Black hole quantum atmosphere for freely falling observers

We analyze Hawking radiation as perceived by a freely-falling observer and try to draw an inference about the region of origin of the Hawking quanta. To do so, first we calculate the energy density from the stress energy tensor, as perceived by a freely-falling observer. Then we compare this with the energy density computed from an effective temperature functional which depends on the state of the observer. The two ways of computing these quantities show a mismatch at the light ring outside the black hole horizon. To better understand this ambiguity, we show that even taking into account the (minor) breakdown of the adiabatic evolution of the temperature functional which has a peak in the same region of the mismatch, is not enough to remove it. We argue that the appearance of this discrepancy can be traced back to the process of particle creation by showing how the Wentzel--Kramers--Brillouin approximation for the field modes breaks down between the light ring at $3M$ and $4M$, with a peak at $r=3.3M$ exactly where the energy density mismatch is maximized. We hence conclude that these facts strongly support a scenario where the Hawking flux does originate from a "quantum atmosphere" located well outside the black hole horizon.

Quantum gravity predictions for black hole interior geometry

In a previous work we derived an effective Hamiltonian constraint for the Schwarzschild geometry starting from the full loop quantum gravity Hamiltonian constraint and computing its expectation value on coherent states sharply peaked around a spherically symmetric geometry. We now use this effective Hamiltonian to study the interior region of a Schwarzschild black hole, where a homogeneous foliation is available. Descending from the full theory, our effective Hamiltonian, though still bearing the well known ambiguities of the quantum Hamiltonian operator, preserves all relevant information about the fundamental discreteness of quantum space. This allows us to have a uniform treatment for all quantum gravity holonomy corrections to spatially homogeneous geometries, unlike the minisuperspace loop quantization models in which the effective Hamiltonian is postulated. We show how, for several geometrically and physically well motivated choices of coherent states, the classical black hole singularity is replaced by a homogeneous expanding Universe. The resultant geometries have no significant deviations from the classical Schwarzschild geometry in the pre-bounce sub-Planckian curvature regime, evidencing the fact that large quantum effects are avoided in these models. In all cases, we find no evidence of a white hole horizon formation. However, various aspects of the post-bounce effective geometry depend on the choice of quantum states.

Quantum evolution of black hole initial data sets: Foundations

We construct a formalism for evolving spherically symmetric black hole initial data sets within a canonical approach to quantum gravity. This problem can be formulated precisely in quantum reduced loop gravity, a framework which has been successfully applied to give a full theory derivation of loop quantum cosmology. We extend this setting by implementing a particular choice of partial gauge which is then used to select a kinematical Hilbert space where the symmetry reduction is imposed through semiclassical states. The main result of this investigation is an effective Hamiltonian that can be used to solve for quantum black hole geometries by evolving classical black hole initial data sets.

Gravitational edge modes: From Kac-Moody charges to Poincaré networks

We revisit the canonical framework for general relativity in its connection-vierbein formulation, recasting the Gauss law, the Bianchi identity and the space diffeomorphism bulk constraints as conservation laws for boundary surface charges, respectively electric, magnetic and momentum charges. Partitioning the space manifold into 3D regions glued together through their interfaces, we focus on a single domain and its punctured 2D boundary. The punctures carry a ladder of Kac-Moody edge modes, whose 0-modes represent the electric and momentum charges while the higher modes describe the stringy vibration modes of the 1D-boundary around each puncture. In particular, this allows to identify missing observables in the discretization scheme used in loop quantum gravity and leads to an enhanced theory upgrading spin networks to tube networks carrying Virasoro representations. In the limit where the tubes are contracted to 1D links and the string modes neglected, we do not just recover loop quantum gravity but obtain a more general structure: Poincaré charge networks, which carry a representation of the 3D diffeomorphism boundary charges on top of the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ fluxes and gauge transformations.

Electromagnetic duality and central charge

We provide a full realization of the electromagnetic duality at the boundary by extending the phase space of Maxwell's theory through the introduction of edge modes and their conjugate momenta. We show how such extension, which follows from a boundary action, is necessary in order to have well defined canonical generators of the boundary magnetic symmetries. In this way, both electric and magnetic soft modes are encoded in a boundary gauge field and its conjugate dual. This implementation of the electromagnetic duality has striking consequences. In particular, we show first how the electric charge quantization follows straightforwardly from the topological properties of the $U(1)$-bundle of the boundary dual potential. Moreover, having a well defined canonical action of the electric and magnetic symmetry generators on the phase space, we can compute their algebra and reveal the presence of a central charge between them. We conclude with possible implications of these results in the quantum theory.

Orthogonal gauge fixing of first order gravity

We consider the first order connection formulation of 4D general relativity in the "orthogonal" gauge. We show how the partial gauge fixing of the phase space canonical coordinates leads to the appearance of second class constraints in the theory. We employ the gauge unfixing procedure in order to successfully complete the Dirac treatment of the system. While equivalent to the inversion of the Dirac matrix, the gauge unfixing allows us to work directly with the reduced phase space and the ordinary Poisson bracket. At the same time, we explicitly derive the new set of residual first class constraints preserving the partial gauge fixing, which are linear combinations of the original constraints, and these turn out to contain nonlinear terms. While providing an explicit example of how to consistently recast general relativity in a given partial gauge, the main motivation of this classical analysis is the application of the Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity program to a Schwarzschild black hole geometry.

