A Converse Hawking-Unruh Effect and dS^2/CFT Correspondance

Given a local quantum field theory net A on the de Sitter spacetime dS^d, where geodesic observers are thermalized at Gibbons-Hawking temperature, we look for observers that feel to be in a ground state, i.e. particle evolutions with positive generator, providing a sort of converse to the Hawking-Unruh effect. Such positive energy evolutions always exist as noncommutative flows, but have only a partial geometric meaning, yet they map localized observables into localized observables. We characterize the local conformal nets on dS^d. Only in this case our positive energy evolutions have a complete geometrical meaning. We show that each net has a unique maximal expected conformal subnet, where our evolutions are thus geometrical. In the two-dimensional case, we construct a holographic one-to-one correspondence between local nets A on dS^2 and local conformal non-isotonic families (pseudonets) B on S^1. The pseudonet B gives rise to two local conformal nets B(+/-) on S^1, that correspond to the H(+/-)-horizon components of A, and to the chiral components of the maximal conformal subnet of A. In particular, A is holographically reconstructed by a single horizon component, namely the pseudonet is a net, iff the translations on H(+/-) have positive energy and the translations on H(-/+) are trivial. This is the case iff the one-parameter unitary group implementing rotations on dS^2 has positive/negative generator.

Dimensions and singular traces for spectral triples, with applications to fractals

Given a spectral triple (A,D,H), the functionals on A of the form a -> tau_omega(a|D|^(-t)) are studied, where tau_omega is a singular trace, and omega is a generalised limit. When tau_omega is the Dixmier trace, the unique exponent d giving rise possibly to a non-trivial functional is called Hausdorff dimension, and the corresponding functional the (d-dimensional) Hausdorff functional. It is shown that the Hausdorff dimension d coincides with the abscissa of convergence of the zeta function of |D|^(-1), and that the set of t's for which there exists a singular trace tau_omega giving rise to a non-trivial functional is an interval containing d. Moreover, the endpoints of such traceability interval have a dimensional interpretation. The corresponding functionals are called Hausdorff-Besicovitch functionals. These definitions are tested on fractals in R, by computing the mentioned quantities and showing in many cases their correspondence with classical objects. In particular, for self-similar fractals the traceability interval consists only of the Hausdorff dimension, and the corresponding Hausdorff-Besicovitch functional gives rise to the Hausdorff measure. More generally, for any limit fractal, the described functionals do not depend on the generalized limit omega.

Modular localization and Wigner particles

We propose a framework for the free field construction of algebras of local observables which uses as an input the Bisognano-Wichmann relations and a representation of the Poincare' group on the one-particle Hilbert space. The abstract real Hilbert subspace version of the Tomita-Takesaki theory enables us to bypass some limitations of the Wigner formalism by introducing an intrinsic spacetime localization. Our approach works also for continuous spin representations to which we associate a net of von Neumann algebras on spacelike cones with the Reeh-Schlieder property. The positivity of the energy in the representation turns out to be equivalent to the isotony of the net, in the spirit of Borchers theorem. Our procedure extends to other spacetimes homogeneous under a group of geometric transformations as in the case of conformal symmetries and de Sitter spacetime.

On the domain of singular traces

The question whether an operator belongs to the domain of some singular trace is addressed, together with the dual question whether an operator does not belong to the domain of some singular trace. We show that the answers are positive in general, namely for any (compact, infinite rank) positive operator A we exhibit two singular traces, the first being zero and the second being infinite on A. However, if we assume that the singular traces are generated by a "regular" operator, the answers change, namely such traces always vanish on trace-class, non singularly traceable operators and are always infinite on non trace-class, non singularly traceable operators. These results are achieved on a general semifinite factor, and make use of a new characterization of singular traceability (cf. math.OA/0202108).

An asymptotic dimension for metric spaces, and the 0-th Novikov-Shubin invariant

A nonnegative number d_infinity, called asymptotic dimension, is associated with any metric space. Such number detects the asymptotic properties of the space (being zero on bounded metric spaces), fulfills the properties of a dimension, and is invariant under rough isometries. It is then shown that for a class of open manifolds with bounded geometry the asymptotic dimension coincides with the 0-th Novikov-Shubin number alpha_0 defined previously (math.OA/9802015, cf. also math.DG/0110294). Thus the dimensional interpretation of alpha_0 given in the mentioned paper in the framework of noncommutative geometry is established on metrics grounds. Since the asymptotic dimension of a covering manifold coincides with the polynomial growth of its covering group, the stated equality generalises to open manifolds a result by Varopoulos.

A semicontinuous trace for almost local operators on an open manifold

A semicontinuous semifinite trace is constructed on the C*-algebra generated by the finite propagation operators acting on the L^2-sections of a hermitian vector bundle on an amenable open manifold of bounded geometry. This trace is the semicontinuous regularization of a functional already considered by J. Roe. As an application, we show that, by means of this semicontinuous trace, Novikov-Shubin numbers for amenable manifolds can be defined (cf. math.OA/9802015 for an alternate definition).

