The Missing Link of XR: Empathy-Driven Reality for XR and Beyond

Extended reality (XR) for socialising is becoming increasingly popular. However, unlike conventional social platforms, XR prioritises embodiment and immersion, factors that strongly impact one's physical and mental states. We envision a future for XR where all users, regardless of abilities and backgrounds, can understand one another, participate, and find safe socialisation spaces. An Empathy-Driven Reality (EDR) is a space where understanding each other's emotional, physical, and cognitive states takes centre stage. It has the potential to enhance empathy beyond how we normally perceive it. To explore this concept, we conducted a hybrid-style workshop over two months with 27 industry and academic researchers in XR, emotion, physiology, assistive technology, and social science. This paper reports on the findings and aims to establish a structure and reference for the 1) design guidelines, 2) research challenges, and 3) potential applications for the future of XR as an EDR. We frame EDR as a conceptual design framework rather than a validated system: a structured design space that links requirements to design mechanisms, together with a research agenda for empathy-centred XR.

Confident yet Concerned: Inconsistencies in Computing Students' Attitudes on Cybersecurity

Today's young adults are most immersed in technology, leading in feelings of powerlessness in managing online privacy across many platforms, and particularly susceptible to phishing attacks. This raises questions about their general, wide-ranging attitudes towards and management of cybersecurity. How do young, tech-savvy adults approach cybersecurity? We seek a better understanding of their cybersecurity knowledge, attitudes and experiences, in particular in addressing deceptive online communications. We surveyed a group of `lead users': computing university students (n = 236). By combining thematic analysis of open-ended responses with quantitative data, we provide insights into their experiences and perceptions. While students demonstrate reasonable cybersecurity awareness, their cybersecurity experiences vary, and inconsistencies exist around their practices, perceptions of responsibility, and support structures. Findings also reveal four key thematic tensions: 1) Computing students are knowledgeable yet have persistent incorrect beliefs, 2) They learn more about keeping safe from sources outside the classroom, 3) They have limited assistance and have fallen victim to cybercrime, and 4) Many are confident, yet others are concerned about their own safety and responsibility. Through cluster analysis of attitudes, we identify two groups, with one feeling less prepared, less confident, yet expressing a desire to learn more. Established measures of intentions and objective knowledge were correlated to preparedness. Self-efficacy correlated to confidence and predicted cluster membership.

Exploring Content Concealment in Email

The never-ending barrage of malicious emails, such as spam and phishing, is of constant concern for users, who rely on countermeasures such as email filters to keep the intended recipient safe. Modern email filters, one of our few defence mechanisms against malicious emails, are often circumvented by sophisticated attackers. This study focuses on how attackers exploit HTML and CSS in emails to conceal arbitrary content, allowing for multiple permutations of a malicious email, some of which may evade detection by email filters. This concealed content remains undetected by the recipient, presenting a serious security risk. Our research involved developing and applying an email sampling and analysis procedure to a large-scale dataset of unsolicited emails. We then identify the sub-types of concealment attackers use to conceal content and the HTML and CSS tricks employed.

Eyes on the Phish(er): Towards Understanding Users' Email Processing Pattern and Mental Models in Phishing Detection

Phishing emails typically masquerade themselves as reputable identities to trick people into providing sensitive information and credentials. Despite advancements in cybersecurity, attackers continuously adapt, posing ongoing threats to individuals and organisations. While email users are the last line of defence, they are not always well-prepared to detect phishing emails. This study examines how workload affects susceptibility to phishing, using eye-tracking technology to observe participants' reading patterns and interactions with tailored phishing emails. Incorporating both quantitative and qualitative analysis, we investigate users' attention to two phishing indicators, email sender and hyperlink URLs, and their reasons for assessing the trustworthiness of emails and falling for phishing emails. Our results provide concrete evidence that attention to the email sender can reduce phishing susceptibility. While we found no evidence that attention to the actual URL in the browser influences phishing detection, attention to the text masking links can increase phishing susceptibility. We also highlight how email relevance, familiarity, and visual presentation impact first impressions of email trustworthiness and phishing susceptibility.

What You See is Not What You Get: The Role of Email Presentation in Phishing Susceptibility

Phishing is one of the most prevalent social engineering attacks that targets both organizations and individuals. It is crucial to understand how email presentation impacts users' reactions to phishing attacks. We speculated that the device and email presentation may play a role, and, in particular, that how links are shown might influence susceptibility. Collaborating with the IT Services unit of a large organization doing a phishing training exercise, we conducted a study to explore the effects of the device and the presentation of links. Our findings indicate that mobile device and computer users were equally likely to click on unmasked links, however mobile device users were more likely to click on masked links compared to computer users. These findings suggest that link presentation plays a significant role in users' susceptibility to phishing attacks.

SoK: Human-Centered Phishing Susceptibility

Phishing is recognised as a serious threat to organisations and individuals. While there have been significant technical advances in blocking phishing attacks, people remain the last line of defence after phishing emails reach their email client. Most of the existing literature on this subject has focused on the technical aspects related to phishing. However, the factors that cause humans to be susceptible to phishing attacks are still not well-understood. To fill this gap, we reviewed the available literature and we propose a three-stage Phishing Susceptibility Model (PSM) for explaining how humans are involved in phishing detection and prevention, and we systematically investigate the phishing susceptibility variables studied in the literature and taxonomize them using our model. This model reveals several research gaps that need to be addressed to improve users' detection performance. We also propose a practical impact assessment of the value of studying the phishing susceptibility variables, and quality of evidence criteria. These can serve as guidelines for future research to improve experiment design, result quality, and increase the reliability and generalizability of findings.
