Connectedness of fibers beyond semitoric systems II: ephemeral singular points

In an earlier paper, we proved the connectedness of the fibers of every $2n$-dimensional integrable system satisfying both: the action extends the action of an $(n-1)$-dimensional torus which has a proper moment map, and every tall singular point is non-degenerate and no such point has a hyperbolic block and connected $T$-stabilizer. Unfortunately, these criteria are fairly restrictive. Our main goal in this paper is to find a larger class of integrable systems that has connected fibers by weakening the non-degeneracy assumption above. To achieve this, we introduce ``ephemeral" degenerate singular points, examples of which have appeared in the literature in the context of both $p \! : \! -q$ resonances and special Lagrangian fibrations. Finally, we construct a family of examples that shows that our main theorem meaningfully extends previous results.

Connectedness of fibers beyond semitoric systems I: the non-degenerate case

In this paper we study the connectedness of the fibers of integrable systems that extend complexity one $T$-spaces with proper moment maps, assuming that every tall singular point is non-degenerate. Our main result states that if there are no tall singular points with a hyperbolic block and connected $T$-stabilizer, then each fiber is connected. Moreover, we prove that the above condition is necessary if either some reduced space is simply connected or the moment map for the integrable system is generic in a natural sense.

Classification of Hamiltonian $S^1$-actions on compact symplectic orbifolds with isolated cyclic singular points in dimension four

In this paper, we classify Hamiltonian $S^1$-actions on compact, four dimensional symplectic orbifolds that have isolated singular points with cyclic orbifold structure groups, thus extending the classification due to Karshon to the orbifold setting. To such a space, we associated a combinatorial invariant, a labeled multigraph, that determines the isomorphism type of the space. Moreover, we show that any such space can be obtained by applying finitely many equivariant weighted blow-ups to a minimal space, i.e., one on which no equivariant weighted blow-down can be applied.

From Lagrangian Products to Toric Domains via the Toda Lattice

In this paper we use the periodic Toda lattice to show that certain Lagrangian product configurations in the classical phase space are symplectically equivalent to toric domains. In particular, we prove that the Lagrangian product of a certain simplex and the Voronoi cell of the root lattice $A_n$ is symplectically equivalent to a Euclidean ball. As a consequence, we deduce that the Lagrangian product of an equilateral triangle and a regular hexagon is symplectomorphic to a Euclidean ball in dimension 4.

Compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-spaces

In this paper we study compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-spaces. We use the classification of Karshon and Tolman, and the monotone condition, to prove that any two such spaces are isomorphic if and only if they have equal Duistermaat-Heckman measures. Moreover, we show that the moment polytope is Delzant and reflexive, and provide a complete description of the possible Duistermaat-Heckman measures. Whence we obtain a finiteness result that is analogous to that for compact monotone symplectic toric manifolds. Furthermore, we show that any such $T$-action can be extended to a toric $(T \times S^1)$-action. Motivated by a conjecture of Fine and Panov, we prove that any compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-space is equivariantly symplectomorphic to a Fano manifold endowed with a suitable symplectic form and a complexity one $T$-action.

Multiplicative Gray stability

In this paper we prove Gray stability for compact contact groupoids and we use it to prove stability results for deformations of the induced Jacobi bundles.

On topological properties of positive complexity one spaces

Motivated by work of Fine and Panov, and of Lindsay and Panov, we prove that every closed symplectic complexity one space that is positive (e.g. positive monotone) enjoys topological properties that Fano varieties with a complexity one holomorphic torus action possess. In particular, such spaces are simply connected, have Todd genus equal to one and vanishing odd Betti numbers.

Faithful Semitoric Systems

This paper consists of two parts. The first provides a review of the basic properties of integrable and almost-toric systems, with a particular emphasis on the integral affine structure associated to an integrable system. The second part introduces faithful semitoric systems, a generalization of semitoric systems (introduced by Vu Ngoc and classified by Pelayo and Vu Ngoc) that provides the language to develop surgeries on almost-toric systems in dimension 4. We prove that faithful semitoric systems are natural building blocks of almost-toric systems. Moreover, we show that they enjoy many of the properties that their (proper) semitoric counterparts do.

Integrable systems, symmetries and quantization

These notes correspond to a mini-course given at the Poisson 2016 conference in Geneva. Starting from classical integrable systems in the sense of Liouville, we explore the notion of non-degenerate singularity and expose recent research in connection with semi-toric systems. The quantum and semiclassical counterpart will also be presented, in the viewpoint of the inverse question: from the quantum mechanical spectrum, can you recover the classical system?

