Levels of spacetime emergence in quantum gravity

We explore the issue of spacetime emergence in quantum gravity, by articulating several levels at which this can be intended. These levels correspond to the reconstruction moves that are needed to recover the classical and continuum notion of space and time, which are progressively lost in a progressively deeper sense in the more fundamental quantum gravity description. They can also be understood as successive steps in a process of widening of the perspective, revealing new details and new questions at each step. Each level carries indeed new technical issues and opportunities, and raises new conceptual issues. This deepens the scope of the debate on the nature of spacetime, both philosophically and physically.

Statistical Equilibrium in Quantum Gravity: Gibbs states in Group Field Theory

Gibbs states are known to play a crucial role in the statistical description of a system with a large number of degrees of freedom. They are expected to be vital also in a quantum gravitational system with many underlying fundamental discrete degrees of freedom. However, due to the absence of well-defined concepts of time and energy in background independent settings, formulating statistical equilibrium in such cases is an open issue. This is even more so in a quantum gravity context that is not based on any of the usual spacetime structures, but on non-spatiotemporal degrees of freedom. In this paper, after having clarified general notions of statistical equilibrium, on which two different construction procedures for Gibbs states can be based, we focus on the group field theory formalism for quantum gravity, whose technical features prove advantageous to the task. We use the operator formulation of group field theory to define its statistical mechanical framework, based on which we construct three concrete examples of Gibbs states. The first is a Gibbs state with respect to a geometric volume operator, which is shown to support condensation to a low-spin phase. This state is not based on a pre-defined symmetry of the system and its construction is via Jaynes' entropy maximisation principle. The second are Gibbs states encoding structural equilibrium with respect to internal translations on the GFT base manifold, and defined via the KMS condition. The third are Gibbs states encoding relational equilibrium with respect to a clock Hamiltonian, obtained by deparametrization with respect to coupled scalar matter fields.

Inequivalent coherent state representations in group field theory

In this paper we propose an algebraic formulation of group field theory and consider non-Fock representations based on coherent states. We show that we can construct representations with infinite number of degrees of freedom on compact base manifolds. We also show that these representations break translation symmetry. Since such representations can be regarded as quantum gravitational systems with an infinite number of fundamental pre-geometric building blocks, they may be more suitable for the description of effective geometrical phases of the theory.

The Bronstein hypercube of quantum gravity

We argue for enlarging the traditional view of quantum gravity, based on "quantizing GR", to include explicitly the non-spatiotemporal nature of the fundamental building blocks suggested by several modern quantum gravity approaches (and some semi-classical arguments), and to focus more on the issue of the emergence of continuum spacetime and geometry from their collective dynamics. We also discuss some recent developments in quantum gravity research, aiming at realising these ideas, in the context of group field theory, random tensor models, simplicial quantum gravity, loop quantum gravity, spin foam models.

The separate universe framework in group field theory condensate cosmology

We use the separate universe framework to study cosmological perturbations within the group field theory formalism for quantum gravity, based on multi-condensate quantum states. Working with a group field theory action for gravity minimally coupled to four scalar fields that can act as a set of relational clock and rods, we argue that these multi-condensate states correspond to cosmological space-times with small long-wavelength scalar perturbations. Equations of motion for the cosmological perturbations are derived, which in the classical limit agree with the standard results of general relativity and also include quantum gravity corrections that become important when the space-time curvature approaches the Planck scale.

Functional Renormalization Group analysis of rank 3 tensorial group field theory: The full quartic invariant truncation

In this paper we consider the complete momentum-independent quartic order truncation for the effective average action of a real Abelian rank 3 tensorial group field theory. This complete truncation includes non-melonic as well as double-trace interactions. In the usual functional renormalization group perspective, the inclusion of more operators that belong to the underlying theory space corresponds to an improvement of the truncation of the effective average action. We show that the inclusion of non-melonic and double-trace operators in the truncation brings subtleties. In particular, we discuss the assignment of scaling dimensions to the non-melonic sector and how the inclusion of double-trace operators considerably changes the results for critical exponents when they are not included. We argue that this is not a particular problem of the present model by comparing the results with a pure tensor model. We discuss how these issues should be investigated in future work.

Fisher Metric, Geometric Entanglement and Spin Networks

Starting from recent results on the geometric formulation of quantum mechanics, we propose a new information geometric characterization of entanglement for spin network states in the context of quantum gravity. For the simple case of a single-link fixed graph (Wilson line), we detail the construction of a Riemannian Fisher metric tensor and a symplectic structure on the graph Hilbert space, showing how these encode the whole information about separability and entanglement. In particular, the Fisher metric defines an entanglement monotone which provides a notion of distance among states in the Hilbert space. In the maximally entangled gauge-invariant case, the entanglement monotone is proportional to a power of the area of the surface dual to the link thus supporting a connection between entanglement and the (simplicial) geometric properties of spin network states. We further extend such analysis to the study of non-local correlations between two non-adjacent regions of a generic spin network graph characterized by the bipartite unfolding of an Intertwiner state. Our analysis confirms the interpretation of spin network bonds as a result of entanglement and to regard the same spin network graph as an information graph, whose connectivity encodes, both at the local and non-local level, the quantum correlations among its parts. This gives a further connection between entanglement and geometry.

