Electric-Field Control of Quantum Tunneling Regimes in Focused He-Ion-Beam-Irradiated Oxide Interfaces

Helium focused ion beam irradiation enables the fabrication of tunnel field-effect transistors based on two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) at an oxide interface.High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and strain mapping reveal localized lattice deformation confined to the irradiated regions, which act as nanoscale potential barriers. The barrier profile can be continuously tuned by electrostatic backgating at low temperature without degrading the electronic properties of the 2DES electrodes. Transport measurements demonstrate controlled access to thermionic emission, direct tunneling, and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling within a single device architecture. These results establish He FIB irradiation as a powerful tool for nanoscale functional engineering of complex-oxide interfaces and provide a platform for exploring gate-tunable quantum tunneling phenomena.

Mechanical Long Baseline Differential Gradiometers as Low Frequency Gravitational Wave Detectors

We present a new differential mechanical gradiometer for the detection of low-frequency Gravitational Waves. The frequency range is 0.05 to 1 Hz, a frequency gap not covered either by future space-based detectors such as LISA or by ground-based observatories such as Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer. The proposed detection principle is similar to antennas based on torsion pendulums but solves the problem of physical confinement of these antennas by operating vertically and by having a counterweight at one end of each bar and a mass suspended from a long wire at the other. With this configuration, we enlarge the gravitational force acting on the system \textit{without} changing the moment of inertia of the system, so that we move from a signal $Δθ$ of the order of $Δθ= h$, where h is the amplitude of the gravitational wave, to a signal of the order $Δθ= h\frac{L}{D}$, where D is the length of the arm and L is the length of the wire suspending the test mass. This configuration is a further evolution of the recent development of tiltmeters and balances with double suspended arms and interferometric read-out, where the main working principles are already tested. The expected sensitivity will be discussed with respect to the proposed parameters and the present technology.

Spin Hall and Edelstein effects in a ballistic quantum dot with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We study spin-resolved transport in a ballistic quantum dot with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, focusing on charge-to-spin conversion and spin Hall effect. In the regime where the dot size is comparable to the Fermi wavelength, we identify a clear crossover from weak localization to weak antilocalization as the Rashba coupling increases. This transition is accompanied by gate-tunable spin currents of Edelstein and spin Hall type, whose behavior reflects the underlying electron wavefunction interference. Notably, the Edelstein current shows an inflection point at the critical Rashba strength, signaling the crossover from weak localization to weak antilocalization. In the presence of an in-plane magnetic field we also report a transition in angular periodicity of the magnetoresistance -- from $π$ to $2π$ -- arising from the interplay between spin-orbit interaction and Zeeman coupling. These results establish a direct link between quantum coherence, charge-to-spin conversion, and geometric confinement in mesoscopic systems.

Dirac-like fermions anomalous magneto-transport in a spin-polarized oxide two-dimensional electron system

In two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) the breaking of the inversion, time-reversal and bulk crystal-field symmetries is interlaced with the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) triggering exotic quantum phenomena. Here, we used epitaxial engineering to design and realize a 2DES characterized simultaneously by ferromagnetic order, large Rashba SOC and hexagonal band warping at the (111) interfaces between LaAlO$_{3}$, EuTiO$_{3}$ and SrTiO$_{3}$ insulators. The 2DES displays anomalous quantum corrections to the magneto-conductance driven by the time-reversal-symmetry breaking occurring below the magnetic transition temperature. The results are explained by the emergence of a non-trivial Berry phase and competing weak anti-localization / weak localization back-scattering of Dirac-like fermions, mimicking the phenomenology of gapped topological insulators. These findings open perspectives for the engineering of novel spin-polarized functional 2DES holding promises in spin-orbitronics and topological electronics.

Quantum zero point electromagnetic energy difference between the superconducting and the normal phase in a HTc superconducting metal bulk sample

We provide a novel methodological approach to the estimate of the change of the Quantum Vacuum electromagnetic energy density in a High critical Temperature superconducting metal bulk sample, when it undergoes the transition in temperature, from the superconducting to the normal phase. The various contributions to the Casimir energy in the two phases are highlighted and compared. While the TM polarization of the vacuum mode allows for a macroscopic description of the superconducting transition, the changes in the TE vacuum mode induced by the superconductive correlations are introduced within a microscopic model, which does not explicitly take into account the anisotropic structure of the material.

A multiferroic two-dimensional electron gas

Multiferroics are compounds in which at least two ferroic orders coexist - typically (anti)ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity. While magnetic order can arise in both insulating and conducting compounds, ferroelectricity is in principle not allowed in metals although a few two-dimensional (semi)metals were reported to behave as ferroelectrics. Yet, the combination with magnetic order to realize multiferroic metals remains elusive. Here, by combining x-ray spectroscopy and magnetotransport, we show the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism in an oxide-based two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The data evidence a non-volatile switching of the polar displacements and of the anomalous Hall effect by the polarization direction, demonstrating a magnetoelectric coupling. Our findings provide new opportunities in quantum matter stemming from the interplay between ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a 2DEG.