Black Holes as Quantum Gravity Condensates

We model spherically symmetric black holes within the group field theory formalism for quantum gravity via generalised condensate states, involving sums over arbitrarily refined graphs (dual to 3d triangulations). The construction relies heavily on both the combinatorial tools of random tensor models and the quantum geometric data of loop quantum gravity, both part of the group field theory formalism. Armed with the detailed microscopic structure, we compute the entropy associated with the black hole horizon, which turns out to be equivalently the Boltzmann entropy of its microscopic degrees of freedom and the entanglement entropy between the inside and outside regions. We recover the area law under very general conditions, as well as the Bekenstein-Hawking formula. The result is also shown to be generically independent of any specific value of the Immirzi parameter.

The black hole quantum atmosphere

Ever since the discovery of black hole evaporation, the region of origin of the radiated quanta has been a topic of debate. Recently it was argued by Giddings that the Hawking quanta originate from a region well outside the black hole horizon by calculating the effective radius of a radiating body via the Stefan--Boltzmann law. In this paper we try to further explore this issue and end up corroborating this claim, using both a heuristic argument and a detailed study of the stress energy tensor. We show that the Hawking quanta originate from what might be called a quantum atmosphere around the black hole with energy density and fluxes of particles peaked at about $4M$, running contrary to the popular belief that these originate from the ultra high energy excitations very close to the horizon. This long distance origin of Hawking radiation could have a profound impact on our understanding of the information and transplanckian problems.

Spacetime thermodynamics in the presence of torsion

It was shown by Jacobson in 1995 that the Einstein equation can be derived as a local constitutive equation for an equilibrium spacetime thermodynamics. With the aim to understand if such thermodynamical description is an intrinsic property of gravitation, many attempts have been done so far to generalise this treatment to a broader class of gravitational theories. Here we consider the case of the Einstein-Cartan theory as a prototype of theories with non-propagating torsion. In doing so, we study the properties of Killing horizons in the presence of torsion, establish the notion of local causal horizon in Riemann-Cartan spacetimes, and derive the generalised Raychaudhuri equation for this kind of geometries. Then, starting with the entropy that can be associated to these local causal horizons, we derive the Einstein-Cartan equation by implementing the Clausius equation. We outline two ways of proceeding with the derivation depending on whether we take torsion as a geometric field or as a matter field. In both cases we need to add internal entropy production terms to the Clausius equation as the shear and twist cannot be taken to be zero a priori for our setup. This fact implies the necessity of a non-equilibrium thermodynamics treatment for the local causal horizon. Furthermore, it implies that a non-zero twist at the horizon will in general contribute to the Hartle-Hawking tidal heating for black holes with possible implications for future observations.

Symmetries of quantum space-time in 3 dimensions

By applying loop quantum gravity techniques to 3D gravity with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$, we show how the local gauge symmetry of the theory, encoded in the constraint algebra, acquires the quantum group structure of $so_q(4)$, with $ q = \exp{(i\hbar \sqrtΛ/2κ)}$. By means of an Inonu-Wigner contraction of the quantum group bi-algebra, keeping $κ$ finite, we obtain the kappa-Poincaré algebra of the flat quantum space-time symmetries.

The loop gravity string

In this work we study canonical gravity in finite regions for which we introduce a generalisation of the Gibbons-Hawking boundary term including the Immirzi parameter. We study the canonical formulation on a spacelike hypersuface with a boundary sphere and show how the presence of this term leads to an unprecedented type of degrees of freedom coming from the restoration of the gauge and diffeomorphism symmetry at the boundary. In the presence of a loop quantum gravity state, these boundary degrees of freedom localize along a set of punctures on the boundary sphere. We demonstrate that these degrees of freedom are effectively described by auxiliary strings with a 3-dimensional internal target space attached to each puncture. We show that the string currents represent the local frame field, that the string angular momenta represent the area flux and that the string stress tensor represents the two dimensional metric on the boundary of the region of interest. Finally, we show that the commutators of these broken diffeomorphisms charges of quantum geometry satisfy at each puncture a Virasoro algebra with central charge $c=3$. This leads to a description of the boundary degrees of freedom in terms of a CFT structure with central charge proportional to the number of loop punctures. The boundary $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry is recovered via the action of the $U(1)^3$ Kac-Moody generators (associated with the string current) in a way that is the exact analog of an infinite dimensional generalization of the Schwinger spin-representation. We finally show that this symmetry is broken by the presence of background curvature.

