Electron spin relaxation in GaAs quantum dot systems - The role of the hyperfine interaction

We present numerical results for electron spin relaxation rates for single and laterally coupled double GaAs quantum dots in a perpendicular magnetic field. As source of spin relaxation we consider hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spins in the GaAs substrate. Due to the differences in the energy scales of the nuclear and electronic Zeeman energies, the phonon bath system has to be taken into account for energy dissipation. The corresponding transition rates of second order show strong dependencies on correlations between the electrons and the electronic energy differences, and hence on the magnetic field. For a highly asymmetric double dot we have found a relatively low second order electron spin relaxation rate for a wide range of magnetic fields.

Harmonic oscillator model for current- and field-driven magnetic vortices

In experiments the distinction between spin-torque and Oersted-field driven magnetization dynamics is still an open problem. Here, the gyroscopic motion of current- and field-driven magnetic vortices in small thin-film elements is investigated by analytical calculations and by numerical simulations. It is found that for small harmonic excitations the vortex core performs an elliptical rotation around its equilibrium position. The global phase of the rotation and the ratio between the semi-axes are determined by the frequency and the amplitude of the Oersted field and the spin torque.

Response of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states to magnetic and non-magnetic impurities

Using exact diagonalization we examine the response of several most prominent fractional quantum Hall states to a single local impurity. The 2/3 singlet state is found to be more inert than the polarized one in spite of its smaller incompressibility gap. Based on its spin-spin correlation functions we interpret it as a liquid of electron pairs with opposite spin. A comparison of different types of impurities, non-magnetic and magnetic, is presented.

Evolution from a Bose-Einstein condensate to a Tonks-Girardeau gas: An exact diagonalization study

We study ground state properties of spinless, quasi one-dimensional bosons which are confined in a harmonic trap and interact via repulsive delta-potentials. We use the exact diagonalization method to analyze the pair correlation function, as well as the density, the momentum distribution, different contributions to the energy and the population of single-particle orbitals in the whole interaction regime. In particular, we are able to trace the fascinating transition from bosonic to fermi-like behavior in characteristic features of the momentum distribution which is accessible to experiments. Our calculations yield quantitative measures for the interaction strength limiting the mean-field regime on one side and the Tonks-Girardeau regime on the other side of an intermediate regime.

Current-Driven Domain-Wall Dynamics in Curved Ferromagnetic Nanowires

The current-induced motion of a domain wall in a semicircle nanowire with applied Zeeman field is investigated. Starting from a micromagnetic model we derive an analytical solution which characterizes the domain-wall motion as a harmonic oscillation. This solution relates the micromagnetic material parameters with the dynamical characteristics of a harmonic oscillator, i.e., domain-wall mass, resonance frequency, damping constant, and force acting on the wall. For wires with strong curvature the dipole moment of the wall as well as its geometry influence the eigenmodes of the oscillator. Based on these results we suggest experiments for the determination of material parameters which otherwise are difficult to access. Numerical calculations confirm our analytical solution and show its limitations.

Probing level renormalization by sequential transport through double quantum dots

We study electron transport through double quantum dots in series. The tunnel coupling of the discrete dot levels to external leads causes a shift of their energy. This energy renormalization affects the transport characteristics even in the limit of weak dot-lead coupling, when sequential transport dominates. We propose an experimental setup which reveals the renormalization effects in either the current-voltage characteristics or in the stability diagram.

Isospin Blockade in Transport through Vertical Double Quantum Dots

We study the spectrum and the transport properties of two identical, vertically coupled quantum dots in a perpendicular magnetic field. We find correlation-induced energy crossings in a magnetic field sweep between states differing only in the vertical degree of freedom. Considering the influence of a slight asymmetry between the dots caused by the applied source-drain voltage in vertical transport experiments these crossings convert to anticrossings accompanied by the build-up of charge polarization which is tunable by the perpendicular magnetic field. The polarization strongly affects the vertical transport through the double quantum dot and is manifest in an isospin blockade and the appearance of negative differential conductances in the magnetic field range where the charge localization occurs.