Noncommutative Riemann integration and and Novikov-Shubin invariants for open manifolds

Given a C*-algebra A with a semicontinuous semifinite trace tau acting on the Hilbert space H, we define the family R of bounded Riemann measurable elements w.r.t. tau as a suitable closure, a la Dedekind, of A, in analogy with one of the classical characterizations of Riemann measurable functions, and show that R is a C*-algebra, and tau extends to a semicontinuous semifinite trace on R. Then, unbounded Riemann measurable operators are defined as the closed operators on H which are affiliated to A'' and can be approximated in measure by operators in R, in analogy with unbounded Riemann integration. Unbounded Riemann measurable operators form a tau-a.e. bimodule on R, denoted by R^, and such bimodule contains the functional calculi of selfadjoint elements of R under unbounded Riemann measurable functions. Besides, tau extends to a bimodule trace on R^. Type II_1 singular traces for C*-algebras can be defined on the bimodule of unbounded Riemann-measurable operators. Noncommutative Riemann integration, and singular traces for C*-algebras, are then used to define Novikov-Shubin numbers for amenable open manifolds, show their invariance under quasi-isometries, and prove that they are (noncommutative) asymptotic dimensions.

Fractals in Noncommutative Geometry

To any spectral triple (A,D,H) a dimension d is associated, in analogy with the Hausdorff dimension for metric spaces. Indeed d is the unique number, if any, such that |D|^-d has non trivial logarithmic Dixmier trace. Moreover, when d is finite non-zero, there always exists a singular trace which is finite nonzero on |D|^-d, giving rise to a noncommutative integration on A. Such results are applied to fractals in R, using Connes' spectral triple, and to limit fractals in R^n, a class which generalises self-similar fractals, using a new spectral triple. The noncommutative dimension or measure can be computed in some cases. They are shown to coincide with the (classical) Hausdorff dimension and measure in the case of self-similar fractals.

Representations of Direct Product of Matrix Algebras

Suppose B is the unital algebra consisting of the algebraic product of full matrix algebras over an index set X. A bijection is set up between the equivalence classes of irreducible representations of B as operators on a Banach space and the sigma-complete ultrafilters on X, Theorem 1. Therefore, if X has less than measurable cardinality (e.g. accessible), the equivalence classes of the irreducible representations of B are labeled by points of X, and all representations of B are described, Theorem 3.

Natural Energy Bounds in Quantum Thermodynamics

Given a stationary state for a noncommutative flow, we study a boundedness condition, depending on a positive parameter beta, which is weaker than the KMS equilibrium condition at inverse temperature beta. This condition is equivalent to a holomorphic property closely related to the one recently considered by Ruelle and D'Antoni-Zsido and shared by a natural class of non-equilibrium steady states. Our holomorphic property is stronger than the Ruelle's one and thus selects a restricted class of non-equilibrium steady states. We also introduce the complete boundedness condition and show this notion to be equivalent to the Pusz-Woronowicz complete passivity property, hence to the KMS condition. In Quantum Field Theory, the beta-boundedness condition can be interpreted as the property that localized state vectors have energy density levels increasing beta-subexponentially, a property which is similar in the form and weaker in the spirit than the modular compactness-nuclearity condition. In particular, for a Poincare' covariant net of C*-algebras on the Minkowski spacetime, the beta-boundedness property, for beta greater equal than 2 pi, for the boosts is shown to be equivalent to the Bisognano-Wichmann property. The Hawking temperature is thus minimal for a thermodynamical system in the background of a Rindler black hole within the class of beta-holomorphic states. More generally, concerning the Killing evolution associated with a class of stationary quantum black holes, we characterize KMS thermal equilibrium states at Hawking temperature in terms of the boundedness property and the existence of a translation symmetry on the horizon.

Inclusions of second quantization algebras

In this note we study inclusions of second quantization algebras, namely inclusions of von Neumann algebras on the Fock space of a separable complex Hilbert space H, generated by the Weyl unitaries with test functions in closed, real linear subspaces of H. We show that the class of irreducible inclusions of standard second quantization algebras is non empty, and that they are depth two inclusions, namely the third relative commutant of the Jones' tower is a factor. When the smaller vector space has codimension n into the bigger, we prove that the corresponding inclusion of second quantization algebras is given by a cross product with R^n. This shows in particular that the inlcusions studied in hep-th/9703129, namely the inclusion of the observable algebra corresponding to a bounded interval for the (n+p)-th derivative of the current algebra on the real line into the observable algebra for the same interval and the n-th derivative theory is given by a cross product with R^p. On the contrary, when the codimension is infinite, we show that the inclusion may be non regular (cf. M. Enock, R. Nest, J. Funct. Anal. 137 (1996), 466-543), hence do not correspond to a cross product with a locally compact group.