Horizon entropy from quantum gravity condensates

We construct condensate states encoding the continuum spherically symmetric quantum geometry of an horizon in full quantum gravity, i.e. without any classical symmetry reduction, in the group field theory formalism. Tracing over the bulk degrees of freedom, we show how the resulting reduced density matrix manifestly exhibits an holographic behavior. We derive a complete orthonormal basis of eigenstates for the reduced density matrix of the horizon and use it to compute the horizon entanglement entropy. By imposing consistency with the horizon boundary conditions and semiclassical thermodynamical properties, we recover the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy formula for any value of the Immirzi parameter. Our analysis supports the equivalence between the von Neumann (entanglement) entropy interpretation and the Boltzmann (statistical) one.

Generalized quantum gravity condensates for homogeneous geometries and cosmology

We construct a generalized class of quantum gravity condensate states, that allows the description of continuum homogeneous quantum geometries within the full theory. They are based on similar ideas already applied to extract effective cosmological dynamics from the group field theory formalism, and thus also from loop quantum gravity. However, they represent an improvement over the simplest condensates used in the literature, in that they are defined by an infinite superposition of graph-based states encoding in a precise way the topology of the spatial manifold. The construction is based on the definition of refinement operators on spin network states, written in a second quantized language. The construction lends itself easily to be applied also to the case of spherically symmetric quantum geometries.

Horizon entropy with loop quantum gravity methods

We show that the spherically symmetric isolated horizon can be described in terms of an SU(2) connection and a su(2) valued one form, obeying certain constraints. The horizon symplectic structure is precisely the one of 3d gravity in a first order formulation. We quantize the horizon degrees of freedom in the framework of loop quantum gravity, with methods recently developed for 3d gravity with non-vanishing cosmological constant. Bulk excitations ending on the horizon act very similar to particles in 3d gravity. The Bekenstein-Hawking law is recovered in the limit of imaginary Barbero-Immirzi parameter. Alternative methods of quantization are also discussed.

CFT/Gravity Correspondence on the Isolated Horizon

A quantum isolated horizon can be modeled by an SU(2) Chern-Simons theory on a punctured 2-sphere. We show how a local 2-dimensional conformal symmetry arises at each puncture inducing an infinite set of new observables localized at the horizon which satisfy a Kac-Moody algebra. By means of the isolated horizon boundary conditions, we represent the gravitational fluxes degrees of freedom in terms of the zero modes of the Kac-Moody algebra defined on the boundary of a punctured disk. In this way, our construction encodes a precise notion of CFT/gravity correspondence. The higher modes in the algebra represent new nongeometric charges which can be represented in terms of free matter field degrees of freedom. When computing the CFT partition function of the system, these new states induce an extra degeneracy factor, representing the density of horizon states at a given energy level, which reproduces the Bekenstein's holographic bound for an imaginary Immirzi parameter. This allows us to recover the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula without the large quantum gravity corrections associated with the number of punctures.

Geometric temperature and entropy of quantum isolated horizons

By reintroducing Lorentz invariance in canonical loop quantum gravity, we define a geometrical notion of temperature for quantum isolated horizons. This is done by demanding that the horizon state satisfying the boundary conditions be a Kubo-Martin-Schwinger state. The exact formula for the temperature can be derived by imposing the reality conditions in the form of the linear simplicity constraints for an imaginary Barbero-Immirzi parameter. Thus, our analysis reveals the connection between the analytic continuation to the Ashtekar self-dual variables and the thermality of the horizon. The horizon thermal equilibrium state can then be used to compute both the entanglement and the Boltzmann entropies. We show that the two provide the same finite answer, which allows us to recover the Bekenstein-Hawking formula in the semi-classical limit. In this way, we shed new light on the microscopic origin of black hole entropy by revealing the equivalence between the near-horizon degrees of freedom entanglement proposal and the state-counting interpretation. The connection with the Connes-Rovelli thermal time proposal for a general relativistic statistical mechanics is worked out.

Turaev-Viro amplitudes from 2+1 Loop Quantum Gravity

The Turaev-Viro state sum model provides a covariant spin foam quantization of three-dimensional Riemannian gravity with a positive cosmological constant Λ. We complete the program to canonically quantize the theory in the BF formulation using the formalism of Loop Quantum Gravity. In particular, we show first how quantum group structures arise from the requirement of the constraint algebra to be anomaly free. This allows us to generalize the construction of the physical scalar product, from the Λ = 0 case, in presence of a positive Λ. We prove the equivalence between the covariant and canonical quantizations by recovering the spin foam amplitudes.

Dynamical evaporation of quantum horizons

We describe the black hole evaporation process driven by the dynamical evolution of the quantum gravitational degrees of freedom resident at the horizon, as identified by the loop quantum gravity kinematics. Using a parallel with the Brownian motion, we interpret the first law of quantum dynamical horizon in terms of a fluctuation-dissipation relation. In this way, the horizon evolution is described in terms of relaxation to an equilibrium state balanced by the excitation of Planck scale constituents of the horizon. This discrete quantum hair structure associated to the horizon geometry produces a deviation from thermality in the radiation spectrum. We investigate the final stage of the evaporation process and show how the dynamics leads to the formation of a massive remnant, which can eventually decay. Implications for the information paradox are discussed.
