Unified formulation and analysis of mixed and primal discontinuous skeletal methods on polytopal meshes

We propose in this work a unified formulation of mixed and primal discretization methods on polyhedral meshes hinging on globally coupled degrees of freedom that are discontinuous polynomials on the mesh skeleton. To emphasize this feature, these methods are referred to here as discontinuous skeletal. As a starting point, we define two families of discretizations corresponding, respectively, to mixed and primal formulations of discontinuous skeletal methods. Each family is uniquely identified by prescribing three polynomial degrees defining the degrees of freedom and a stabilization bilinear form which has to satisfy two properties of simple verification: stability and polynomial consistency. Several examples of methods available in the recent literature are shown to belong to either one of those families. We then prove new equivalence results that build a bridge between the two families of methods. Precisely, we show that for any mixed method there exists a corresponding equivalent primal method, and the converse is true provided that the gradients are approximated in suitable spaces. A unified convergence analysis is also carried out delivering optimal error estimates in both energy- and $L^2$-norms.

A stabilized finite element method for the two-field and three-field Stokes eigenvalue problems

In this paper, the stabilized finite element approximation of the Stokes eigenvalue problems is considered for both the two-field (displacement-pressure) and the three-field (stress-displacement-pressure) formulations. The method presented is based on a subgrid scale concept, and depends on the approximation of the unresolvable scales of the continuous solution. In general, subgrid scale techniques consist in the addition of a residual based term to the basic Galerkin formulation. The application of a standard residual based stabilization method to a linear eigenvalue problem leads to a quadratic eigenvalue problem in discrete form which is physically inconvenient. As a distinguished feature of the present study, we take the space of the unresolved subscales orthogonal to the finite element space, which promises a remedy to the above mentioned complication. In essence, we put forward that only if the orthogonal projection is used, the residual is simplified and the use of term by term stabilization is allowed. Thus, we do not need to put the whole residual in the formulation, and the linear eigenproblem form is recovered properly. We prove that the method applied is convergent, and present the error estimates for the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions. We report several numerical tests in order to illustrate that the theoretical results are validated.

A nonconforming high-order method for the Biot problem on general meshes

In this work, we introduce a novel algorithm for the Biot problem based on a Hybrid High-Order discretization of the mechanics and a Symmetric Weighted Interior Penalty discretization of the flow. The method has several assets, including, in particular, the support of general polyhedral meshes and arbitrary space approximation order. Our analysis delivers stability and error estimates that hold also when the specific storage coefficient vanishes, and shows that the constants have only a mild dependence on the heterogeneity of the permeability coefficient. Numerical tests demonstrating the performance of the method are provided.

Residual-based a posteriori error estimation for the Maxwell's eigenvalue problem

We present an a posteriori estimator of the error in the L^2-norm for the numerical approximation of the Maxwell's eigenvalue problem by means of Nédélec finite elements. Our analysis is based on a Helmholtz decomposition of the error and on a superconvergence result between the L^2-orthogonal projection of the exact eigenfunction onto the curl of the Nédélec finite element space and the eigenfunction approximation. Reliability of the a posteriori error estimator is proved up to higher order terms and local efficiency of the error indicators is shown by using a standard bubble functions technique. The behavior of the a posteriori error estimator is illustrated on a numerical test.

Optimal convergence of adaptive FEM for eigenvalue clusters in mixed form

It is shown that the h-adaptive mixed finite element method for the discretization of eigenvalue clusters of the Laplace operator produces optimal convergence rates in terms of nonlinear approximation classes. The results are valid for the typical mixed spaces of Raviart-Thomas or Brezzi-Douglas-Marini type with arbitrary fixed polynomial degree in two and three space dimensions.

A posteriori error analysis for nonconforming approximation of multiple eigenvalues

In this paper we study an a posteriori error indicator introduced in E. Dari, R.G. Duran, C. Padra, Appl. Numer. Math., 2012, for the approximation of the Laplace eigenvalue problem with Crouzeix-Raviart non-conforming finite elements. In particular, we show that the estimator is robust also in presence of eigenvalues of multiplicity greater than one. Some numerical examples confirm the theory and illustrate the convergence of an adaptive algorithm when dealing with multiple eigenvalues.

Discrete models for fluid-structure interactions: the Finite Element Immersed Boundary Method

The aim of this paper is to provide a survey of the state of the art in the finite element approach to the Immersed Boundary Method (FE-IBM) which has been investigated by the authors during the last decade. In a unified setting, we present the different formulation proposed in our research and highlight the advantages of the one based on a distributed Lagrange multiplier (DLM-IBM) over the original FE-IBM.

Finite element differential forms on curvilinear cubic meshes and their approximation properties

We study the approximation properties of a wide class of finite element differential forms on curvilinear cubic meshes in n dimensions. Specifically, we consider meshes in which each element is the image of a cubical reference element under a diffeomorphism, and finite element spaces in which the shape functions and degrees of freedom are obtained from the reference element by pullback of differential forms. In the case where the diffeomorphisms from the reference element are all affine, i.e., mesh consists of parallelotopes, it is standard that the rate of convergence in L2 exceeds by one the degree of the largest full polynomial space contained in the reference space of shape functions. When the diffeomorphism is multilinear, the rate of convergence for the same space of reference shape function may degrade severely, the more so when the form degree is larger. The main result of the paper gives a sufficient condition on the reference shape functions to obtain a given rate of convergence.

Discrete compactness for the p-version of discrete differential forms

In this paper we prove the discrete compactness property for a wide class of p-version finite element approximations of non-elliptic variational eigenvalue problems in two and three space dimensions. In a very general framework, we find sufficient conditions for the p-version of a generalized discrete compactness property, which is formulated in the setting of discrete differential forms of any order on a d-dimensional polyhedral domain. One of the main tools for the analysis is a recently introduced smoothed Poincaré lifting operator [M. Costabel and A. McIntosh, On Bogovskii and regularized Poincaré integral operators for de Rham complexes on Lipschitz domains, Math. Z., (2010)]. For forms of order 1 our analysis shows that several widely used families of edge finite elements satisfy the discrete compactness property in p-version and hence provide convergent solutions to the Maxwell eigenvalue problem. In particular, Nédélec elements on triangles and tetrahedra (first and second kind) and on parallelograms and parallelepipeds (first kind) are covered by our theory.

Approximation by quadrilateral finite elements

We consider the approximation properties of finite element spaces on quadrilateral meshes. The finite element spaces are constructed starting with a given finite dimensional space of functions on a square reference element, which is then transformed to a space of functions on each convex quadrilateral element via a bilinear isomorphism of the square onto the element. It is known that for affine isomorphisms, a necessary and sufficient condition for approximation of order r+1 in L2 and order r in H1 is that the given space of functions on the reference element contain all polynomial functions of total degree at most r. In the case of bilinear isomorphisms, it is known that the same estimates hold if the function space contains all polynomial functions of separate degree r. We show, by means of a counterexample, that this latter condition is also necessary. As applications we demonstrate degradation of the convergence order on quadrilateral meshes as compared to rectangular meshes for serendipity finite elements and for various mixed and nonconforming finite elements.