Black Holes as Quantum Gravity Condensates

We model spherically symmetric black holes within the group field theory formalism for quantum gravity via generalised condensate states, involving sums over arbitrarily refined graphs (dual to 3d triangulations). The construction relies heavily on both the combinatorial tools of random tensor models and the quantum geometric data of loop quantum gravity, both part of the group field theory formalism. Armed with the detailed microscopic structure, we compute the entropy associated with the black hole horizon, which turns out to be equivalently the Boltzmann entropy of its microscopic degrees of freedom and the entanglement entropy between the inside and outside regions. We recover the area law under very general conditions, as well as the Bekenstein-Hawking formula. The result is also shown to be generically independent of any specific value of the Immirzi parameter.

Ryu-Takayanagi Formula for Symmetric Random Tensor Networks

We consider the special case of Random Tensor Networks (RTN) endowed with gauge symmetry constraints on each tensor. We compute the Rènyi entropy for such states and recover the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula in the large bond regime. The result provides first of all an interesting new extension of the existing derivations of the RT formula for RTNs. Moreover, this extension of the RTN formalism brings it in direct relation with (tensorial) group field theories (and spin networks), and thus provides new tools for realizing the tensor network/geometry duality in the context of background independent quantum gravity, and for importing quantum gravity tools in tensor network research.

Spacetime as a quantum many-body system

Quantum gravity has become a fertile interface between gravitational physics and quantum many-body physics, with its double goal of identifying the microscopic constituents of the universe and their fundamental dynamics, and of understanding their collective properties and how spacetime and geometry themselves emerge from them at macroscopic scales. In this brief contribution, we outline the problem of quantum gravity from this emergent spacetime perspective, and discuss some examples in which ideas and methods from quantum many-body systems have found a central role in quantum gravity research.

Renormalizable Group Field Theory beyond melonic diagrams: an example in rank four

We prove the renormalizability of a gauge-invariant, four-dimensional GFT model on SU(2), whose defining interactions correspond to necklace bubbles (found also in the context of new large-N expansions of tensor models), rather than melonic ones, which are not renormalizable in this case. The respective scaling of different interactions in the vicinity of the Gaussian fixed point is determined by the renormalization group itself. This is possible because the appropriate notion of canonical dimension of the GFT coupling constants takes into account the detailed combinatorial structure of the individual interaction terms. This is one more instance of the peculiarity (and greater mathematical richness) of GFTs with respect to ordinary local quantum field theories. We also explore the renormalization group flow of the model at the non-perturbative level, using functional renormalization group methods, and identify a non-trivial fixed point in various truncations. This model is expected to have a similar structure of divergences as the GFT models of 4d quantum gravity, thus paving the way to more detailed investigations on them.

Dynamics of anisotropies close to a cosmological bounce in quantum gravity

We study the dynamics of perturbations representing deviations from perfect isotropy in the context of the emergent cosmology obtained from the group field theory formalism for quantum gravity. Working in the mean field approximation of the group field theory formulation of the Lorentzian EPRL model, we derive the equations of motion for such perturbations to first order. We then study these equations around a specific simple isotropic background, characterised by the fundamental representation of $\mbox{SU(2)}$, and in the regime of the effective cosmological dynamics corresponding to the bouncing region replacing the classical singularity, well approximated by the free GFT dynamics. In this particular example, we identify a region in the parameter space of the model such that perturbations can be large at the bounce but become negligible away from it, i.e. when the background enters the non-linear regime. We also study the departures from perfect isotropy by introducing specific quantities, such as the surface-area-to-volume ratio and the effective volume per quantum, which make them quantitative.

No alternative to proliferation

We reflect on the nature, role and limits of non-empirical theory assessment in fundamental physics, focusing in particular on quantum gravity. We argue for the usefulness and, to some extent, necessity of non-empirical theory assessment, but also examine critically its dangers. We conclude that the principle of proliferation of theories is not only at the very root of theory assessment but all the more necessary when experimental tests are scarce, and also that, in the same situation, it represents the only medicine against the degeneration of scientific research programmes.

Group field theory for quantum gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field

We construct a group field theory model for quantum gravity minimally coupled to relativistic scalar fields, defining as well a corresponding discrete gravity path integral (and, implicitly, a coupled spin foam model) in its Feynman expansion. We also analyze a number of variations of the same model, the corresponding discrete gravity path integrals, its generalization to the coupling of multiple scalar fields and discuss its possible applications to the extraction of effective cosmological dynamics from the full quantum gravity formalism, in the context of group field theory condensate cosmology.

Continuous point symmetries in Group Field Theories

We discuss the notion of symmetries in non-local field theories characterized by integro-differential equations of motion, from a geometric perspective. We then focus on Group Field Theory (GFT) models of quantum gravity and provide a general analysis of their continuous point symmetry transformations, including the generalized conservation laws following from them.

Renormalization of a tensorial field theory on the homogeneous space SU(2)/U(1)

We study the renormalization of a general field theory on the 2-sphere with tensorial interaction and gauge invariance under the diagonal action of SU(2). We derive the power counting for arbitrary dimension d. For the case d=4, we prove perturbative renormalizability to all orders via multi-scale analysis, study both the renormalised and effective perturbation series, and establish the asymptotic freedom of the model. We also outline a general power counting for the homogeneous space SO(D)/SO(D-1), of direct interest for quantum gravity models in general dimensions, and point out the obstructions to the direct generalisation of our results to these cases.

Bouncing cosmologies from quantum gravity condensates

We show how the large-scale cosmological dynamics can be obtained from the hydrodynamics of isotropic group field theory condensate states in the Gross-Pitaevskii approximation. The correct Friedmann equations are recovered in the semi-classical limit for some choices of the parameters in the action for the group field theory, and quantum gravity corrections arise in the high-curvature regime causing a bounce which generically resolves the big-bang and big-crunch singularities.