Tunneling of quasiholes in the fractional quantum Hall regime

The elementary low energy excitations in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime are known to be fractionally charged quasiparticles and quasiholes. This work focusses on quasiholes in a finite system of a few electrons treated by exact numerical diagonalization. Recent experimental [Chung et al., PRB 67, 201104 (2003)] and theoretical [Kane, Fisher, PRB 67, 045307 (2003)] work on quantum point contacts in the FQH regime showed strong evidence for single quasiparticle tunneling to be forbidden at low temperature. We want to gain insight into such constricted FQH systems by a numerical approach. Initially the basics of numerically treating a system in rectangular geometry and procedures to insert a quasihole excitation are presented. The excitations' stability and fractional charge is confirmed for different interactions. The question of quasihole tunneling is approached in two different systems: 1. A system posessing bound, localized states of a quasihole shows evidence for tunnel coupling between these states to exist. 2. Different potential forms to model a quantum point contact are investigated and the injection of a single quasihole near the constriction is surveyed in the system's time evolution.

Charge-localization and isospin-blockade in vertical double quantum dots

Charge localization seems unlikely to occur in two vertically coupled symmetric quantum dots even if a small bias voltage breaks the exact isospin-symmetry of the system. However for a three-electron double quantum dot we find a strong localization of charges at certain vertically applied magnetic fields. The charge localization is directly connected to new ground state transitions between eigenstates differing only in parity. The transitions are driven by magnetic field dependent Coulomb correlations between the electrons and give rise to strong isospin blockade signatures in transport through the double dot system.

Mapping of few-electron wave-functions in semiconductor nanocrystals - evidence of exchange interaction

The influence of the tip-substrate bias induced electric field in a scanning-tunneling-spectroscopy experiment on charged InAs nanocrystals is studied. Calculating the ground and first excited many-particle state for five electrons occupying the quantum dot reveals a Stark-induced reordering of states by increasing the electric field strength. It is shown that this reordering of states is accompanied by a symmetry change of the local density of states (LDOS), which in principal is observable in a wave-function mapping experiment. Since in the usually performed experiments the electric field can not be directly controlled, we investigate the crystal size dependence of the 5-electron LDOS symmetry. It is found that the symmetry changes from spherical to torus-like by increasing the nanocrystal radius.

Stark effect in colloidal indium arsenide nanocrystal quantum dots: consequences for wave function mapping experiments

The influence of the tip-substrate bias induced electrical field in a scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiment on colloidal InAs nanocrystals has been studied. Calculating the Stark induced splitting of the degenerate 1P_e state perturbatively within a particle-in-a-sphere model, revealed a possible explanation of recently published experimental wave function mapping data by Millo et al. (Ref. 1).

Electron interactions, classical integrability, and level statistics in quantum dots

The role of electronic interactions in the level structure of semiconductor quantum dots is analyzed in terms of the correspondence to the integrability of a classical system that models these structures. We find that an otherwise simple system is made strongly non-integrable in the classical regime by the introduction of particle interactions. In particular we present a two-particle classical system contained in a $d$-dimensional billiard with hard walls. Similarly, a corresponding two-dimensional quantum dot problem with three particles is shown to have interesting spectral properties as function of the interaction strength and applied magnetic fields.

The Quantum Hall Effect of Interacting Electrons in a Periodic Potential

We consider the influence of an external periodic potential on the fractional quantum Hall effect of two-dimensional interacting electron systems. For many electrons on a torus, we find that the splitting of incompressible ground state degeneracies by a weak external potential diminishes as $\exp ( - L/ ξ)$ at large system size $L$. We present numerical results consistent with a scenario in which $ξ$ diverges at continuous phase transitions from fractional to integer quantum Hall states which occur with increasing external potential strength.

Hofstadter-type energy spectra in lateral superlattices defined by periodic magnetic and electrostatic fields

We calculate the energy spectrum of an electron moving in a two-dimensional lattice which is defined by an electric potential and an applied perpendicular magnetic field modulated by a periodic surface magnetization. The spatial direction of this magnetization introduces complex phases into the Fourier coefficients of the magnetic field. We investigate the effect of the relative phases between electric and magnetic modulation on band width and internal structure of the Landau levels.

Selection Rules for Transport Excitation Spectroscopy of Few-Electron Quantum Dots

Tunneling of electrons traversing a few-electron quantum dot is strongly influenced by the Coulomb interaction leading to Coulomb blockade effects and single-electron tunneling. We present calculations which demonstrate that correlations between the electrons cause a strong suppression of most of the energetically allowed tunneling processes involving excited dot states. The excitation of center-of-mass modes, in contrast, is unaffected by the Coulomb interaction. Therefore, channels connected to these modes dominate the excitation spectra in transport measurements.
