2^*$ on $S^4$

We find the gravity dual of $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ super-Yang-Mills theory on $S^4$ and use holography to calculate the universal contribution to the corresponding $S^4$ free energy at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling. Our result matches the expression previously computed using supersymmetric localization in the field theory. This match represents a non-trivial precision test of holography in a non-conformal, Euclidean signature setting.