Singular traces, dimensions, and Novikov-Shubin invariants

In Alain Connes noncommutative geometry, the question of the existence of a non-trivial integral can be described in terms of the singular traceability of the compact operator |D|^(-d), D being the Dirac operator, namely of the existence of a finite non-trivial singular trace on the ideal generated by |D|^(-d). A condition on the non triviality of the Dixmier logarithmic trace on the above mentioned ideal has been given by Connes in terms of the cohomological dimension of the Chern character of the phase of D. In this paper we show that, under suitable regularity conditions on the eigenvalue sequence of |D|, the dimension d can be uniquely determined by imposing that |D|^(-d) is singularly traceable, thus providing a geometric measure theoretic definition for d. More precisely, defining d as the inverse of the polynomial order of |D|^(-1), the operator |D|^(-d) always produces a singular trace which gives rise to a non-trivial integration procedure, even when the logarithmic trace fails. In the second part of the paper we discuss large scale counterparts of the geometric measure theoretic dimension for the case of covering manifolds. We prove that in the case of the coverings studied by Atiyah, the inverse of the polynomial order at 0 of Delta_p^(-1/2), defined via the Atiyah trace, coincides with the Novikov-Shubin number alpha_p. As a consequence, Novikov- Shubin numbers can be considered as (asymptotic) dimensions in the sense of geometric measure theory, since the corresponding power of Delta_p^(-1/2) produces a singular trace. Generalizations of the mentioned results on covering manifolds to the case of open manifolds with bounded geometry are studied in math/9809040

Novikov-Shubin invariants and asymptotic dimensions for open manifolds

The Novikov-Shubin numbers are defined for open manifolds with bounded geometry, the Gamma-trace of Atiyah being replaced by a semicontinuous semifinite trace on the C*-algebra of almost local operators. It is proved that they are invariant under quasi-isometries and, making use of the theory of singular traces for C*-algebras developed in math/9802015, they are interpreted as asymptotic dimensions since, in analogy with what happens in Connes' noncommutative geometry, they indicate which power of the Laplacian gives rise to a singular trace. Therefore, as in geometric measure theory, these numbers furnish the order of infinitesimal giving rise to a non trivial measure. The dimensional interpretation is strenghtened in the case of the 0-th Novikov-Shubin invariant, which is shown to coincide, under suitable geometric conditions, with the asymptotic counterpart of the box dimension of a metric space. Since this asymptotic dimension coincides with the polynomial growth of a discrete group, the previous equality generalises a result by Varopoulos for covering manifolds. This paper subsumes dg-ga/9612015. In particular, in the previous version only the 0th Novikov-Shubin number was considered, while here Novikov-Shubin numbers for all p are defined and studied.

Extensions of Conformal Nets and Superselection Structures

Starting with a conformal Quantum Field Theory on the real line, we show that the dual net is still conformal with respect to a new representation of the Moebius group. We infer from this that every conformal net is normal and conormal, namely the local von Neumann algebra associated with an interval coincides with its double relative commutant inside the local von Neumann algebra associated with any larger interval. The net and the dual net give together rise to an infinite dimensional symmetry group, of which we study a class of positive energy irreducible representations. We mention how superselsection sectors extend to the dual net and we illustrate by examples how, in general, this process generates solitonic sectors. We describe the free theories associated with the lowest weight n representations of PSL(2,R), showing that they violate 3-regularity for n>2. When n>1, we obtain examples of non Moebius-covariant sectors of a 3-regular (non 4-regular) net.

An Algebraic Spin and Statistics Theorem

A spin-statistics theorem and a PCT theorem are obtained in the context of the superselection sectors in Quantum Field Theory on a 4-dimensional space-time. Our main assumption is the requirement that the modular groups of the von Neumann algebras of local observables associated with wedge regions act geometrically as pure Lorentz transformations. Such a property, satisfied by the local algebras generated by Wightman fields because of the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem, is regarded as a natural primitive assumption.

A remark on trace properties of K-cycles

In this paper we discuss trace properties of $d^+$-summable $K$-cycles considered by A.Connes in [\rfr(Conn4)]. More precisely we give a proof of a trace theorem on the algebra $\A$ of a $K$--cycle stated in [\rfr(Conn4)], namely we show that a natural functional on $\A$ is a trace functional. Then we discuss whether this functional gives a trace on the whole universal graded differential algebra $\Q(\A)$. On the one hand we prove that the regularity conditions on $K$-cycles considered in [\rfr(Conn4)] imply the trace property on $\Q(\A)$. On the other hand, by constructing an explicit counterexample, we remark that the sole $K$-cycle assumption is not sufficient for such a property to hold.

The Conformal Spin and Statistics Theorem

We prove the equality between the statistics phase and the conformal univalence for a superselection sector with finite index in Conformal Quantum Field Theory on $S^1$. A relevant point is the description of the PCT symmetry and the construction of the global conjugate charge.