On the rigidity of lagrangian products

Motivated by work of the first author, this paper studies symplectic embedding problems of lagrangian products that are sufficiently symmetric. In general, lagrangian products arise naturally in the study of billiards. The main result of the paper is the rigidity of a large class of symplectic embedding problems of lagrangian products in any dimension. This is achieved by showing that the lagrangian products under consideration are symplectomorphic to toric domains, and by using the Gromov width and the cube capacity introduced by Gutt and Hutchings to obtain rigidity.

Contact Isotropic Realisations of Jacobi Manifolds via Spencer Operators

Motivated by the importance of symplectic isotropic realisations in the study of Poisson manifolds, this paper investigates the local and global theory of contact isotropic realisations of Jacobi manifolds, which are those of minimal dimension. These arise naturally when considering multiplicity-free actions in contact geometry, as shown in this paper. The main results concern a classification of these realisations up to a suitable notion of isomorphism, as well as establishing a relation between the existence of symplectic and contact isotropic realisations for Poisson manifolds. The main tool is the classical Spencer operator which is related to Jacobi structures via their associated Lie algebroid, which allows to generalise previous results as well as providing more conceptual proofs for existing ones.

From semi-toric systems to Hamiltonian S^1-spaces

This paper studies the local and global aspects of semi-toric integrable systems, introduced by Vu Ngoc, using ideas stemming from the theory of Hamiltonian S^1-spaces developed by Karshon. First, we show how any labeled convex polygon associated to a semi-toric system (as defined by Vu Ngoc) determines Karshon's labeled directed graph which classifies the underlying Hamiltonian S^1-space up to isomorphism. Then we characterize adaptable semi-toric systems, i.e. those whose underlying Hamiltonian S^1-action can be extended to an effective Hamiltonian T^2-action, as those which have at least one associated convex polygon which satisfies the Delzant condition.

Universal Lagrangian Bundles

The obstruction to construct a Lagrangian bundle over a fixed integral affine manifold was constructed by Dazord and Delzant in \cite{daz_delz} and shown to be given by `twisted' cup products in \cite{sepe_lag}. This paper uses the topology of universal Lagrangian bundles, which classify Lagrangian bundles topologically (cf. \cite{sepe_topc}), to reinterpret this obstruction as the vanishing of a differential on the second page of a Leray-Serre spectral sequence. Using this interpretation, it is shown that the obstruction of Dazord and Delzant depends on an important cohomological invariant of the integral affine structure on the base space, called the radiance obstruction, which was introduced by Goldman and Hirsch in \cite{goldman}. Some examples, related to non-degenerate singularities of completely integrable Hamiltonian systems, are discussed.

Twisted isotropic realisations of twisted Poisson structures

Motivated by the recent connection between nonholonomic integrable systems and twisted Poisson manifolds made in \cite{balseiro_garcia_naranjo}, this paper investigates the global theory of integrable Hamiltonian systems on almost symplectic manifolds as an initial step to understand Hamiltonian integrability on twisted Poisson (and Dirac) manifolds. Non-commutative integrable Hamiltonian systems on almost symplectic manifolds were first defined in \cite{fasso_sansonetto}, which proved existence of local generalised action-angle coordinates in the spirit of the Liouville-Arnol'd theorem. In analogy with their symplectic counterpart, these systems can be described globally by twisted isotropic realisations of twisted Poisson manifolds, a special case of symplectic realisations of twisted Dirac structures considered in \cite{bursztyn_crainic_weinstein_zhu}. This paper classifies twisted isotropic realisations up to smooth isomorphism and provides a cohomological obstruction to the construction of these objects, generalising the main results of \cite{daz_delz}.

Almost Lagrangian Obstruction

The aim of this paper is to describe the obstruction for an almost Lagrangian fibration to be Lagrangian, a problem which is central to the classification of Lagrangian fibrations and, more generally, to understanding the obstructions to carry out surgery of integrable systems, an idea introduced by Zung. It is shown that this obstruction (namely, the homomorphism of Dazord and Delzant) is related to the cup product in cohomology with local coefficients on the base space B of the fibration. The map is described explicitly and some examples are calculated, thus providing the first examples of non-trivial Lagrangian obstructions.