Suspended InAs nanowire Josephson junctions assembled via dielectrophoresis

We present a novel technique for the realization of suspended Josephson junctions based on InAs semiconductor nanowires. The devices are assembled using a technique of drop-casting guided by dielectrophoresis that allows to finely align the nanostructures on top of the electrodes. The proposed architecture removes the interaction between the nanowire and the substrate which is known to influence disorder and the orientation of the Rashba vector. The relevance of this approach in view of the implementation of Josephson junctions based on High-Temperature Superconductors is discussed.

Fabricating Superconducting Interfaces between Artificially-Grown LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ Thin Films

Realization of a fully metallic two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between artificially-grown LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ thin films has been an exciting challenge. Here we present for the first time the successful realization of a superconducting 2DEG at interfaces between artificially-grown LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ thin films. Our results highlight the importance of two factors-the growth temperature and the SrTiO$_3$ termination. We use local friction force microscopy and transport measurements to determine that in normal growth conditions the absence of a robust metallic state at low temperature in the artificially-grown LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface is due to the nanoscale SrO segregation occurring on the SrTiO$_3$ film surface during the growth and the associated defects in the SrTiO$_3$ film. By adopting an extremely high SrTiO$_3$ growth temperature, we demonstrate a way to realize metallic, down to the lowest temperature, and superconducting 2DEG at interfaces between LaAlO$_3$ layers and artificially-grown SrTiO$_3$ thin films. This study paves the way to the realization of functional LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices and/or artificial LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces on other substrates.

Direct transition from quantum escape to phase diffusion regime in YBaCuO biepitaxial Josephson Junctions

Dissipation encodes interaction of a quantum system with the environment and regulates the activation regimes of a Brownian particle. We have engineered grain boundary biepitaxial YBaCuO junctions to drive a direct transition from quantum activated running state to phase diffusion regime. The cross-over to the quantum regime is tuned by the magnetic field and dissipation is encoded in a fully consistent set of junction parameters. To unravel phase dynamics in moderately damped systems is of general interest for advances in the comprehension of retrapping phenomena and in view of quantum hybrid technology.

Coherent transport in extremely underdoped Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3Oz nanostructures

Proximity-effect and resistance magneto-fluctuations measurements in submicron Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3Oz (NBCO) nano-loops are reported to investigate coherent charge transport in the non-superconducting state. We find an unexpected inhibition of cooper pair transport, and a destruction of the induced superconductivity, by lowering the temperature from 6K to 250mK. This effect is accompanied by a significant change in the conductance-voltage characteristics and in the zero bias conductance response to the magnetic field pointing to the activation of a strong pair breaking mechanism at lower temperature. The data are discussed in the framework of mesoscopic effects specific to superconducting nanostructures, proximity effect and high temperature superconductivity.

Quantum crossover in moderately damped epitaxial NbN/MgO/NbN junctions with low critical current density

High quality epitaxial NbN/MgO/NbN Josephson junctions have been realized with MgO barriers up to a thickness of d=1 nm. The junction properties coherently scale with the size of barrier, and low critical current densities down to 3 A/cm$^2$ have been achieved for larger barriers. In this limit, junctions exhibit macroscopic quantum phenomena for temperatures lower than 90 mK. Measurements and junction parameters support the notion of a possible use of these devices for multiphoton quantum experiments, taking advantage of the fast non equilibrium electron-phonon relaxation times of NbN.

Thermal hopping and retrapping of a Brownian particle in the tilted periodic potential of a NbN/MgO/NbN Josephson junction

We report on the occurrence of multiple hopping and retrapping of a Brownian particle in a tilted washboard potential. The escape dynamic has been studied experimentally by measuring the switching current distributions as a function of temperature in a moderately damped NbN/MgO/NbN Josephson junction. At low temperatures the second moment of the distribution increases in agreement with calculations based on Kramers thermal activation regime. After a turn-over temperature T*, the shape of the distributions starts changing and width decreases with temperature. We analyze the data through fit of the switching probability and Monte Carlo simulations and we find a good agreement with a model based on a multiple retrapping process.

Little-Parks effect in single YBaCuO sub-micron rings

The properties of single submicron high-temperature superconductor (HTS) rings are investigated. The Little-Parks effect is observed and is accompanied by an anomalous behavior of the magnetic dependence of the resistance, which we ascribe to non-uniform vorticity (superfluid angular momentum) within the ring arms. This effect is linked to the peculiar HTS-relationship between the values of the coherence length and the London penetration depth.
