Adaptive Cumulative Mass Calibration with Conformal Prediction

Reliable probability estimates by classifiers are essential in high-risk applications. In practice, however, predicted probabilities are often miscalibrated, and many existing post-hoc calibration methods typically lack guarantees that a specific notion of calibration is achieved after the correction procedure is applied. We introduce a *set-based* perspective on calibration through the notion of *cumulative mass calibration* and the corresponding error measures. We propose a new calibration procedure based on conformal prediction that forms cumulative probabilities with guaranteed marginal coverage. We introduce an __adaptive temperature scaling algorithm__, with the temperature tuned for each input to satisfy the conformal coverage constraint. As we show, this procedure can be efficiently implemented. Across image classification tasks, particularly in settings with many classes, our method improves newly introduced calibration error measures (__CMCE__ and $α$-CMCE) *and* standard metrics (such as ECE, cw-ECE, MCE) over the existing baselines.

EEvA: Fast Expert-Based Algorithms for Buffer Page Replacement

Optimal page replacement is an important problem in efficient buffer management. The range of replacement strategies known in the literature varies from simple but efficient FIFO-based algorithms to more accurate but potentially costly methods tailored to specific data access patterns. The principal issue in adopting a pattern-specific replacement logic in a DB buffer manager is to guarantee non-degradation in general high-load regimes. In this paper, we propose a new family of page replacement algorithms for DB buffer manager which demonstrate a superior performance wrt competitors on custom data access patterns and imply a low computational overhead on TPC-C. We provide theoretical foundations and an extensive experimental study on the proposed algorithms which covers synthetic benchmarks and an implementation in an open-source DB kernel evaluated on TPC-C.

Direct high-order edge-preserving regularization for tomographic image reconstruction

In this paper we present a new two-level iterative algorithm for tomographic image reconstruction. The algorithm uses a regularization technique, which we call edge-preserving Laplacian, that preserves sharp edges between objects while damping spurious oscillations in the areas where the reconstructed image is smooth. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms total variation (TV) regularization and it is competitive with the combined TV-L2 penalty. Obtained reconstructed images show increased signal-to-noise ratio and visually appealing structural features. Computer implementation and parameter control of the proposed technique is straightforward, which increases the feasibility of it across many tomographic applications. In this paper, we applied our method to the under-sampled computed tomography (CT) projection data and also considered a case of reconstruction in emission tomography The MATLAB code is provided to support obtained results.
